Wooh Hoo

thanks for the answer hopefully this is true may seem silly but this is big for me only reason I jailbroke ;)

I took this on my 3G. Those buttons flash through the screen through the set wallpaper option in settings (as you can see the beta OS is extremely buggy at times). I hope this is a bug in the beta and not Apple actually blocking wallpapers.

Wow. How'd that happen? My 3G 4.0 beta experience has been a little laggy, but nothing that bad.

Ooh, also, does anybody have any idea when the next version of the beta will be out? I really want some homescreen wallpaper.

I'm on a 3GS and it works fine. I tried 2x...first time was fast. Second time took a while but all the sudden it appeared

I FOUND A WAY TO GET MULTITASKING/WALLPAPERS WORKING SMOOTHLY ON A 3G!

Some of you may have already figured this out, but I thought I'd say it anyway. After trying the Beta 1 jailbreak (worked, but MT/HW slowed it WAY down) and Beta 2 (still no MT/HW), I played around with it and found a very usable solution. Put only 4 icons/folders per homescreen. It sounds so simple, but it works nearly perfectly. If you can live with either flipping through many pages of apps or having lots of folders, this should suit you well.

Seriously.

BONUS: This strategy is especially attractive if you have a wallpaper with a centered image, like the Earth wallpaper that's built in.

Edit: BTW, you need to be running jailbroken Beta 1 to do any of this. (redsn0w 0.9.5)

I am running 3g and when I attempt to set the wallpaper I quickly see the options flash by my screen to set as home screen lock screen or both.

Edit: I am on beta 2

Keep in mind this is a beta and I am sure they are well aware of this issue, but it cant hurt.

Home screen wallpaper runs as smooth on my Jailbroken 3G using the 4.0 theme on Winterboard as it does without it.

Having a new reflective dock and a static background image makes no difference in speed/performance.

Multi-tasking however, would be another matter.

My iPhone 3G home screen (above). iPhone 4.0 theme, Winterboard, 3GS battery (installed Cydia apps).

...well obviously.

I meant that I had the Apple-made HS wallpaper and multitasking running well. I chose not to install Cydia or anything else with the jailbreak (as I'm not a fan of jailbreak apps). If it turns out we eventually do get HS wallpaper, I won't jailbreak.

EDIT: btw, in the screenshot above, if you're trying to get the OS 4 look, it's missing the new text drop shadow and many icon revisions (youtube/weather/etc.)... just sayin'.

Here's my setup.

2nd page: 4 folders (various native apps/games/photography/music apps)

3rd page: utilities folder

It's a very useful arrangement for a light user.

Obviously the drop shadows are missing, it's a theme.

And shadows are what is meant to slow downthe 3G when using wallpapers, so either a) Apple will lose the shadows or b) they'll drop the feature entirely.

And I've not noticed any new icons for YouTube and Weather, only Calculator has a noticeable new icon.

However, how is this for ironic? Since using a theme to get hone screen wallpaper, I've found it too busy and reverted back to the standard icons-on-black look.

Stupid

Seriously .. i can understand limitation of multitask on 3g but wallpaper limitation is stupid .. having a color/picture background cant be worst than multitask .. i will definitely jb my 3g after I get iphone 4g.

It isnt JUST a picture. The phone does some realtime rendering of shadows and the other effects to make it look better (and the text easier to read).

Just look at WeegieMac's screenshot of his winterboard 4.0 theme. It doesn't look as nice. The icons dont "pop" and the text is very difficult to read (in cetain situations.. like light backgrounds and where the bubbles are)

It isn't just apples limitation, it seems like it is a hardware limitation. You can Jailbreak 4.0 and ENABLE walpapers and notice the slow down.
