I'm going to settings then wallpaper but it only changes the lockscreen background.... is there another place?

If I remember from watching the keynote, if you go to the settings for wallpaper it should come up asking to change homescreen, change lockscreen, or change both ...

Seriously, if they don't allow a measly image of that resolution to be applied in the background behind your apps, then they're ripping a lot of people off by taking that feature off them.

It's a picture, it's a couple of MB, if that ... it's hardly going to slow the phone down that much, if at all. Surely?

excuse your right it is settings > wallpaper...but anyways once i clicked set it gave me the option for lockscreen homescreen or both

yeah when I click on a picture it just comes up for me to move it then hit cancel or set and it puts it on the lockscreen. idk maybe it's just a bug. I'm gonna try to restore and reinstall 4.0 tomorrow and see if it works.

I also for some reason can't click the square icon thing in the corner of my pictures to send them or email or anything

So basically, the 3G users on 4.0 beta are getting the exact same interface as present when they go to wallpapers under settings.

You chose a picture and you get two options .... Cancel or Set.

From what I gather, once you've moved the picture to fit accordingly and pressed Set, it should THEN ask you whether to set as home, lock, or both?

Until there's concrete proof that a 3G user has got this working, it sure looks like it's been omitted from the 3G and isn't a bug.

It's a picture forfuxsake. It's not going to tax the system to have a picture behind the apps.

when you hit set it just puts it as the lockscreen background. it doesn't ask anything else.

I've done some digging around Google, and there's reports ranging from people on 3G/3GS getting only the Cancel/Set screen to 3GS owners seeing the Set As Home/Set As Lock/Set As Both screen and then it disappearing and being replaced with Cancel/Set before they can select an option.

Fingers crossed it's a bug. It may sound silly, but this is one feature I was looking forward to having added too my iPhone ... along with the OS X style dock.

I hope this is a bug, it would be lame to disable a simple feature as this for 3G users. I understand that you can't support a model forever, and I don't mind not having multitasking. But I do really like the wallpaper feature. :(

Yeah, it's hardly going to push the system to allow a picture of 480x320 resolution to sit behind your apps.

If the iPhone 3G can run apps like Street Fighter 4 and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, without any issues then surely it can display a still image behind the apps.

Of course it can run a background image.

After all it already is running a background image, it's just black. It's still pixels which have to be lit. Or am I missing something here.

Anyway. It can do it. If you don't think it technically can then you are just as nieve as Apple are in saying it won't do it and they expect us to believe them.

It was a rhetorical question mate.

As I said, the 3G can run games like I mentioned above with no issues ... I play both regularly. Running a background image should not be a problem, but if Apple leave it out on the 3G ... well, there you go. Says it all really.

I don't have 4 beta installed yet, but what is the default wallpaper on the 3G? Is it black or is it that wallpaper shown in the keynote?

It's just black as normal, but with the new glass effect dock ... which make the whole home screen very "washed out" looking. The metal effect dock at least offers some contrast to the black background, but with the glass dock it looks far too black and dark.

My post wasn't really aimed at you or any specific comments. Sorry if it seemed a little hard or aggressive.

I'm just saying that it's silly for people to even start believing hardware is the reason why.

No worries mate, nothing aggressive, etc.

I still think we'll get home screen wallpapers on the 3G, but for some reason they're not in the Beta as yet. Who knows, perhaps the first beta is optimised for 3GS?

I fail to believe that with the lock screen wallpaper function having been in place prior to 4.0, that Apple will lock that feature out from 3G users. If Apple didn't want 3G users to have a new UI then I think the 3D dock would have been left out also. Just my opinion, but I think something as simple as a home screen wallpaper, especially with lock screen wallpapers already in place, is just too simple to leave out.

i really want what you just said to be true. I can live without multitasking, but i want home screen wallpaper, even tough it sounds stupid to crave for such a thing.

Same for me. If we can't have multitasking, at least give us 3G users the wallpapers. :D

I'm on an iPod 2G and can't change my homescreen wallpaper. I searched around and found out that apple has acknowledged the issue and will fix it in a coming update.
