So today I updated my MBP to latest Sierra OS and iTunes updates.

I have my iTunes Library on an external Seagate hard drive. Now when I try to open iTunes, I get the following message:

"iTunes cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure iTunes works with this version of macOS. You may need to install the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and macOS."

    Any ideas anyone?

I am afraid that if I delete / reinstall iTunes, I may lose data that ties to my external drive.

Have you tried holding down the option key while opening iTunes?
I keep my iTunes Library on an external (a big lib for iTunes 10.4.1, and a little one for whatever the latest version is)
Started to the appropriate library this morning, then did the update ->
Started that up holding option key down to choose library, and it worked fine.
Quit, then started good old 10.4.1 with opt key down so as to choose the right library, and it still works fine.

Your new version ( may be choking on an inability to find the right library.

If that doesn't work, try downloading the installer directly from and reinstalling.

    Thanks very much.

After reinstalling itunes from the link you provided, and opening while holding option key, I got my library back.
