If this was just a routine coverage update, wouldn't the average at&t rep know about it?
Maybe it has something to do with Google Latitudes?
A user on the Apple forums said they were told by AT&T exec support that the update allows iPhone to support AT&T's upcoming femtocell solution.
Hah, call center CSRs are the last to know anything.
No.
Well I live in the Bay Area in California and for the past couple of days, 3G connectivity has been horrible. It intermittently drops in and out and I cannot access the internet at all sometimes. I was about to create a thread to see if anyone has been experiencing this same issue with at&t and their iphone, but this update gives me hope. Maybe its to fix this issue. I certainly hope so. Anyone else been experiencing complete 3G drop outs lately?

Why not? The Latitude's GPS function works by both GPS and by using cell towers to find your location. Here, educated yourself:

apparently it adds support for the new 3G MicroCell from at&t. I found out about it here

Mmmmmm. I'm not jailbroken, but I'll wait it out for a bit. It's probably an update to restrict use somehow.
