I thought Dark mode should alleviate it already?

In System Preferences, change the desktop background to a solid light color. Then in General preferences, change between light and dark modes. Notice that while the dock changes color, the menu bar remains light even when set to "dark" mode. While in dark mode, click on any menu and notice the light colored menu bar with dark menus. The proper solution should be for Apple to make the menu bar color consistent with the light/dark mode setting like the menus and dock, not telling people they are using the "wrong" desktop background.

Apple didn’t “add” a notch. They removed the bezel on both sides of the notch and made it usable for the menu bar.

This is all about perspectives. Kind of like glass half full vs half empty.
Word salad is fun. However, saying Apple removed the bezel is somewhat incorrect because it implies that they uncovered some actual LCD area that was underneath. As far as I know, the physical screen area in previous MacBooks did not extend past the bezels. A better way to play word salad would be to say that they added an extra split screen on top of the existing screen. Then we could also have fun saying that Apple didn’t eliminate the touch bar, they moved it to the top of the screen. :D

Man, anyone will write an app to capitalize on any kind of impulse these days.

So for $10 you can basically convert your 16" MBP to a 15" MBP. Eventually there'll be another app so you can re-add the notch back in on some apps but not all... and I bet it'll sell for $50.

W.C. Fields wasn't kidding.

Sidenote: I received my MBP M1 Pro yesterday and the notch does not even enter my mind. You know how often I've looked at the menubar and thought, "God, I wish it were lower, like on my 15" MBP?" Not once.

Also, if you think putting the camera below the screen would be a better solution, let me introduce you to what that looks like.

Is there also a way to add a notch area in the menu bar? I have an external screen with a webcam hanging on it that just blocks part of the menu bar. I'd love to prevent any content from being put below it!

read the article this time around

The notch is not a feature, it is a compromise. Very sad what Apple is becoming.
So sad, those pathetic Apple people. Such a promising computer, with a mind-blowing processor and competition-crushing performance. Those charlatans even listened to critiques and gave us back ports, magsafe, and a better keyboard. But that notch ruins the whole thing and is the only sure sign that Apple is becoming a smoking catastrophe. Very sad, indeed. I’m thinking of organizing a boycott. /s

I love responses by people who have no engineering or product design experience. Everyone is a doctor, or a professional engineer. If you want to make the screen workspace bigger and still have a camera, how would you design it, assuming you also know the limitations the the new mini-LED screen, and other deign factors?

You should. Call it "Throw the baby away with bathwater that has a hair in it” club.

Are there no options or apps to drop the entire bar below the notch era? I know that defeats the point of the extra display but it will be less jarring and no menu items could be obstructed.

The 13% of the population that has to complain, were given something by Apple to complain about. It's like having a complaint magnet.

People are so funny about this notch. Would you rather have a small notch as it does now or a giant notch that runs the entire length of the screen as laptops have had since the dawn of the computer? What did we use to call it a "bezel" or something like that?

If you bought a new MacBook Pro and you're having a hard time acclimatizing to the notch at the top of the screen in the middle of the menu bar, there's an app for that.

The inclusion of a display notch on the redesigned MacBook Pros was a surprise to most observers and was one of the few last-minute rumors that surfaced ahead of their unveiling.

Some have since criticized Apple's design choice of adding a notch, but Apple has pushed back against criticism by saying that it's a "smart way" of giving users more room for their content, because it allowed the bezels to be made thinner for added screen real estate.

If that logic doesn't pass your scrutiny, the following apps are available. While they don't outright cancel the notch, they at least make its existence less obvious by forcing a black menu bar, similar to how macOS Monterey adds a black bezel to the top of the display when apps are in fullscreen mode, only by adapting your chosen wallpaper instead, like so.

Forehead (free): Besides letting you switch between your default wallpaper and a black notchless one, Forehead includes options to round the corners of the screen, similar to the rounded top corners of the new MacBook Pros. The ability to simulate a notch on older Macs is coming in an update.

TopNotch (free): Offers the same features as Forehead, and also supports Dynamic Wallpapers, works with multiple displays and spaces, and remains in the background and detects for wallpaper changes.

De-Notch-ifier (€9.95): Offers the same features as TopNotch, just in the form of a dropdown menu in the menu bar. De-Notch-ifier isn't a completely new app, rather it's a pre-configured version of Boring Old Menu Bar that gives you a boring old non-transparent menu bar on macOS Big Sur and later. If you buy one app, you get the other for free.

Own a new MacBook Pro? What do you think of the notch now that you've spent some time with it? Let us know in the comments.

"If that logic doesn't pass your scrutiny"...you mean if you are incapable of logic, right?

Well the passionate engineers at Dell already found a solution for this problem years ago. They also have WindowsHello biometric authentication in their notchless and bezelless screen even.
The only Dell that even has a webcam in its small bezel screen is 720p only and uses a fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. Are you unaware that Windows Hello is not just face recognition? Why do you post these things without double checking your "facts"?

Ahhhh to live times of first world problems spun down to worrying about a fringing notch… We are all doomed.

I don’t care about the notch, but considering all the vitriol aimed at iPhones because of it this ‘controversy’ was easily foreseeable. My personal solution if I was Apple would be to announce a “notch less” version to be available in 4-6 months that costs X amount more and has a big enough top bezel to put the camera. You have to pre order and if not enough people do then the project may be canceled. If enough people buy it then you have a second product with very little engineering required that you can make a little extra money because of someone’s personal preference. If it doesn’t sell then you can tell complainers that when offered the notchless option few people bought one, so Apple isn’t going to offer it again. And just repeat that fact every time someone complains.

The Dell camera you’re referencing is low res garbage and Windows Hello is a convenience feature, not a security feature.

Comparing Windows Hello to Face ID is like comparing a twist tie to a padlock.
