Both phones will be compatible with Palm's new mobile hotspot application, which allows users to set up mobile Wi-Fi networks using Verizon's 3G data services. Engadget and Gizmodo have both offered hands-on impressions of the new devices.

Wait a minute, does this mean i can use my Touch with it????

This could be wayyyyy cheaper than going with a MIFI for me. Must go read more!!!

Erm, excuse me but tablets have been around for YEARS. You're criticizing your own sacred company. Blasphemy!

It's not that - these companies haven't really bothered with the 'Slate' idea before now.

Yes they have created PDA's and what not - so have Apple.

The hype around the Apple Tablet is massive so what do we have - HP, Dell - all the PC companies that, on the whole, produce shoddy hardware (aside Dell's monitors) creating cheap rip-off products so they can get it on the market first or try to tear some $$$ out of the consumer.

Its happening all the time.

If it isn't a patent war, it's a release date war.

Crippled Phone Already......

....since it is on Verizon's Network (no concurrent voice/data). What good is that shared Wifi feature (local hotspot) if I can't make/take a call at the same time?

Does Sprint offer concurrent voice/data for their version of the PRE?

The Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus: you know what the "Plus" means?

"Plus" cool new features to keep you distracted from the fact that we lost badly when we went toe-to-toe with Apple and you won't be able to sync your phone with iTunes. That's what the "Plus" part means ;)

5" Slate?!? What kind of size it that!?! Honey I shrunk the netbook!

Like the "S" in 3GS meaning, we, erm, updated just enough, that you would buy more!

My prediction for the Jan event:

Steve shows off all the new iTunes media stuff. "One more thing... This is the new iSlate/iPad/etc. It will be released later this year. Thank you all for coming...."

A few seconds later SJ returns...

"Who do you think we are? Dell? Microsoft? HP?"

Minds blown away...

Nice updates on the Palms

I like the updates to the Palm products and it's nice to see they're getting their app store up and running. I actually felt a little let down that the Pre hadn't lived up to the promise that it seemed to offer. It was the most exciting phone since the iPhone (up until just the last few days, where the Android phones really started coming into their own). The UI is certainly one of the nicer ones.

As for the Dell... I'm sure it'll be a decent product, but at 5 inches, is that really a "slate"? Seems more like a competitor with the iPod Touch and the Zune HD. Not a judgement on the device; only its classification.

So Palm has done a good ob of trying to catch up with the iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple is still ahead in my estimation and are no doubt hard at work on the next iPhone iteration. Guess they will stay ahead for now.

Ah, but what does "being ahead" mean? Selling more? Bigger screen?

My daughter's family loves their Pre and Pixi, and having a Sprint everything plan for much cheaper than being on ATT or Verizon. If Sprint had better coverage where I live, I'd probably do the same.

Even better, they've been using Palm's Ares web based SDK to play with creating their own simple personal apps, which are then compiled and cross loaded to their phones. No other platform is as easy.

To them, Palm and Sprint are the ones who are ahead.

Cheers!

ZZzzzz . . .

Good job Palm. Great timing after you all but killed your Pre platform.

As usual, Dell is just pathetic.

i'm happy about any new, potentially popular device that doesn't run windows.

i'm more about getting rid of windows than propping up apple, even though i love apple.

Being ahead:

- Profit
- Marketshare
- Feature-set

In that order.

Does the Dell need more "good bit of new sexy" to succeed?

As a consumer, for me personally, its about feature set. I don't really care what you and your neighbor are using, I care about what I'm using. The Pre is actually a great little phone. I bought one because I prefer a hardware keyboard and Sprints a better deal for me...I also think Sprint's data connections are more reliable and generally faster IME. I'm aso glad Palm is continue to improve a device I liked from day one without charging me any money to upgrade the OS.

I like the iPhone, and I'm an Apple guy, but the Palm fits my needs better. For me, that makes it better than the iPhone.

I don't really see anything that interested me greatly but I still can't wait to play around with some of this stuff in person when I can.

The Pre looks nice! I'm with Verizon, and was thinking about getting the google phone in a few months, but now I've been given another option! oh the choices, lol, looking forward to my birthday!

Who charges for OS upgrades to phones? I don't know much about other phones, but has anyone ever even offered a major phone OS upgrade prior to Apple? And Apple certainly doesn't charge money for the iPhone OS upgrade.

Anyone going to introduce a tablet that supports 4G? I want to move away from the cell phone model and to the WiMax model.
