A quote from the piece on Apple from 60 minutes:

Ive explained that zeroing in on a product's "emotional context" is a big part of Apple's development process—investing lots of time experimenting with materials, surfaces, textures, colors, shapes, to arrive at the right tactile experience. He showed the 10 prototypes for the iPhone 6 and 6s that had been made with their in-house machining tools, before landing on the two sizes that "felt right."

Seems a shame that we put cases on our iPhones when all this time is spent to make them feel right huh?

We kill them with plastic and blocky rubber cases.

You should have gotten a really thin case

every Iphone I see at work that doesn't have a case is either all scratched up or has a broken screen. I always have mine in a case and I've dropped it several times. My phone is still new looking. I have the Iphone 7.

Every iPhone I have ever owned, literally is in mint condition if I choose to sell it or keep it. I never use cases. But I’m also somebody that doesn’t treat my property negligently either. I take care of my belongings and it shows. I think it depends on the user and how accident prone they are as well.

I agree. the cracked or scratched phones I see don't have a case and they always keep them in their front or back pocket. I either use a clip or a pouch on my belt and all my phones are still new looking after a year or so.

You may agree and in your own personal experience it is true.

But @Relentless Power and myself do not use cases and his phone and mine are perfect. No cracked screens, no scrapes, scratches, dings or dents.

And my 6s+ has been carried for 2.5 years without a case.

I use a case just because the phone is way too slippery. It takes much less effort to hold with a rubber/silicone case.

It also makes it land softly on surfaces and not make an obnoxious buzz when it vibrates while on a hard surface.

That is an old and often repeated justification here.

It's been said many many times, starting at the very least with the iPhone 4. Yet, many people manage to go through life with these slippery iPhones without cases and not drop or damage them.

So, while it being slippery might be a justifcation for you it's not a reason, because obviously it's not too slippery for others.

People are not uniform either. Different builds and body chemistry. It may not be too slippery for you but it might be to someone else.

Honestly, I don't get why there must be one right answer when it comes to going caseless or not.

And that is my point.

People present their own personal experiences as fact. Well, what may be fact to one person is not fact to another because that person's experience is entirely different. So stating that it's too slippery is not a reason if it doesn't apply across the board. At most it's a justification for that person's own experience.

I just know my iPhone would have been smashed long ago without the Spigen case I have on it. A mixture of dropping it myself, my children using it, and using it for work just means it gets a physical hammering. I wouldn’t say I mistreat it by any means, but it does get a decent amount of daily use. It is a tool at the end of the day for me so worrying about scratches or drops is more of an after thought.

But that's why you use a case right? So you don't have to worry about that?

Note, I'm not trying to be sarcastic or confrontational with my question. I'm just seeing if that confirms (or not) my general assessment of those who use cases.

If the phone does get damaged then my home insurance covers it anyway. The case is the first line in preventing damage.

I was only speaking for myself, so you can relax with the snarky attitude.

However, aluminum is absolutely more slippery than rubber/silicone. It absolutely does take more force to grip as a result. Whether or not that amount is acceptable is up to the user, though.

The other points still stand. When the phone is on vibrate and on a table, it's very loud. It slides incredibly easy across surfaces (if it isn't perfectly level, or a car seat, etc). It rattles in cupholders.

So for me, the experience is much better than having no case.

I have an Apple Saddle Brown leather fetish, so my iPhone X wears a case because I like it better that way.

I don't have the vibrate problem. I suppose I might if I ever used it, but it's the very first thing I turn off with every new smartphone I get.

So, I have not ever experienced that.

As to the rest, you may be right. But whether it's harder to grip or not the fact remains that there are plenty of people out there who have the same phone you do, do not have a case on it and don't have any problems.

Snarky or not that is all I am trying to point out, as your initial comment didn't seem to take that into account.

I recently got an 8+. The way I drop things, no way I will not use a case. Yes, the iPhone does look better without one, but, for me, better safe than sorry. The Lifeproof Fre works well without being too bulky.
I am a clutz myself. I will admit I have dropped my phone. It just hasn't been damaged.

That said, a lot of the things I do is to protect my phone from other people. Other people and their inattention and often self-absorbed, inconsiderate mannerisms are the biggest danger to my phone.

Additionally, the concept of personal space seems to be largely ignored in this day and time.

I caved and bought a case for my X, mainly for when I'm out and about (I over wash my hands at home, when out the phone starts to get pretty slippery sometimes).

Tried something different this time, rather than a plastic case went with the Apple leather case and been pretty happy with it. I don't even bother to take it off at home! Not using a tempered glass protector, having a good run with the Pixel 2 I had before, I figured she'll be right. With the swipe up gesture from the bottom, having the lip of the glass would bug me.

I remember when I had the 5 while I was working on a mine site as a trade assistant, used that naked and use to put it in my top pocket a lot. It would constantly fall out when I bent over to pick stuff up, I threw it a few times so it would be closer to the Bluetooth speaker that was starting to cut out, it developed the unresponsive power button issue. I would smash the button against a metal box to get it to work, ended up putting a solid dent in the band and somehow didn't break the screen. Then later on Apple had the replacement program for the button. Phone was out of warranty and walked in and out with a refurbished one!

Out of the 15 phones with glass screens, I've only managed to break one, which was a Galaxy S8+ and only because I use to spin my phone (held between my thumb and middle finger) sometimes while sitting down, and it slipped out from knee height haa.

I keep my 8+ in a Tech 21 case unless I’m sat on the couch or in bed :D It isn’t pretty but it’s necessary when I’m using it all the time at work. It’s absolutely flawless despite dropping it a few times.

Speaking of which, yesterday I was with a customer who came in looking to upgrade to an 8+ and he’d never used a Plus before so he asked to see mine. I happily passed it over in its case and then he asked to see it without its case on... slightly less happily, I took it out of its case and the absolute moron basically grabbed it out of my hands without even asking and almost dropped it - careless - three foot onto a rock hard floor. I honestly would have been sacked for violence. Some people, eh?

Apple leather case feels so right for the iPhone that I feel it should have been shipped that way. Even though X is heavier than previous generation, leather makes is grippy and removes strain to the wrist from single hand operation. Than that premium feel of high quality leather

I use a case on my 8+. In part because of its size - the phone is larger than my entire hand when lain flat on my palm - and in part because I have weak hands in general and I tend to drop things a lot. I use a Loopy case and have for a couple of years now. Women's clothing frequently has no pockets, and when I am running around at a work event holding my personal phone and my work phone, it is added security for devices that cost more than my mortgage payment. I have never sold a phone, so that doesn't come into play. As someone noted early on in the discussion, my "experience" is the IOS, the apps, the functionality. I have no emotional attachment to the back of my phone and how it looks. I mean, it's pretty, and I like choosing a color, but <shrug>. Others feel differently, and that's ok. If you can manage to never drop your phone, good on you. I drop my phone, my straw at lunch, my keys, my contact lens in the sink, the other half of my sandwich, my glasses....you get the picture. That phone's getting a case.
