Apple could score a major victory with current users, if they offered a new phone as a cheap upgrade only to existing owners, with their trade-in iPhone.

I really thought the name would end up being iPhone 9 (successor to iPhone 8) ... it’s simple and straightforward.

but now I’m not so sure. These case makers may be hinting at the name if it’s this close to an announcement.

I wonder how this would change their naming for the year then?

iPhone and iPhone Plus
iPhone 11
iPhone Pro (5.4”/6.1”)
iPhone Pro 5G (6.1”) and iPhone Pro 5G Max??

seems like a much more convoluted line up than

iPhone 9 and 9 plus
iPhone 11
iPhone 12 (5.4 and 6.1)
iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max (6.1 and 6.7)

Until then would be iPhone 9, XR, 11 and 11 Pro/Max.

sticking with numbers keeps it simple. I know some people find it confusing but for most people, they know 9 is better than 8 and 7 and 6 etc. Same design language so keeping that number makes sense.

But they may not call it 9 because it could also lead to confusion. (“Why is the new iPhone the 9 and less than the X two years ago?”)

it’s like how they planned to call the iPhone SE the 5SE but felt it was too convoluted a name and looked “less than” the 6 and 6s at the time

I was certain iPhone 9 was the best name overall but now I’m not sure, and I don’t think it will be called that.

it won’t have an English suffix like classic or something because much of the world’s market Apple sells their phones to doesn’t speak English or have that spelling of the word. But I did ponder if they’d call it iPhone Classic following the iPod Classic naming scheme.

This is just the iPhone 6/7/8, right? Why do people care so much?

What would be the point in that?

It’s basically a few things

1) still a new product launch so it has some excitement

2) low cost iPhone with modern internals. For much of the worlds market this is “the iPhone” and so sales over its lifetime should be good

3) some people here are interested in upgrading to it, not everyone on MR or MR family members have the latest and greatest. Some people don’t care for the newest phones or want to keep grandfathered plans and prefer to buy outright, and this phone is ideal for those consumers. Other general consumers also have older iPhones and this proves an easier way for them to upgrade (cheaper cell phone plans).

4) It’s a good way for the large iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 user base to upgrade to iOS 13 as well, as Apple makes much of their revenue now from services so it’s enticing the iPhone 6 user to get on iOS 13, maybe get Apple Music and TV+, maybe some AirPods or iCloud storage too

When I asked “what would be the point of that” I was referring to someone saying they should only sell it to current iPhone owners.

The best backup phone is whatever your last phone was. Because it doesn’t cost you anything. :)

One lens And a flash, most likely

Not really. Holding onto your old phone can be costly. I upgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro this year by trading in an iPhone 7. The trade in discounts gave me $1000 In bill credits since I was porting over a new line, in good condition etc. I couldn’t sell my iPhone 7 for $300 (More like $200 for my min storage size) on the private market.

It would Actually Be CHEAPER in my situation to trade in My old phone and buy the rumored $399 phone as a backup. Plus, you have a new battery and modern tech.

I buy a new phone every year, and keep the old phone in a shoebox when not using it for on-device testing :)

My grandma is 76. Her first iPhone was the 5. I last upgraded her with a 6S but the screen is dying in it and I’ve been waiting to get her something new that’s also familiar. I’m excited for the 9 because it will be similar to what she’s used to (home button, bezels, and all) but updated enough in processor/memory that I won’t have to worry about upgrading her for another several years. She’d be so confused by the button-less Xs and 11s.

We’ve seen this before from past iPhone models. The problem with these case manufacturers, is they can create them in advanced based off the specifications that has been leaked/rumored, but it doesn’t mean that it will be a reality of when this iPhone will be imminently released. Although, I do think it’s safe to say we have a strong idea of what this phone will look like.

When the leak is in a retail box at a Best Buy warehouse, this isn’t a “based off leaked specs” sort of situation.

Would be awesome if Apple surprised us with an iPhone 9 Plus model, would be a great replacement phone for my 8 Plus. But we’ll see. Otherwise I think I will buy the 11 when the 12 is released.
By the way: that is by far the ugliest phone case i have ever seen. Yikes!

Jon Prosser has a very solid track record for recent leaks, so I’m taking his word on the 9+ being a real thing for now. Definitely gonna grab one whenever it launches.
