Terrible is a pretty strong word considering millions of folks get by just fine with Apple Maps. Google Maps is better, no doubt - but Apple Maps is good too.

In my experience, Apple maps is okay but Google really shines when it comes to finding the best routes for me when traffic is heavy here in Southern California. And since that is virtually every day, I usually use Google.

> Google Now might have even guessed I wanted to go there, even before I searched.

So we’re reviewing based on what competitors might do, now, huh? Great.

I wouldn't buy a car without this. The built-in car nav/interface systems and designs are awful. Obviously, it'll take a little time for CarPlay to develop, so I hope it'll just get better.

I'd like to start to see front-end cameras in cars (and then eventually left and right) in addition to the rear-end cameras that are becoming more and more standard. I could see this being helpful for precision parking, lane changing, and monitoring your vehicle remotely from your phone. Also, if every camera recorded the past hour or so, and then you could download that data onto your phone, that would be huge for car accident reports, because you could just replay exactly what happened.

I can also see "Find my car" just like "Find my iPhone" coming soon, if your car gets stolen, or if you just forget where you parked.

iOS 9 has these same predictive features. Using the beta and I get an alert telling me how long it will take to get home whenever I leave work. Or direction and arrival time suggestions when I leave for an event in my calendar.

Yes I have had the same success with iOS 9. I've gotten alerts of upcoming accidents as well as alternate routes to save time while traveling. Much better than iOS 8 and closer to what google maps is doing.

Apple maps are probbaly useful for major US cities. Google maps are useful pretty much everywhere.

Now can many can avoid accidents by getting an alert about "upcoming accidents".. ;)

What a shock, Apple maps is still terrible compared to google maps

The most important thing about a car dashboard is the navigation, and I'm using google maps 100% of the time

Google Maps has on many occasions told me to make u-turns in order to get to a location on the left, when i could have easily turned left at the previous intersection and then turned right to get to my destination. Neither are perfect.

The review concluded that Apple's services are "stuck in the slow lane" compared to Google Maps and Google Now:Nevertheless, Stern described CarPlay as the future of in-car technology and said that, if she were in the market for a car right now, she would add Apple's in-car software to her want list. The full-length review is a worthwhile read and provides a side-by-side comparison of CarPlay's maps, messaging, music, voice control and home screen features with Google's rival in-dash system Android Auto.

I haven't used CarPlay nor Android Auto, but I have to agree that Apple Maps is not even half as good as Google Maps on my iDevices. The only thing it does better is integration with other Apple apps (Contacts, Messages, Mail, Safari etc.).

I use Google Maps daily, it has effectively replaced my in-dash nav. The traffic and alternative routes are superb, and ETA is just about always spot on.
