This is an other example of when Apple copies an Android smartphone feature, only then this feature is awesome.
I didn’t even try any 120 Hz phone yet. Even my new 14” MBP is standing aside, I keep using old laptop.

I only have read that at forum and then paid attention to screen details.
Well, eyes can hurt simply due to large daily screen time… But nearby SE with very humble screen shows that less sharp IPS screen makes scrolling kind of softer, just more blurry rather than flickering.

Scrolling a page on a 60hz screen one half the speed as a 120hz screen will refresh the content exactly the same.
If the juddering of a 60hz screen bugs you — scroll slower

I have a 13 and my boss has the 14 Pro which he has let me play around with to test the scrolling and compare. They both scroll differently, but it doesn’t seem any smoother on the 14 Pro…. Just different.

I just turned off promotion to see what it was like, and holy h***… I can’t ever go back to 60hz. It was so terribly janky.

I guess I’m locked into the Pro forever. 🤷‍♂️
Except scrolling which is far worse with Apple's variable refresh rate. Yeah when the refresh rate is 120Hz, everything looks great. But ProMotion isn't 120Hz. ProMotion is variable up to 120Hz, and very often it looks like crap as you visibly see it changing refresh rates on the fly. Scrolling in particular is terrible on ProMotion devices. When you scroll at 60Hz it is amazing how consistent it looks by comparison to ProMotion.

Consistent 60hz crap is still crap.

Haha

(And I don’t ever see this bad scrolling or changing refresh rates. I have a pretty consistent habit of scrolling and don’t have a twitchy thumb. Maybe people with twitchy thumbs don’t benefit from Promotion since the phone can’t figure it out 😵‍💫)

No. The variable refresh rate stutters like crazy when the scroll is slowing down or speeding up. Scroll, let go, and watch it stop. It's terrible.

I don’t see it. Do you see it in this video? :/

Lol, fun fact: you won't see it in this video because when screen recording is active it forces the display to 120 Hz continuously, instead of variable.
Ahhh I see. A feature of screen recording to force it to 120 mhz refresh so that no one can ever prove it exists.

Very cool. Apple is so smart to keep this well hidden.

🙄

...a feature of screen recording because consistent frame rate is essential for video playback.

Video is always recorded at a constant frame rate......so indeed it will set it to fixed instead of variable.

The only use case in which I’ve ever seen a high refresh rate screen provide the most tangible benefit is in gaming.

Of course 120hz is nicer to look at regardless of the use case, but it’s almost wasted on the iPhone. Few games support it or can run at those refresh rates in the more demanding games.

I also wish the Pro would stop taking itself so seriously and offer more “Apple” colors like the regular 14.
Never disagreed more. Even scrolling down the page to read this response is absolutely glorious in 120hz and a pile of blurry mess in 60hz. OLED + 120hz = amazing.

I do agree on gaming, though. 4K 120hz+ gaming is glorious, too.

Well, I guess you like your consistent jittery 60hz refresh rate. I’ll enjoy my ProMotion like a boss.

😎

LOL this thread is funny. While I go back between 120 Hz and 60 Hz, there's no arguing that Promotion is better and if I had the choice, I would use Promotion 100% of the time. That said, I do not see it as such a big deal, as I get quickly adjusted to 60Hz screen after a few minutes of using it. But I do love having 120 Hz on my iPhones and Surface Pro 8

Yeah, you still don't get it. Obviously 120 is better than 60. But ProMotion is not 120 all the time, and it is very bad at switching refresh rates on the fly, especially during scrolling.

Variable refresh is smooth like buttah on my 14pro.

Maybe you have jittery eyes. Lay off the caffeine maybe. 🤣

I go between a works iPhone 11 and my 13 Pro Max and don’t see a huge difference. I remember before all iPhones were OLED we had people raving about how they could never use LCD again and how inferior it was. The truth was it was very subtle and those people were exaggerating in order make their new phones feel superior. Promotion is nice an all, but it’s another subtle feature that once again people on here exaggerate.
