I think most people would disagree with you, unless you're talking about portrait AND landscape mode.

In any case, I have zero interest in a portrait Magic Keyboard (unless it also supported landscape). And I would much, much rather have a landscape camera.
Yes both orientations of course.
For video calls, isn’t portrait better? I laid out my reasons in this thread I recently made.

Because a company as big as this can surely redesign an entry iPad (which will basically be a watered down version of the Air) without it impacting the bottom line too much. Because the current iPad looks unbelievably ancient compared to literally anything else on the market. Also a company as big as Apple can eat the initial cost increase to get it into the hands of as many people as possible.

The R&D costs are pretty much already spent when they redesigned the Air and the Mini. The manufacturing changes is what perhaps is going to be the initial outlay. Again, Apple can eat this in the short run - because y’know that’s the cost of doing business.

They’re not doing YOU a favour by redesigning. People really need to start expecting more from companies.
I don't mind the current design, some people still prefer the physical home button. I just wished they reduced the bezels a bit, but other than that it is a fantastic design. If you don't like it, then you can move up to the iPad Air or iPad Pro. Not everyone is a fan of rounded screen corners.

I'm perfectly OK with them keeping the home button and headphone jack, but what they really need to do is laminate the display. And hopefully thin out the bezels. Thinner bezels + laminated display would be a home run at $329, or event $379.

Uh wut?!? For mainstream consumers, the regular iPads are most definitely the best value overall out of all of Apple's iPads.

We don't know what the margins are exactly on the regular iPads vs. the higher end models, but typically the analyst estimates have stated the higher end models have had higher margins than the lower end models, or else the margins have been similar. And even if the profit margin on a high end device were to be slightly lower in percentage terms, the absolute real profit on the high end device will be higher, because it's priced that much higher.

But that's besides the point, since for most people there's not much reason to pay OVER TWICE AS MUCH to get a device that does the exact same thing just with a few more bells and whistles.
You are confusing "best value" with "good value compared to other tablets and the most accessible due to low starting price".

I'm not arguing that anyone needs a more expensive iPad the 10.2" 9th Gen.

But most of its value relies solely on the SoC. The rest of the components are very cheap in 2022.

The same cannot be said for the components found in the 12.9" iPad Pro. It also relies on its market-leading SoC, yes. But the display, SSD, RAM, wireless radios, speakers, cameras, LiDAR sensor, etc., are far, far more expensive by comparison.

I take it you didn’t read my thread post. That’s ok. But why is a landscape screen better for video calls?
I read your post but I don’t see the logic in it. For FaceTime I always prefer landscape mode. One reason is that it keeps the top of the screen lower so that it doesn’t block my Mac mini’s screen behind it for example.

Actually, I use my iPad 100% of the time in landscape mode. Regarding browsing, I much prefer landscape mode even without the keyboard, because of the width of the screen. In portrait mode the page is too cramped for my preference.

As mentioned, mainstream users don’t need most of that stuff. LiDAR? Faster SSD? Better camera? Having those features adds little value for the vast majority of iPad users. Even the mini-LED screen and additional RAM is only an incremental upgrade for most users.

I like iPad Pros and own one myself, but I don’t for a second think they’re a great value over entry level iPads for most users.

Why does EVERY freaking case have a holder for the Pencil. It infuriates me.

It basically stopped me from buying a 2018/2020 iPad Pro, because every rugged case with stand had a monster hole for a pencil and added that much extra thickness to the size.

Or other cases that purposely expose a side so the damn pencil can stick to it.

I see I see. Curious, what size iPad do you use?

I currently have a 10.5” iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard. My next iPad will likely be a 11-12” if/when it goes OLED. 2024? iPad Air or iPad Pro.

That probably explains part of my preference. I find the 13” too big to carry around regularly.

I’m 90+% Portrait mode on my 1st gen IPP 12.9
In terms of screen width, that would be more manageable for surfing in portrait mode, although still not my preference.

iPad Pro 11” is 9.05” in landscape.
iPad Pro 13” is 7.76” in portrait.

If they remove the headphone jack it will cause a lot of issues in the education market.
Have you ever tried managing a classroom set of Bluetooth headphones in a primary school? Using a USB-C or Lightning dongle is similarly unrealistic and prone to loss/damage.

This is the year of big gambles for Apple.

First, "you no longer have to deal with a SIM card!"

And soon "you no longer have to deal with wired headphones!"

I know they already did that once, but it's worse this time for exactly the reason mentioned. Which also applies to SIM cards. We weren't ready for the hard transition, same as with the headphone jack first time around.

It's all anyone really needs in an iPad.
True, but for some, the outdated looks stopped them from buying it. It looks like Apple may be giving those people the change they were waiting for. I guess even some Apple executives were thinking why are we still selling that outdated looking thing.

Looks like maybe leaks are close to reality? It looks like a square 10.5 screen, a iphone xs style camera cutout, and touch id power button. The product photo doesn't look to have a home button, though that isn't really confirmation tbf.
The big case edge cutout on the left side of the photo makes me believe/hope for a Touch ID power button.

No, it will be getting the A14, probably with 4 GB of RAM. That is the same chip that is in the iPad Air 4 and it isn't getting Stage Manager.
I think it's more of a marketing/positioning decision on Apple's part. It may get Stage Manager minus external display support.

I see, yeah, smaller than 12.9” iPads are more cramped in portrait, especially for certain sites.

Based on these, no more TouchID home button.
Good find @Mescagnus. Magnetic back.

P.S. The keyboard with trackpad in Canada is US English, at CA$161. Nice. Hopefully it doesn't suck.

[EDIT] Damn. It doesn't support passthrough charging. It's a Bluetooth keyboard. [/EDIT]

Apple Canada sells the Smart Keyboard Folio without trackpad for CA$239 and the Magic Keyboard with trackpad for CA$399.

Probably at worst it would be $10 for the adapter (maybe there are cheaper adapters too) and they would use the same headphones, they just would charge the iPad every night and have enough power for the day (10 hours use) while using the USB-C port for the headphone adapter. Not too bad.

If they lose the adapter they probably already lose the headphones too so big whoop, they‘ll have to stock up on adapters AND headphones.

I actually still carry an adapter on my keychain, back from my iPhone 7 Plus days.

Uncourage!
