My story..... Went to bestbuy Friday morning, and bought a 16gb wifi.

Heard about the free tmobile, so returned the ipad to best buy and went to local corp tmobile store. The woman that helped me was very nice.

I had to do a credit check...... Not sure why since I purchased the ipad outright. She signed me up for the $30 2.5 gb plan. Said to call and they will credit me the $30, and switch me to the free 200mb plan.

She said over 200 is throttled but still free unlimited. I think she's incorrect.

Pretty excited to have a cellular/gps ipad. All the others were wifi only.

Best bet is to just call 1-800TMOBILE because I spent time at 2 brick-and-mortar stores today and was fed a bunch of crap about having to have a voice line with T-Mobile or having to pay for the device IN FULL to receive the free data (even worse!).

Instead, I called their customer sales line and the representative was so thorough in explaining every single detail in regards to their installment plan for the iPad Air as well as the 200 MB of complementary data.

In the end, all you have to pay is $67.60 (upfront) for the tax of the device as well as the $10 sim starter kit. When you receive the iPad, you will activate your data account on the cellular management tool directly in the settings and you will be eligible to receive the 200 MB of free data for life with the option to add supplementary data as you go.

Initially, you will be "charged" $10 per month for the on-demand service, but once you activate the 200mb complementary data on the iPad (as stated before) that charge will no longer appear on your monthly bill. All you will end up paying is the $26.25 fee plus the regulatory tax for the device every month.

The process was long on the phone, but it was well worth it since every single angle was covered in terms of information. Plus, you do not get charged the $35 activation fee like you would in the brick-and-mortar stores.

The only downside to ordering on the phone is having to wait for the iPad to ship to you, but I feel like this is such a small concession to guarantee the awesome benefits of T-Mobile's new tablet data plan!

Thank you, just called and ordered 16 gig space grey on installment, unfortunately on backorder.

$48.40 paid now (38.40tax + 10sim charge)
$26.25/mo plus potentially some kind of undisclosed tax, we shall see

On demand data charge of $10 / mo is currently showing on my order, but I am told that with activation the account will recognize the sim is in a tablet and the plan can be set to $0 200mb.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and and chose to proceed.

are you financing or paying in full?

I got the $26.45 a month plan. The payments don't even start until January. Pretty sweet deal. :)

It's not throttled unless you go over 200MB

Here is an email I sent to the CEO of tmobile describing my experience at the store today:

Hi,

I went into a T-Mobile store near my home in San Diego today (the Carmel Mountain 92127 store) and tried to purchase the new iPad air, with the free 200mb/month plan.

The rep I spoke to (Alexander) said they do not have the free 200mb plan. He said "You have to buy a 2.5 gb plan, then you get 200mb for free". So he was trying to charge me $20 a month for data, when it should be free.

At this point, I'm really frustrated. I thought it was going to be easy and cheap to switch from AT&T to tmobile for my ipad needs, but I'm really confused right now.

Can you please tell me, is the 200mb/month plan free? I don't have a tmobile account, and I just want to buy the iPad Air on the installment plan, with the free 200mb data. But the rep said it doesn't exist...

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me understand this. Thanks!

Ryan Burgess

The rep either didn't know what he was doing or was trying to screw me over so he could get more commission. I wish this wasn't so confusing!

Just go ahead and buy it in the store and call customer service. They will straighten it all out for you.

According to John Legere twitter if you financed and have no other service with them you will be charged $10mo.

My only problem with that is that it sounds like an "exception", despite Legere saying "No exceptions." in his earlier tweet.

Wrong. You get absolutely no connection after 200 unless you purchase additional data. Tmobile can't afford to screw customers like Verizon and ATT. Bought an Air from tmobile yesterday. I swear this forum is full of verizon and AT&T employees spreading incorrect info. Free 200mb for everyone...new and existing customers. The f&cking CEO said it. Google "tmobile" and "iPad." Read!?! Why are people arguing you have to pay $10? They screwed up and are correcting it.

WRONG! No activation fee in store. Bought mine yesterday. Why would they charge you in store? That's where they can sell you more data and accessories.

Actually, you are throttled down to 2G speeds after 200MB, which is pretty much no connection. Also, I can confirm there is no activation fee. I just came home from T-Mobile with mine.

Ok I have been to 2 t-mobile sites as well as tweeted John, the CEO for answers.

I believed I would only pay the $26/month for 24 months and it included 200/mb data.

This is only good for t-mobile customers who have pre-paid monthly plans. Customers who are post-monthly or non-tmobile customers are charged $10 a month for a financial service fee which is also called a connection fee to their services.

Serious false advertisement on T-Mobiles part and their CEO. "Free 200mb for even non-customers no strings" doesn't exist. It costs $10.

especially since they boldly advertise the zero down

they can call it a financial service fee, but its called an on demand fee on my paperwork and I didn't have to sign something that said I had to pay $10 to finance.

My only problem with that is that it sounds like an "exception", despite Legere saying "No exceptions." in his earlier tweet.

For all those that are being told outlandish things such as you HAVE to buy the 2.5GB plan in order to do the financing or anything similar that seems to contradict the CEO's statements, what type of store are you hearing this from? Are these corporate owned stores, or 3rd party dealer stores? Many times it's very hard to tell the difference, but dealer stores are notorious for flat out lying to customers in order to pad their numbers, such as "you can't buy this phone with X number of dollars in accessories", or "you can't buy this phone device without X amount of data". I even had a customer during my days as a sales rep at an AT&T corporate store who was forced to add 2 more lines to their account just in order to move to a rate plan with more calling minutes.

There are many good dealers out there, but there are also many who will lie, cheat and steal to make their numbers. And the owners of those dealerships are usually the ones pushing such practices. So I ONLY deal with corporate owned stores. I did with AT&T and I do now with T-Mobile. I don't know about other parts of the U.S., but here in the Southeast, if the store is a really small store or it's inside a mall, chances are it's probably an independent dealer.

Hope this helps some. Don't be afraid to ask if they are a corporate owned store or not.

I went into a corporate store last night and called T-Mobile CS today and was told by both that if you finance the iPad Air, you cannot get the free data, you have to have some minimum plan through them (they signed me up for a $20/month 500 MB plan). I'm bringing mine back to the store tonight and will be ordering an iPad Mini w/ Retina through AT&T (my current carrier) on their NEXT plan ($26/month for only 20 months). I will have to pay $10/month for their minimum data plan (since I'm currently grandfathered on an unlimited data plan for my 5S and do not want to lose that and move to a mobile share). But, this will still be cheaper than T-Mobile's monthly payments. Bummer.

Not just $10, $10/month for 24 months. That's a lot of money!

I just ordered on the phone financed and was told by cs and sales that I will be able to use the 200mb free plan. Currently $10 On demand data charge is showing on my order for monthly billing but I was told that it can be changed when I receive the device and the $10 will be credited. We shall see

They all come with different SIM cards peri stalled so its important to get the right version. Because most carries would charge 20-30 for the sim alone. That is unless you get that nice rep that waves that fee.

paying for a simcard? jeeze they rly squeeze every little dime out of their customers over there

I just went by T-Mobile an hour ago and they told me the 10 dollar charge shows up but will get credited back, so technically it is 0. I'm a new T-Mobile customer and am waiting for my Air to arrive through the mail since I ordered it online.

did you get it on the payment plan?

saw your tweet, did you email him?

No, you can't. The above poster is wrong. The Verizon iPad 2 does not have a SIM card you can remove, so you're pretty much stuck. Even if it did, I'm not sure the cellular hardware would be capable of working on T-Mobile anyway.

The reason people are making such a big deal about whether it's possible to switch carriers on the iPad Air is because, unlike previous models, there is only one cellular model (ignoring color and capacity) across all carriers, whereas before there were separate ones for CDMA and GSM carriers (presumably because the hardware for both couldn't fit inside, but this is apparently possible now).

That's what I thought but wasn't sure. What about an iPad 4 from Verizon?

So John L says there are no strings attached but the CS rep told me otherwise today. See chat log.

No TMo iPad for me today

Went into the TMobile thinking of using their payment plan to get an iPad Air and some free data so I could save my $10/mo on ATT.

Had a long talk with a manager who had been dealing with this mess all day. He assured me his information was correct and is as follows:

You cannot get the free data if you pay on the installment plan. Period. You have to be signed up as a customer with a data plan ($30/mo) or a voice line to get the payment plan. Was told it had nothing to do with credit (wouldn't run mine even.)

If you bring your own iPad, or want to buy it outright in the store you are good.

Off I went to ATT and used their Next plan to get it on a monthly plan, and they nicely credited me the $100 rebate for new lines even though I used the Next plan.

Sorry TMo, almost had me and maybe my four other iPhones too, but you dropped the ball here.

So...does anyone know how to actually purchase the iPad with the free data from T-Mobile's web site?

as many have noticed, the tmobile reps at the stores are the LEAST knowledgeable about this free 200mb free data info. they know about as much as the next person and are told nothing, from what i gather. they have to find things out via the web as we do...

in the end, though, i think it's a win/win for tmobile. if the adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity is true, lots of people are talking about tmobile and that has to be a good thing for them...i suppose everything will get worked out and they'll add a ton of people to their network. let's see how it holds up.

fwiw, i picked up a new nexus 7 on tmobile just for the free data...and also got a sim for my ipad third gen...

I need to stay where I am. I get 500MB/day, 200 minutes of call anywhere in the country/month and unlimited texts for £16.99 ($27) a month. I don't understand how my small local provider can do that and massive US corps can't. Consumers need to find a way of changing the game so that these companies don't take liberties.

Correct me if I'm wrong but most likely you are tied to a small area or will be hit with roaming charges. Guaranteed that you are piggy backing off one of the major networks which means you're an after thought if the network is bogged down. The big companies sell access to fill up their networks but won't hesitate to knock you off for one of their actual customers. Also, you get 500mb/day? So, you get 15gb/mo? I think you meant 500mb/mo. It's hard to surpass 500mb when you're getting the slower speeds that you're more likely than not receiving, too.

All this for 200 mbs of data. If sprint was smart, they would announce a free 1 GB no strings attached

I'd love to see AT&T follow suit. I'm already a customer, and if they could give me a few hundred megs of free data without making me sacrifice my unlimited iPhone data, I'd be hooked.

Only in my dreams...
