guarantee it is purely a software upgrade that just enables higher power on the port. not a chance they are swapping out hardware for that price but they will charge you a labor rate regardless.
You’d be wrong. If you followed mazda3revolution forum you’d have long since seen the hardware required. Yes, it’s a swap of the USB hub and some other wiring.

Mazda has only been talking about this for a couple of years now. I thought this was supposed to be a free upgrade. I guess it's better late and $ than never.
They said it would only be free for 2018 Mazda 6.

I don't think it's worth $200. I got the free install in my 2018 Mazda6. I was really looking forward to it but after having it enabled for a couple of days I stopped using it. The user interface is clunky and requires using a knob to navigate, which is more distracting than touching buttons on the screen. The audio quality was terrible for some reason, which I attribute to CarPlay getting in the way. Mazda navigation is as good, if not better than the navigation experience of Apple Maps, at least in my experience.

I'm totally all over this. Yes, I have a mount for my Xs max. But not all apps work in landscape. And the screen in my vehicle is larger than the phone. I like having maps on that display. As well as music in an interface better suited for the car. And it's illegal here to use your phone while driving but I can use the stereo so there's that.
I hope I can just find the kit and do it myself. Charging $199 + labor is beyond ridiculous.

Does CarPlay suck for anyone else?
Mine is riddled with problems. When I make calls people hear an echo of themselves back. Depending on when I plug my phone in, it will sometimes connect and others it won't. It will just randomly disconnect. It happens over multiple phones, multiple OS's, and multiple model of phone. Its very frustrating.

Likely your car's hardware/software.

Nope, had to go through the same process on my Mustang. So it is a hardware and software upgrade. The hardware process was quick on my car, but who knows with the Mazda. I got my hub for $60 and did it myself in 15 minutes. They may need to run new wiring to power the hub though, but $200 is a bit much.

For all the people saying they would do it for 200 dollars, it's not actually 200 dollars. That 200 dollar price is the MSRP just for the hardware required. It seems most people are being quoted over 400 dollars to get the install done once you include labor. You can buy the parts yourself online for about 160 dollars if you are willing to do it yourself. It involves a firmware update and replacing the aux box.

This isn't correct. The previous USB ports on the mazda connect system were actually a USB hub, two ports connected via a single USB cable to the head unit. In order for CarPlay to work, the system must support USB host swap, which can't be done through the hub. The 199 price here is for the new hardware alone, not install. The new hardware is a new USB/AUX box and two new cables that run to the headhunt, one for each USB port.

I have a new Ram with the 12.1 touchscreen. I also have a cell phone holder with wireless charging built in the truck. How the heck do they not offer wirelsss CarPlay? It has a wireless charging station for God’s sake. It won’t kill the battery via Bluetooth if I’m wireless charging it.

Wireless charging is easy and cheap. Wireless carplay in car stereos is rather expensive.

Of course. BMW does wireless CarPlay. Supposedly people said they didn’t allow it because the phone battery would die pretty fast without connecting the phone via usb. Well, that was before there was wireless charging in the vehicle. Now they have it. BMW has been having it which I’m assuming is why they allowed wireless CarPlay.

No, it's just a bluetooth connection. Wireless charging isn't a requirement. It's just expensive. So no wonder BMW has it. I was looking for a new stereo for my truck with carplay which can be had for cheap. But for wireless carplay? That was $800+. Prices will come down in time as they do and more vehicles will have it.

I think your confusing what I said in my last 2 posts. I know it’s just a Bluetooth connection. I know wireless charging isn’t a requirement. But I was stating that people said it was the reason wireless CarPlay is not available on other vehicles besides BMW. If you have wireless CarPlay with no wireless charging pad, your battery would die fast. If you have wireless CarPlay with a wireless charging pad, your battery will not die during use of wireless CarPlay besucase it’s charging. My truck has a wireless charging pad. So if wireless CarPlay was available, my phone would not die because it’s charging wirelessly the whole time I’m using wireless CarPlay. Yet I don’t have wireless carplay available. I have to connect via usb to enable it.

Your move, Toyota. Please do something about your horrible Entune suite.
I've had Entune since January 2016 and honestly don't even know what it is or what it does. I don't think I've ever used or benefited from it. What am I doing wrong? I have the iOS app installed. I've let it update Entune a few times. That's about it.

Also, if I'm listening to audio in my vehicle over Bluetooth and try to use dictation on my phone, I crash the vehicle's Entune and the whole thing reboots. This happens consistently.

Wireless CarPlay is not just a bluetooth connection. Bluetooth is only used for discovery and handshaking. Wireless CarPlay requires Wifi connection between phone and car. Apple recommends 802.11ac for wireless CarPlay, which is why its so rare, most car wifi systems are 802.11n.

I understand. No, it should not die any faster. Nor have I heard anyone say that. No different than just playing your music through bluetooth.
If it were me, just jumping in and zipping around town I wouldn't sweat it. It would be nice to have wireless but no big deal. You wouldn't lose a ton of battery. For long trips i'd have it plugged in anyways.

Even so, it shouldn't kill the battery any faster than playing music via wifi at home.

If Toyota offered this, I'd already be at the deal giving them my money. It sucks for 2018 buyers, but I feel like $199 is a fair price given that hardware components are part of the deal. An aftermarket unit could cost anywhere from double to ten times that much

"suggested price of $199 plus the cost of labor"
I wonder how much that labor is going to be ...

I had a 2016 Mazda6 and while the rotary knob wasn't an issue for me, the overall responsiveness of the infotainment system was terrible. You also aren't allowed to use the touchscreen if above 5 mph. Bluetooth is slow to connect and the graphics are low resolution. Compare it to my 2018 Accord and their infotainment is markedly faster and advanced.

$199 doesn't seem too bad for a hardware upgrade and software update. I am curious on how they are updating the software since they blocked USB access with a recent version of the current software since people like me were hacking the infotainment system. The only thing I ever did was disable the touchscreen lockout.

As for CarPlay itself, I don't really use it. If it was wireless, I'd use it a lot more.

Most dealers are quoting people for the part and install $499. Some as low as $400. You can apparently buy what you need online for as low as $160 and do it yourself which should be easy enough.

Such a joke they put in under powered USB ports to begin with. Straight cash grab to install and software upgrade. Could easily do both on my own.

You can totally DIY this with the official Hardware and Software updates.

Any Mazda Dealer Parts desk will sell you the part assuming they have stock.

The firmware update is readily available online.

I'd suggest you start with this forum for further info, and you'll find that if you're willing and able, it's a simple task:
