I really don't see the point of this. I keep cars until the wheels fall off and 11 years ago when I bought my Nissan Titan Apple wasn't even making startphones; Microsoft was dominating. 10 years from today we may see a major change in mobile.

The lack of real-time traffic rerouting is the only thing stopping me from using Apple Maps (although I've heard this is coming in iOS 9).
Apple Maps does real-time re-routing, just not as good as Google maps. There are plenty of reports of people being routed around traffic jams by Apple Maps.

I put a Kenwood DDX9902S with CP and AA in my '09 Pontiac Solstice GXP last month with no troubles. If you've got a double-DIN sized stereo, you can always go aftermarket.

I still run Waze in the background because I continue to get police/hazard notifications, even if I can't actually contribute my own observations.

I thought the current map app did that? While driving to Atlanta from Orlando, I received an alert of traffic ahead on the i75 and an alternate route. I also got the same when traveling back to NYC on the i81.

my ipad mini on the dashboard is just as good for $200 and can get upgraded every year for a modest price...

Pssshaw. My 60" Sony TV is way better than an iPad mini, and I can hide it in the back seat when I have to leave my car in undesirable areas. I do find the suction-cup mounting method is ineffective, though.

On the contrary, Stern found Apple Maps to be inferior to Google Maps at providing routing based on traffic conditions:
The review concluded that Apple's services are "stuck in the slow lane" compared to Google Maps and Google Now

I have to say that I agree with this. I like the integration that Apple Maps provides with your phone and the UI, but sometimes Apple Maps search results and Siri responses are very "dumb". One place you can't really knock Google is in search result accuracy. It seems over the years Google has gotten really good at knowing what you meant, even when you provide very little information.

I think this stems from all of data they have gathered from their search engine. I'm hoping that Apple can somehow catch-up without requiring years of customer usage and data gathering.

Can you not use the Google Maps app in CarPlay?
And you can't use the screen on the phone when it's plugged in? That's kind of a deal breaker.

The whole point of not being able to use the phone is: eliminating distracted driving. The UI is basic... Giving you all the info you need without all the added, unnecessary clutter on most ICE displays.

I like the idea of Car Play, but no Google Maps support is a deal-breaker for me. Another potential deal-breaker would be if Car Play doesn't support the iOS SiriusXM app because I pretty much listen to Howard Stern all the time when I drive (and it has to work with my phone because I download the shows on-demand in order not to lose my place in whatever episode I'm listning to, and have an internet-only subscription, so the car radio having a Sirius receiver doesn't help). I think my best bet is to keep chugging along with my phone mounted to my dashboard and connected via bluetooth.

What's with all the negative headlines today on MR? First, the negative spin about Apple Music rather than praising the very high conversion rate, and now this.

The article also said Siri was better than Android Auto for messaging and voice dictation so the headline could just as easily have been positive.

But I guess negative headlines garner more clicks.

The difference is that Apple makes money by selling you hardware. Google makes money by monetizing your privacy and shoving ads under your nose.

Citation needed...really? Well, I'd be happy to oblige:
"By using any location-based services on your iOS Device, you agree and consent to Apple's and its partners', licensees' and third party developers’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data and queries to provide and improve such products and services."

So it looks like Apple DOES take your information (location info this case) and share it with it's partners (read: advertising customers) to provide better products and services (iAds anyone?). Folks should pay attention to the software license agreements that they gleefully accept when using Apple products. And perhaps reconsider when they bash <insert non-Apple company here> about "monetization of personal info".

What the hell is a baby naming? Really? A party to name a baby? I thought the pre-birth party was called a baby shower, and at the hospital you tell them the name of the baby after birth, and then the post birth party is the baptism or christening (if you're religious) or if not everybody just comes to visit and see it.

I'm on the fence.

Don't like touch screens in cars; dials and tactile buttons are better. But I'm willing to give this a chance. The whole Siri integration puts me off though, because it's so awful.

Glad I don't live in NYC if Apple Maps doesn't know what traffic is doing. Bizarre: in my city, Apple Maps has been far superior, routing me around things that just happened, and finding places my Android friends cannot find using Google.

The best choice of maps seems to be a very local decision. And/or luck! (I.e., does Google ever screw up in NYC? Apple did once for the writer... is that a trend or an anecdote? An anecdote Google users never see? Or see less? Or ASSUME they see less?)

Apple Maps pre iOS 9 don't use traffic data in routing decisions. With iOS 9 traffic is taken into consideration for routing.

I like the travel time to the coffee shop....

standalone apps still look like the winner over any "convience" server based mapping system..

It's the difference between weather u'll get to that party on time, or wind up gate crashing someone else's

My navigation failed me again.

Why not search on "baby naming ceremony" and see what happens? :)

No Google Maps support is actually a selling point for me. Where I live it's not that great. If CarPlay used Google Maps I would consider that a deal breaker. Also, who would want a service trolling through their email?

I can also see "Find my car" just like "Find my iPhone" coming soon, if your car gets stolen, or if you just forget where you parked.

That would be great for rental cars so you don't have to play "Pop the Trunk"
