It will shatter very easy regardless of what Apple claims.

As proven by multiple videos, the 8 won't shatter unless it's dropped from a height greater than about 6ft. So most drops will not cause the back to shatter. If I had an iPhone 8, I'd probably go caseless - and I'm quite a big case person. But when Apple do something to make their devices a little more robust, such as they have with the 8, I'm happy to take advantage of that. I loved the glass back of the iPhone 4 and I had that caseless too. But ever since then, iPhones have been weak and slippy.
[doublepost=1506527867][/doublepost]Wow, that sucks :(
It came with a chip in the back glass like that? Time to take it back for a return.

My plan was to use it caseless, so i opened the box and took out my new 8 Plus:

YES ootb like that .... going back

Yes, its definitely an expensive item.
Its not an investment product though :D
I dont know about the bumper, that does cover all 4 corners but doesnt cover the glass back. So its still a risk if it lands on the back.
Without Applecare plus I heard it would be $350 to get that repaired/replaced though. Too much money IMO.
We will have many people blaming Apple after they crack theirs for the decision of a fragile back piece for sure :D

My $8 case.

Peace of mind... 3 years of Plus phones with many drops on concrete floors at work... no damage.

Seems silly not to...

If people wanna go caseless I say go for it... the "I dropped my phone and shattered the glass" threads go great with popcorn.

It really depends on the user. I haven't broken a screen in 7 years of naked phone usage. The amount of money I could have spent on cases and protectors would pay for a broken screen by now.

Some people manage to break their phones even with cases and screen protectors.

I have the 8+ caseless for now until I receive the Spigen Thin Fit case

The slippery feel and extra weight over my previous 6+ With case has me being extra careful

Check out those videos I linked:D
Its glass so obviously its a way bigger risk than metal. It could survive some drops but then break/shatter if dropped and hits at a certain spot or angle. Its up to you if you want to risk it and feel that it will only break under extreme circumstances.

That's not true. Almost every video I've seen shown it not to shatter unless under extreme circumstances. This thing won't smash in most cases.
[doublepost=1506537657][/doublepost]That is true but what you did so far up to today from 7 years ago it doesnt mean you will never drop it in the future.
It only takes one time to fall down and then one could be looking at spending $350-400 for the back glass or $150+ for the front screen.
So you'd be lucky to break the front panel instead of the rear :D

Everything carries a risk. Using a case or buying insurance like Applecare mitigates it. It depends on the user's tendency to break phones and their risk appetite. There is no right or wrong choice.

A user who has a low tendency to break phones might have low risk appetite so he uses a case or buys Applecare, or both.

A user with a high tendency to break phones might have a high risk appetite and so always pays the price. And etc.

Of course just because someone hasn't broken a phone in years doesn't mean they won't in the future. If I choose to go caseless and my phone breaks, I'll just pay to have it fixed. It was a risk I took.

I hear you on that.
I never broke an iphone for about 10 years now but an accidental drop on an iphone 8 plus could end up being a $400 accident.
Ouch :D

This is the reason why I put a case on my wife's and mother's iPhone 8 plus immediately after unboxing them. My mother is old and drops stuff sometimes.

My wife is worse. I know it'll break within a week without a case. She drops her phone more times in 7 days than me in 7 years. on day 1 my son already used her phone as a surfboard and she could care less!

This... I'm wondering if I'll enjoy my phone more without a case due to this fact. I know I treat my phone not as carefully as I could because I have a screen protector / case on it, which gives me some freedom, but at the same time, I think I'd enjoy the phone a lot more without.

It is nice throwing my phone into my Chevy Cobalt's cupholder without worrying about damage to the phone. But I want to go naked so bad! Ah, really torn... Always admired how members like eyoungren go caseless.

Why don’t you go with a bumper case? Best of both worlds.

Time to revive this thread. I really thought I would be using PITAKA cases on my iPhone X, but I'm so worried about scratching the steel edges, that I've been strictly using the Apple Silicone cases since launch. Anybody care to join in on the convo? I'm just not about to drop $50 on the PITAKA case to just have it scratch up my phone.
