I am now running 7.0.2 on all devices, but use my mini the most. 2 iPad 2's (Daughter's and Son's), 1 iPad 3 (Wife's), and one iPad mini (mine) as well as an iPhone 5 (mine) and a 4S (Wife's). Generally the update has been disappointing on the iPads, while being everything I'd hoped for on my iPhone 5 and the 4S.

List of things that are not optimal on iPads:

  • Autorotation causes App folders to grey out momentarily while the orientation adjusts. Looks very "B"
  • Unlocking via a swipe over a notification does not always register and you are loaded into the regular home screen instead of directly into the app the notification came from.
  • Notification Center, App folders, and stock apps like music are exactly the same as the iPhone but blown up. Really bad considering this was a key point of differentiation for them vs. Android in previous versions.
  • Pinch to close and all transition animations lag or stutter momentarily on a regular basis. Not all the time, but about 80% of the time. Parallax effect included. Really irritating and gives the perception of a laggy and slow experience, even if in fact things happen just as quickly.

This is extremely disappointing. I would much rather have waited for iOS 7 on the iPad for when the new generation launches, so they could get it right like they have for the phone version. It would have been a natural delay that everyone would have accepted. Very out of Apple's character to release this in the state it is in for iPad.

Thank you! Waiting for a better update seems like a better option right now.

Strangely enough, the five finger pinch to close an app is smooth for me now! It was jerky/laggy before but no longer.

However, new Facebook app takes an age to open, safari sometimes takes a while to open (not load web pages; just open), and the wallpaper changing lag is still there.

Very out of character indeed! What makes it even worse is that we cannot rollback to ios 6  I think this is indeed very much in Apple's character

Indeed, cached items in general seem to have to reload more often, such as safari tabs as an example. This may be due to the increased RAM resources 7 gives to background app updating, and the bump in RAM the OS itself requires. My Calculator Pro app has to reset now if I just go and check my mail and look up something in Pages or Numbers and then come back to it. Takes an extra second or three every time, whereas on 6.1.3 I could immediately start entering data unless I had been extensively surfing or something in between usages. This is really irritating since I use my mini as a calculator and second workspace a lot alongside my Air for work.

Essentially, 7 is a more bloated OS with all the visual bells and whistles. I have nothing against that in principle, but this in combination with what appears to be very incomplete optimisation on the current iPad line makes for the perception of a buggy and laggy OS, something Apple has gone to great lengths to not be associated with, and indeed has used as a key differentiation between it and its competitors. They need to fix this and get it right sooner rather than later.

This is real disappointing to hear about the iPad. I hope this doesn't cause any problems with a soon to be owner as I'm in the process of eBaying my iPad 3rd Gen.

When will Apple release an iOS that enables iPads to do proper work for professionals, i.e. manage files, have full access to e.g MS Word, MS Excel etc.?
I don't want ever to change to DELL and MS Windows 8. But for the time being, the iPad is not more than a funny toy or an expensive reader for me. I still have to carry my MBP around.

That's exactly what Steve Jobs touted it as. Congrats, you paid attention back in 2010.

I don't like iOS7

I upgraded my mini and can't stand iOS7. From reading these posts I gather that there is no way to return to ver. 6. I use my Ipad all the time for my business so I need a well functioning device. If I buy a new mini will it have iOS6 or will it upgrade automatically to 7? Thanks for the help!

It wil likely have iOS6.x.x on it. You'd have to do the upgrade. You dont have to upgarde but it will probably keep pestering you to.

Why can you not stand it? Is it just not being used to it or are there real functionality problems your experiencing

I am also surprised apple released such an un optimized build for ipad. It's just the iPhone version blown up.... It would be disappointing if the ipad 5 handles ios7 fine. That would mean he iPad 4 less hen a year old would be obsolete

I'm sure iOS7 works okay on the iPad, but I have to agree, it feels a little un-optimized. The home screen is just kind of boring. I know being in the Apps is where it's at, but I think Apple might want to do something more exciting with the iOS on the iPad.

Upgraded to iOS 7 on my iPad mini today. It's terrible! Animations lag (probably it's because iPad mini is an old iPad 2 after all… I wish there were a way do disable animations though). Also, I never use Home button to close apps, prefer to do it with gesture – and when closing an app this way, the animation is horrible, so ugly. Looks perfectly OK when closing with Home button. Weird.
Then, the Control center. Ugh, another horrible thing. If I want to quickly adjust, say, brightness – now I can't do that by double-clicking Home button, I need to get the Control center. In apps, this is horrible, I just keep scrolling up or pressing the Space key on the keyboard until finally I manage to get the Control center on the screen. Double-clicking of Home button only does app switching now.

Overall, extremely raw experience, I don't like it. I like it on the iPhone but not on iPad. Regret upgrading iPad very much, want back to iOS 6:(

On my iPad 4 I have had lockups/resprings as well.

I do not remember any apple release since i first started using iOS to be this buggy

Then again none of the products with ios7 or ios7 itself have actually launched to the masses. So theres a chance apple has a day1 update or they are waiting to collect log data from everyone to fix things,.
No issues smooth as butter(iPad 3, iPad mini)

Yep. Just a personal opinion, of course, but the cosmetic effort invested into iOS7 appears very uninspired and half-hearted.

I do not like iOS 7 on my iPad 4th gen. Very unprofessional looking and kid-oriented with all of the colors. I used my iPad CONSTANTLY on ioS 6, but now I barely want to use it, but can't put my finger on why that is. Why does my Music app have to be pink? Safari seems harder to navigate now. Previously, they've used icons for various methods of navigating an app, now they are using words. :( Still no multi-user accounts for the iPad?

I'm seriously considering a Nexus device. More professional looking and the Google apps are more consistent looking.

I got an iPad mini yesterday and it came with iOS 6. I updated to iOS 7 straight away.

My dad has a mini and after playing around with it for a few weeks I kinda knew what iOS 7 was like on it. I do prefer it over iOS 6 but there are noticeable performance issues and glitches. Hopefully a future update will address these.

Keyboard lag is the most noticeable issue for me. Especially when changing from alpha to numerical. But I do also notice most of the other issues people are mentioning here.

That level of polish and quality we've come to expect from Apple has been sorely lacking of late. It started with the woeful maps release and has carried through to iOS7. I don't know what the cause of the downturn in quality is, but if I had to guess I would say it's a culture where people are afraid to speak their mind for fear of the repercussions. How else would such glaring issues get through quality control?

For me on my 3rd gen iPad (which I see as a slightly slower, more pretty looking iPad 2) I definitely notice some lag in some of the animations, e.g. the return to home screen gesture and the multitasking gesture. Also just swiping around isn't as fluid.
