I had an accident a few months ago. I'd just got off a long overnight flight and drove my girlfriend home and my mum shopping, on the way back to mine I fell asleep at the wheel when I was less than a mile from home. I woke up just in time to see that I was driving at a right angle into the kerb of a side road. I had no time to stop it, so I concentrated on stopping the car from losing control. Both my right tyres burst in the impact. When I landed I straightened the car up and prepared to slow down. I noticed a frightening amount of cars coming towards me, which is when I realised I was on the wrong side of the road (I'd spent two weeks in North America and was used to the other side). I pulled off the road, changed the wheel and went home.
I should never have been driving, but when we arrived back in the UK I felt a sudden burst of energy. I'd been talking with my mum in the car, which is what was keeping me awake. When she fell asleep I lost that and it wasn't long before I drifted off. She woke up when I hit the kerb and shouted "what's going on?!", my response was "Nothing, I'm on the wrong side of the road"
I was extremely lucky. I was travelling at at least 50mph on a road that is usually very busy in both directions. I must have picked the only quiet ten second period of the whole weekend to have my accident. Since then I've been extremely careful about driving while tired. At the merest hint of tiredness I'll stop for a rest and caffeinated beverage.
