I either use a bumper, or go naked. I ordered a white frost Incase Snap for my 4S, but we'll see if I actually use it.

Ordered front and back crystal clear screen protectors from Power Support to prevent minor table or pocket scratches.

Other than that, I will be going naked since I'm purchasing AppleCare+ and not worried about drops.

I too am going to be getting my first IP... going from an android that is twice the thickness I'm really looking forward to the smaller form factor (in fact i went into an apple store for the first time yesterday just to ask if they would let me slide it into my pocket), so now i'm really wrestling with all this as well.

I know i'll be docking it on my clock, for which i've lost all the adapters so I assume it will fit with almost anything. I'm a little bit anal about scratches and I'm worried about rubber bumpers making it get stuck in my pocket, so I'm leaning right now towards a combination of screen protectors and some kind of thin, protective case that is somewhere between sticky rubber and plastic.

Besides that I think I will gamble on not breaking the front and dealing with a cracked rear by just purchasing a high-quality metal back, which gives me a 50% chance of having to deal with the larger fee or just more technical work of replacing the screen myself. Dropped my android plenty, though, and it's just as ugly as ever. AC+ might make sense to me in the future, but for now i'm a student.

Obsolete in one or two years? You serious?

An iPhone always has strong resale value as long as it is working and in good condition cosmetically. Also I'm using a case because I hate how slippery the iP4 is sans case. Even if I was filthy rich I'd use a case with the iP4 to provide it with a better grip, etc.

An iPhone is a high end investment for many.

I honestly thought you were joking in your reply but you are serious. Wow.

I agree with you on the resale value, but a high end investment? Lets be honest here, an investment is something that benefits you in the future. Even if you sell your iPhone for more than you paid (very possible if you paid the subsidized price) your return is nothing I would classify as "high end". I totally agree that you should take care of your phone the best you can, but to call it a high end investment seems far fetched.

WOW! thanks for all the input guys! seeing lots of great ideas here. I think I'm going to get get a skin to cover the entire phone... maybe an invisible shield. reason why is i know my mall has a kiosk that installs them for you. I have always been terrible at putting screen protectors and would like it installed for me. does anyone have experience with zaggs product on the ip4?

The other day I installed my ultimate protection Zagg shield... Turned out really odd. But I actually wouldn't even recommend the product, regardless of my applying skills.

Anyways, does anyone know if cases degrade the battery's overall lifespan? Like, when batteries are in a hot car, their life span goes down. If the phone's in a case, wouldn't that trap the heat? This is just a general hypothesis, I don't actually know anything scientific. lol

Ordered a Sena Ultraslim white pouch for my white 4s. Had it shipped FedEx 2 day :D...naked otherwise

Get the white Graft Concepts case. It's beautiful. You can go with it as a "bumper" style or with the back plate for protection like in the pic below.

Not my image.

expensive but awesome, might get one.

Ordered a Best Skins Ever (Used one on my iPad 2 and loved it) and a Incase Snap Clear. Will probably go with the Incase first and go from there.
I ordered a BSE body protection (no front) last night. I'm gonna try to go as near naked as possible, but I may spring for a white bumper, just to keep the lens from getting scratched when the phone is laying on a table.
