ok but what are we going to do about the whole "surf and talk" issue that verizon apparently is not capable of?

It's the same issue with an iPhone 2G (or anywhere without ATT 3G coverage). EDGE is either data or voice, but you can't use both simultaneously. It's clearly never been a deal-breaker for Apple

The CDMA phone is the China phone. The Verizon phone is the LTE phone. That means January 2011 shipping to China and CDMA countries. January 2011 Verizon announcement of iPhone coming to their network with a March 2011 delivery date so LTE will be more rolled out on release.

AT&T will announce it has been installing LTE for a solid year and will turn on their network the same day iPhone LTE ships so one can select AT&T with a low cost roaming agreement with Verizon. So AT&T will have a lower base price and verizon's roaming fee will bring the package up to the Verizon base price.

That will make the AT&T iPhone 2011 the first real high bandwidth "world phone".

Maybe not an exclusive, but a leg up.

Pretty sure i was able to use both at the same time when i had my original iphone. nonetheless i have 3g coverage all the time and so do most customers, and apple touted this feature in their iphone commercials. so im pretty sure it is a deal breaker.

So this new iPhone is just cmda not a combo cmda/gsm, I hope this new iPhone won't be bigger or externally different I woudent want 2 models. Plus since verizon is rolling out 4g witch is gsm it's stupid to do such a thing. Maby they will hold off for verizont till they role out 4g and then make one handset. Because there are many other countries that use cmda much more than the USA. Also verizons 3G isn't too fast it has much better coverage but not as fast as AT&Ts. So why would a gsm version of the iPhone go to verizon if so to screw over there costumers for a not even a half year when the new 4g iPhone comes out.

And The Drama Builds...

HA!!!! If Apple plays this smart, they can make BIG RED beg for the CDMA version of the iPhone and i wouldnt be surprised if Apple does this too, because Verizon and Google have been getting pretty cozy lately... I would totally laugh if Sprint gets it first, just to spite Verizon. Verizon may be the last carrier to get this CDMA verision....

Stay Tuned Folks....

The first ones in line to get Verizon iPhones in January will be the people who were still waiting for the white iPhone 4 in December.

If a Verizon customer can't surf and talk with their current smart phone, what difference will it make because now they have an iPhone? They are already used to not having the ability.

Until I hear Steve Jobs announce it, I don't believe it. Sure eventually the iPhone will be on other carriers. I don't think it will happen until the next gen networks are ready. Oh, and when they are ready, Those $100 a month plans will look cheap by comparison and expect ridiculous data caps too.

because apple kept making a point out of it in iphone commercials in the past.

Isn't Verizon planning to roll out GSM-based LTE next year? If so, why is Apple creating a product that will drastically lag behind literally every GSM-based LTE phone that Verizon will offer next year?

LTE is not... je repite... IS NOT...GSM. LTE is backwards compatible with both CDMA and GSM, as well.

Needs FCC approval

If I'm correct this will need FCC approval. Which means Apple will announce it right before they give it to the FCC like they did with the original iPhone, right? So that should happen very soon

LTE network won't be nationwide until 2012-2013. A phone isn't of much use if it can only be used in urban areas.

It's only a matter of time until reports of iphone browser requests originating from Verizon cellular IP addresses pop up in server logs. Of course, it's equally likely that they're fake, but would be interesting to see.

As for me, I hope it does come to Verizon. I'm a shareholder of both AT&T and Verizon, so it's a wash there, but as an AT&T customer, I want everyone to get the hell off my network so I can actually keep a call connected.

Oh, and for any any verizon android fanboys lurking here, get ready to kiss your unlimited data goodbye...

Beak even point may be around 300000 units. If they sell five millions, that will help pay for all the lawyers... And it keeps a bunch of people employed.

But, best of all, iphone in verizon may placate all the wining, until the same folks find something else to complain about.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I wonder where the Verizon label will go...

Apple and Verizon are not doing business any time soon.

Please let the dream go!

Mozambique Telco will have the iPhone before Verizon.

Not to mention who would ever release a big product like that in January. That is the worst month of the year to introduce something like that. Followed by February.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber said:
Steven Levy interview with Steve Jobs:

"If that’s so, then why is the Mac market share, even after Apple’s recent revival, sputtering at a measly 5 percent? Jobs has a theory about that, too. Once a company devises a great product, he says, it has a monopoly in that realm, and concentrates less on innovation than protecting its turf. “The Mac user interface was a 10-year monopoly,” says Jobs. “Who ended up running the company? Sales guys. At the critical juncture in the late ’80s, when they should have gone for market share, they went for profits. They made obscene profits for several years. And their products became mediocre. And then their monopoly ended with Windows 95. They behaved like a monopoly, and it came back to bite them, which always happens.”

Gruber:

The key bit: “At the critical juncture […], when they should have gone for market share, they went for profits.” I think this encapsulates Jobs’s philosophy since taking over Apple in 1997. Take the high end of the market first, establish a brand and presence, then steadily start to expand.

Makes sense to me for a Verizon-Sprint-Chinese CDMA-every other CDMA network operator iPhone. More markets = more market share, which in turn leads to more profits. Be honest with yourselves. Yes, we know that Apple doesn't like to have two of the same product (different versions). However, in the mobile phone world, there is always going to be (for the rather long time being) two differing technologies. Apple will go for market share by offering a CDMA variant.

Where can I queue up for a Verizon iPhone?
