There aren't many Iphone dedicated usb-c to usb-a cables out there.
Found a very positive updated "fixed my carplay finally" Belkin cable on Amazon

326 comments over 14 pages yet nobody ever mentioned OTG.
I may be wrong, but isn't the wrong direction of the data flow in USB-A to USB-C OTG cables and adapters the real issue here (peripheral vs host, sink vs source) instead of MFi?

All USB-A to USB-C adapters, regardless of the arrangement, are potentially a fire hazard.

The reason for this is that USB-C can carry very high current and/or voltage. The risk is true even for cable-based dongle and USB-C power adapters. Even brand names like Anker were recalled in the past for fire hazard. Hyper is another infamous example.

But the adapter form factor is particularly risky due to more compact form factor -- closer proximity to two devices transmitting electricity.

Adding to @nutmac. The standard passive adapter of USB A male to USB C female doesn’t have a pull-up resistor to make USB C connections utilize legacy mode currents. This may make the car head unit disconnect the USB C device for over-current protection.

You need an active USB 2.0 adapter like https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07VCZV3R4?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image to limit the current when adapting to a USB 2.0 port.

Or a USB 2.0 A to USB C cable like https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basic...d=1703121320&sprefix=usb+a+2.0,aps,144&sr=8-4

IIRC, the connector must also support OTG for CarPlay to work, which many don’t.

Updating to 17.2 fixed my CarPlay issues.
That's good to hear.

Unfortunately wired CarPlay doesn't work for my iPhone 15 Pro. This is despite buying a second premium cable that worked for a few weeks, and then only worked for charging and now it doesn't work at all with my phone but does with my Samsung T7 SSD and spare android phone.

It's disappointing and feels like Apple is focusing on wireless CarPlay. This is quiet telling as they don't sell a usb-a to usb-c cable for use in cars. :(

I do not have wireless CarPlay. My wired CarPlay had to be repeatedly plugged and unplugged to get it to work.

i bought an expensive authorized iphone usb-c to usb cable and it works great.

Just want to share my experience to maybe help save others some money. I went through this thread and bought three different USB-A to USB-C cables that people said worked for them: Anker, Amazon Basics, and CableCreations. None of these cables worked for an iPhone 15 plus running iOS 17.2.1 in a Honda Accord EX-L hybrid 2017. CarPlay works fine with my iPhone 14 Pro (lightning cable). Probably will try a Lightning to USB-C adapter next. If that doesn’t work I’m giving up

FYI, I managed to enable data transfer between my iPhone 13 mini and my iMac M1 with some $2 USB-C cables that could not enable any DT in the first place, just by adding a cheap OTG adapter to that bad cable. I was completely astonished. Obviously this setup does not involve an iPhone 15 nor CarPlay, but I think you will see the similarity here.

So, for those who have an iPhone 15 and a USB-C cable that do not enable Apple CarPlay in your car: does data transfer work using that same USB-C cable between your iPhone 15 and your Mac or PC? Please answer that simple question, if it doesn't work either, I think I can give some additional clue with respect to OTG adapters. However if DT works with the computer, then these are two distinct issues.

Zac Hall From Macrumors has a 2016 Civic, he says belkin has cables that work, try one of those

That's very bizarre. I wonder if your car has firmware that could be updated?

Yeah just ordered a wireless adapter for $90 I guess that’s my only option now. Gone thru 5 different high quality cables at this point

Did you try the lightning to usbc adapter?
Sorry forgot to add that- I’ve tried the tiny adapter which didn’t work but I also ordered the Apple official dongle which is in the mail. Will try that a report back.

After doing more research it seems to be an issue specific to 2016-2017 Honda Accords. So the cables I tried may still work for others in different (especially newer) vehicles.

Which is the official Apple dongle you are referring to? I didn't know they made one!

Have you checked the Honda site for owners? Maybe they have a software update available.
