CD/DVD drive broke and right speaker connection destroyed; cosmetically tarnished.

The Genius Appointment does not cost you ... you said you have AppleCare.

Try to relax a bit, Apple has been known to help people when they really shouldn't. Like I said be very polite when you take it in ... it is up to whichever Genius you talk to if they will help or not ... be desperate, calm, and polite.

Iphone 3GS slow?

I want to get the Iphone 3GS because the 4 doesn't look as good, but does it run the latest software slow?

If you don't have any money, don't buy a $1200+ laptop. It's that simple.
This.

Quit being such a spaz and try to be receptive to the help people are offering.

This.

If you do not have money, and you own an expensive item, take care of it! Be more careful! I understand that issues happen, but it is not that difficult to take extra precautions to keep nice things nice.

Good luck.

Heyy, don't worry about it! Okay, it's still under warranty, but listen.. you can take it to the apple store and then start crying or do something sad in front of the people at the genuis bar where they fix the computers..They can still look at it and tell you whats wrong with it for FREE. if the computer is even 10 years old, diagnostics are FREE, so they will tell you if something is blocking it.. or what exactly is wrong.. they HAVE too. Then, it might be something simple, like the shutters are stuck or something, and you could do it yourself. if it's something simple that they could do right then and there in front of you, then you are fine. they will fix it for you, but if it costs them, you have to pay.. I'm really sorry): I hope it gets better, or you get it fixed or something.. but also remember apple sells external DVD drvies for cheap, that are apple brand, so they will work, they are small and work fine, I need to get one myself, because my black macbook stopped burning discs -_-

He doesn't need to pout, cry or look sad. Just make an appointment and go in. Or fix it yourself.

Step 9 should only fit one way. It just connects to pins if my memory is right. Are you sure its aligned the right way? Take a breather and come back. It will get easier.

It should just push on.

thanks i appreciate you being nice.
i may have to take it to the apple store, youre right.
Still, i dont want to take in there with a big dent, disconnected speakers, and a broken DVD drive. They will probably take one look at it and tell me it costs something like $400...

Sigh...

There isn't anything there to push it on to. I've pressing and prodding with it for an hour and a half and it seems like there is something missing :(

When i popped it off I heard no noises, nothing fell off... it looked just like the picture. there is no residue or anything on it so it couldnt have been glue.

Do NOT use glue....

It is designed to snap in and if it isn't then it is likely that you have broken the clip. Don't make a bigger mess of your mac, just take it in and let an expert look at it.

that laptops should not be made from aluminum. Apple, it's time to start using carbon fiber. Stop skimping on your customers!

Yes, lets move from a relatively ductile material to a very brittle one. Not to mention the may ill effects CF has with any sort of radio transmission, nor the increase in time of laying up the fiber and machining it vs the relatively easy aluminum.

I am always amazed at the love affair CF gets. Yes, it is awesome for certain applications, but hardly awesome for most

Feel free to skip my post if you don't like it. I will reply to a post as I see fit

With that said, why not just get on CL and buy a used external dvd drive....

Read the thread! it's more than that.

I don't even know if either of my parents can take me to the Apple store. My mom doesn't have a drivers license and my dad is at work during their hours.

Now I'm just hoping I can get the speaker connector ON, much less getting the DVD drive to work now

WOW...just wow...

People have offered you good advice and you get petulant.

Truthfully, no one here had offered any advice — they just kept saying "why do you even need a CD drive?" blah blah blah.

I've got to agree with the OP — people are often very cynical on these forums. If he/she says they NEED their DVD drive, there's no reason to say, "Well why do you need it? I never use it, so I swapped it out for a hard drive!" "optical drives are dead" etc etc. and then not give an alternative explanation.

Half the time that I post questions on this forum, I feel like I have to provide some detailed description about why I do things the way I do, when it has nothing to do with the problem. Yeeesh.

To the OP: sorry to hear about your computer. About the only thing I could recommend is consider trying to get an external DVD reader/burner. There are several good options here.

If you're really in a pinch, you can use another Mac's DVD drive using Firewire target disk mode.

Then you clearly didn't read the thread. I stated that a while back but the OP said that he doesn't have any money. He has also moved on to trying to fix it himself and damage a connector. People offered sound advice, he just chose not to take it.

You have offered Zero advice that has not already been given (and added some whining of your own) ... however you do sound like some kind of knight in shining armour

read the post ... you are just repeating advice that has already been given

You're young. I have advice to help you. It's a solid bet you will ignore it. But it's quite possibly the most helpful advice given to you thus far.

Your laptop is broken. It was a gift. You have no funds to pay to get it fixed. You have three choices:

1: Deal without it.
2: Attempt to fix it yourself.
3: Attempt to get assistance from Apple.

If you do #1, I would respect you for realizing that it is an object - not a life-or-death situation.

If you do #2, I would feel inclined to reach through my monitor and slap you upside the head, given you hadn't tried #3 yet.

If you do #3, you really have nothing to lose. If they tell you it's going to cost money that you don't have, then you've at least tried that outlet. But how do you know what's what they'll say? How do you know they won't help you out? How do you know if you don't even bother asking the question? You know what they say about assuming.

You've said things like you've got no license and mom has no license and you have no friends with licenses - correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe public transportation exists in just about every city.

You've said that you have no money and you just want "help". Help with what? A few people have told you to take it Apple; you refused. A few more people told you to get an external drive to get you by; you refused. The only suggestion you've listened to are hacked together instructions that should not be attempted by an amateur. Sounds to me like you already had your mind made up before coming here, so why'd you post? For our blessing? I'm certainly not going to condone that you try to fix your own machine and I shake my head at anyone else who has. It's the LAST thing you should do.

My advice? Get off the forum, sit in a room for 5 minutes and think about what the smartest option is of the three I presented above. Do it on your own. Don't ask for help here. Because the next thing you'll be doing is coming back up in here yelling at people because you screwed up your machine even more.

Library cards are generally free and you can read all the books you want for entertainment. I suggest you do this until you can afford to fix your luxery items.[/QUOTE]

I love the library! they're so awesome. They let you borrow these ancient instruments made out of trees that contain vast amounts of knowledge or even fictional stories! It's come in so handy during these hard times!

I don't have any advice to give that hasn't already been given, but I'd like to add that part of the reason people aren't being very helpful (although most are...) is because you sound quite bratty. You want everyone to help you NOW NOW NOW and you want this all done YOUR way. It kind of sounds like your family was quite well off and lost everything from the way you are acting. Savings at 18 - you laugh at that? Sounds kind of spoiled to me. Kids start saving as soon as they get their first dollar~ people who have never had money are HAPPY to have any old laptop. You should be grateful you still had a laptop.
Maybe you can cry to Apple about how no one on the forums helped you and they'll feel sorry for you.

Laptop is not in THAT bad of a shape - I suggest you sell it to someone who can do the proper repairs, you should still get plenty from the sale of it. Then just go out and buy some dirt cheap crappy laptop that works with the money, and give up on luxury for now. Doesn't sound like you can afford the luxury right now.

Based on how he has responded thus far in this thread, I think the chances of him alienating the Apple Genius are pretty good.

The current damage to his computer would need an "Academy Award performance" of tears and and desperation.

If he goes with an accusatory manner...as he has done here...game over.

lol ... I tend to agree ... just did not want to be the one to say it.

you are right ... game over ... checkmate

Not trying to burst your bubble, but the lady next to me (while we were at the genius bar - I was having my Mac looked at too, since I dropped it and screwed it up a little), well, she was quoted $1250 for repairs. She dropped hers too
