For most people, simultaneous phone/internet is not a necessity. For those who are in a position that this is a deal breaker, then they're going to have to consider sticking with a GSM network or finding a location in which they can access WIFI while talking on the phone.
I would assume Apple has not just launched a CDMA iPhone for Verizon. I would not be surprised if more CDMA Providers announce the iPhone in the near future. Apple, like any other business leader is concerned with getting their devices in the hands of as many people as possible. Verizon may have been the main push for a CDMA variant of the device, but I doubt it will be the only CDMA provider offering the iPhone in the long run.
