As far as I can gather, Siri in it's beta form won't have all the features for every country. So certain countries might get more features for Siri compared to others.

As far as your upgrade goes, if you are fully eligible, then yes overall you will be paying the $159 plus the $35 admin fee. Just keep in mind the $159 is after a $50 mail in rebate so your bill will show $209.

I'll be very surprised if it'll be so limited here compared to the US. Did anyone have any luck with contacting Apple Canada regarding Siri features?

I hate the mail in rebate bs. I guess i'll get my $50 after 3 months..
So i'll be paying $245 upfront for the device? pretty ridiculous.

There was no pre-order system last year. And the Reservation System doesn't guarantee you your phone on the first day. It guarantees you the phone, whenever it decides to come in. That's what we (employees) are told at the store.

Oooh, an employee! I have another question for you then if you don't mind. I called Fido last week to tell them I was moving to another carrier and they ended up offering me a very nice retention plan. I wanted to lock it in then and there but they said they couldn't give me that plan and a new contract until they actually sold me a phone, which of course will be the 4S I'm waiting on. In the mean time the guy noted what he offered me on my file but said he couldn't guarantee the offer will still be there when I buy the phone and renew. Do you think they will give me any trouble about this at the store when I pick up and buy my 4S or will they probably go ahead and give me the offer?

Well that cost shows up on your bill. You don't pay it in store. And I have seen mail in rebates show up on the same bill as the phone costs, it just depends on your bill cycle and how fast it processes. And for the record, my entire store hates the mail in rebates too :p

Well I'm a Rogers employee, so I'm not too sure what Fido does in this situation. For Rogers, as long as the rep actually noted your account with what you were offered, then what'll happen is you go into the store, do the upgrade as you normally would as if you didn't call in, and then you call back and say you were offered this and that, and then they will change everything over. At store level, we have no ability to give you anymore more than what is offered through our brochure. We can help you get on the phone, but apart from that, we can't actually make the changes.

I assume Siri will be exactly the same up here as in the US. The newspaper I read specifically mentioned that the reason that Siri isn't advertised as a feature here is because it does not support Canadian French. However, the English portion of it will work just fine.

Okay, cool. Paranoid me wants to know though: what keeps them from having me buy my new phone and renew at the store and then pretend the special plan never happened, since I'm back under contract and I'm theirs for three years anyway? I guess I'm just used to cell phone companies being evil when they can… :p

Yeah I know what you mean. With Rogers, as long as you go to a Rogers Plus store (corporate) you can have us check the notes and make sure everything is there and set to go. If you go to a Rogers Wireless store those are all franchise locations so they don't have access to the second system that we do. But again, as long as it's noted on your account, they can't not offer it to you.

With Fido, I'm going to guess as long as you go to an actual Fido kiosk you'll be fine, just don't go to the kiosks that carry all the different providers. Those are always third party.

Oh understood, sorry about that. I forgot how the process is done, since the last time i got an upgrade was when the iPhone 3G first came out in '08, so this means I can walk out of a Rogers Plus store without actually paying out of my pocket?
Glad to know you share our frustration :p

So i'll be seeing $209 on my next Rogers bill?

What If i want to buy an iPhone 4? It says $149 on Rogers, but i believe it was $49 with a 3 year contract, so is this a $100 mail in rebate?

--edit--

Just read on Rogers website:

"Currently, the iPhone is only available at authorized Apple retail locations. Existing customers may upgrade their current wireless device. New Customers may purchase the iPhone, with a qualifying wireless plan at any authorized Apple dealer."

So does this mean it won't be in my local Rogers Plus store? Does this affect the payment in anyway?

Yeah you don't pay anything in store unless you buy a case or something.

If you want to buy a 4, it depends on the size. The $49 you saw will be for the new 8GB model, and its after a $50 mail in so your bill will show $99. The 16GB is $99 after the rebate and 32GB is $199.

I'm not too sure why the Rogers website says that its only available at Apple stores, my store is expecting them for launch day, so I can't fully answer that. But you can do everything at an Apple store, the use the same wireless system we do. And it'll be the same process, so same mail in rebate and again everything goes to the bill so you walk out paying nothing...for now ;)

Do you guys think the Rogers Pre orders are going to be available to pick up on Friday or next week?

Thanks! I've called my local Rogers Plus store and they said that they'll be carrying it.

Last question, is there any difference buying an iPhone from the Apple store or the Rogers store? I heard that if you buy the subsidized price iPhone from the Apple store, it is automatically unlocked.

I plan on selling the 4S for the next iPhone, so i'd like to know if an unlock is possible.

I'm #30 and my status is open. I started of on Friday at 110. Hoping to get mine on the 14th.

I hate this new 30month upgrade policy they have implemented. 3 years contracts are absurd as it is now they do this foolishness. I hope they get theirs one day. They really do gauge the customers.

someone has started this petition. So in addition to complaining on the red boards, you can sign this. Maybe something good will come of it.

I'm number 113 for a 64GB Black iPhone 4S.

However, I used the upgrade tool and it says I have to pay about $874. Way to go Rogers. The $50 rebate is a joke as well because they charge $50 more for each model ($209/$319/$419), which basically negates any savings. I believe these prices ($50 more for each model) are for existing customers only though.

Given that they have provided upgrade promotions in the past, I was kind of expecting them to have one this time, but at the moment that is not the case. Hopefully Rogers offers an upgrade offer at the last minute, because this is ridiculous.

Last year I upgraded to the iPhone 4 and it cost me $549 for a 32GB iPhone 4. I sold my iPhone 3GS for $500 which really helped, and I was hoping it would be similar this year.

UPDATE: now IN PROGRESS :D

Nice.
Guess I should have got a white model - I'm still looking at an OPEN case. I ordered 1 minute after the reservation opened. Will hopefully see something soon!

I believe if you get the subsidized price at the Apple store, the iPhone is locked to that carrier. If you get a factory unlocked iPhone & paying full price for it, it will be truly unlocked and able to be used with any of the carriers.

Rogers

iPhone 4s - 64GB black (x 2)
Position: 78 and 132 (started at 99 and 153)
Status: Open

I'm hoping the status changes today.

Also, FYI, the first rep I spoke with at Rogers said that it would cost me $320 + $35 + the subsidized price of the phone to upgrade. I said that for about $50 less I could cancel my service and go to another carrier. She agreed. I asked to speak to Customer Relations. The girl at Customer Relations said that Rogers has a policy that for people who have upgraded to the new iPhone every year since it came to Canada they are eligible for the subsidized price alone (no Early Hardware Upgrade fee). I confirmed this with her twice and got the reference number for the call. I confirmed that what she had told me was in her notes on the call. I went ahead and used the Reservation System. I'm sure I'll pay full price for the phones but will call in and have them reference the notes on my file to get the difference back.

Yup this is correct. You have to pay for the unsubsidized model at the Apple store for it to be unlocked. Getting it on an upgrade does not qualify it to be factory unlocked, so you would have to wait for the jailbreak community to release one.

I talked with a Rogers rep today about the $50 rebate. Turns out it is not 'mail in' at all. Once you get your phone, log into My Rogers and go into "Products & Services". Under the "Wireless" tab, select your phone number and you should see a link labeled "Redeem Rebate" underneath the picture of the phone.

The link is not there now, but I assume it should show up on launch day. Hopefully what he told me isn't a bunch of BS. My last upgrade was three years ago (iPhone 3G), so I (and others who are eligible to upgrade) should be eligible for the new customer prices that are advertised.
