As one or two said already I believe, I got this update for the original iPhone...so it can't be exclusively something for the 3g, can it?

I did the update this morning. When I got to work it seemed like I had better 3G service inside my building. Usually I would have 3 bars of Edge but this morning I had 2 bars of 3G.

Can I say how much I love this community?

I was at work yesterday and I plugged my iPhone into the computer to charge.
iTunes opened up and notified me of the Carrier update.

I wasn't sure what this was, so I made a quick check here on MR...
Nothing, strange, at least not front page news.

I didn't want to start a new tread, 'cause that was gonna take too much time and I had too much stuff to do to be on the internet.

I was patient, here the thread is, and I was able to update, no problems, at work.

I love the MacRumor boards!
Now if I could stop spoiling myself and be surprised with Apple announcements...

I did the update for my 2G iPhone and have not noticed any difference in coverage quality. It has been a pretty invisible update for me so far.

another article explaining what this is about

Hmmm.... It seems to indicate it's for a new service. Is that right? Or is it something our 3G iPhones will automatically take advantage of when it rolls out? Or is it yet another add-on?

After the 2.2.1 update, my iPhone has been acting weird. The Apple Store guys told me I should power my iPhone off once a day. But since the 2.2.1 update, restarting my iPhone often brings up the "connect to iTunes" picture, as if I were activating the device for the first time. If I power down and reboot, I'm back to my usual home screen, only with a message that my iPhone has been activated. Hopefully that will be fixed.

My iPhone also has had lots of trouble locking into 3G mode; it keeps bouncing back and forth from 3G to EDGE. And it also often loses my WiFi connection. I just rebooted my iPhone and there was no activation screen. But it's still switching between EDGE and 3G.

I was in the library today, a place where I usually get Edge or 1 or 2 3G bars. Today I had full 3G bars in there after I updated.

What changed?

This is interesting.

I am just north of Atlanta and neither iPhone in my house is getting asked about this update when hooked to iTunes.

My understanding, is that there will be a box in your home that will allow your 3G iPhone to hookup to Broadband and operate your iPhone (voice calls) via your Broadband or DSL connection. AT&T M-Cell Logos are due out pretty soon.

I got the update too. Crossing my fingers that it will improve 3G in my area as it's been very spotty the last few weeks (dropping from 3G, to Edge to whatever is slower than Edge, then back to 3G... all within 30-40 sec).

Got the update yesterday.

I'm on a Mac, and i have a 3G.

Didn't mess up jailbreak at all.

I finally updated. So far, I have not experienced any appreciable difference. But, anyways, I never really had any problems (in the DC area).

Guys, it's not going to do anything noticeable. It doesn't improve your service. That's not what it's for. AT&T is introducing a new thing that you can buy that will boost your signal when you're in an area in which they have poor coverage. You have to pay extra for it and this update is just updating the software so it can support this new piece of hardware.

Here's an article explaining it: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/02/06/atts_3g_microcell_to_patch_iphone_dead_zones.html

It's basically like if you have crappy service in your house or apartment, then you can buy this thing and put it in your house and it will give you really good localized service. Wireless Carriers making a move on voip and home phones if you ask me.

Two items:

Why do first gen iphones get the update (I got mine a day or so ago)? Microcells aren't supported on non-3G devices.

I get paying for the device, but, the monthly fee of $5.00 seems a bit much to me. I mean, isn't the carrier supposed to provide adequate coverage? Seems to me that you should get a deduction from your plan because you are using your electricity to plug a hole in their coverage that you already pay for.
