Are you an Apple employee/stock holder? Otherwise, I find this obsession with pointing out Apple's profit to be rather grotesque on these forums...

You tell 'em.
Not like we live in a culture where profitability is what matters or anything.
And to put out creative products WHILE making a profit? Posh.
SO bourgeois.

I don't really see anything that interested me greatly but I still can't wait to play around with some of this stuff in person when I can.

Yeah, the CES stuff looks like more excess and toys to play with. I am happy with my Android phone because it meant losing the laptop on a day to day basis. Outside of that, I am really just looking to replace my handset once a better camera/mobile os handset comes along. I will likely wait for Sony Ericsson to work something out later this year. I miss my K800i, the photos were stellar, and I like to document.

Does the Dell need more "good bit of new sexy" to succeed?

:D Touche!

No but if it had an Apple Logo LTD has said numerous times he'd love it. Throw an Apple Logo on it and to him its perfection.

You see, what the market has decided is that's its NOT about feature set, but about usability.

Outside of pedantics, is that different? Unusable features are useless. It is interesting to see Apple fans use marketshare to their advantage after criticizing microsoft for it for so long...

As a consumer, for me personally, its about feature set. I don't really care what you and your neighbor are using, I care about what I'm using. The Pre is actually a great little phone. I bought one because I prefer a hardware keyboard and Sprints a better deal for me...I also think Sprint's data connections are more reliable and generally faster IME. I'm aso glad Palm is continue to improve a device I liked from day one without charging me any money to upgrade the OS.

I like the iPhone, and I'm an Apple guy, but the Palm fits my needs better. For me, that makes it better than the iPhone.

Your uniqueness doesn't interest companies.

CES offers plenty of toys and not enough time or money.

I'll stick with replacing my computer desk and getting a new monitor or a TV for now. ;)

Wow, you guys really are crazy fanboys, I guess thats why I limit myself to the main page and stay off the forums.

Remember a time when Apple found unique feature set combinations and changed the marketplace? Thats what companies do to succeed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Apple's had its share of failed products...you should be glad Apple doesn't (hopefully) share your arrogance. They will need to continue to innovate to maintain marketshare...

Actually, I find it kind of funny that you automatically assume I was talking about Apple profit.

I was, in fact, pointing out Apple's market-share -- a relatively minor player compared to giants like Microsoft and Dell.

Seems to me that you are the one preoccupied with Apple's profit, since that's the topic you jump to.

But yes, if you must bring up that subject, Apple clearly knows how to make a profit, and I'm certain they don't give a !@$# about your opinion regarding their business practices. I know someone who made $1500 off Apple stock THIS MONTH, and I'm sure they don't care either.

Anyone going to introduce a tablet that supports 4G? I want to move away from the cell phone model and to the WiMax model.
WiMax is still a "cell phone model" as you put it.
It's called mobile broadband. ;)
WiMax will be relegated to Sprint and MVO's.

LTE is the future of mobile broadband. Verizon and AT&T are both moving there and T-Mobile will not be too far behind.

No, it's not.

Companies make profit to succeed.

The fact that the iPhone is relatively behind on features is evidence of the fact that profit rules all.

You are an ignorant idealist, and you are still assuming that I'm taking Apple's side on this.

I love my iPhone, but I really wish Apple would get off their high-horse and give it some of the basic features other phones have.

But Apple doesn't care, because they are making money.

And mark my words -- Apple will fall, or Apple will fall from grace. Guaranteed.

[Edit] Just to re-iterate, I'm a Mac user, I'm an iPhone user -- and I definitely think there is room for improvement. I just think part of Apple's strategy (right now) is sticking to things they are confident in, rather than taking risks.. and that's why their progress is starting to fall behind. Their BRAND POWER is keeping their profits high.

Does the Dell need more "good bit of new sexy" to succeed?

It needs to not be Dell's usual crap. In other words, it needs to be done by someone else.

You mean like the last time they released a major new product... you mean like the iPhone? Yea I remember that...

These companies need to realize that they're not gonna beat Apple until they start spending more time on each product. Palm copies and Dell focuses on too many things at one time. If Apple does come out with a tablet it will be much more polished and perfected than anything that has been put together for the sake of beating Apple to it's own game.

The hype around the Apple Tablet is massive so what do we have - HP, Dell - all the PC companies that, on the whole, produce shoddy hardware (aside Dell's monitors) creating cheap rip-off products so they can get it on the market first or try to tear some $$$ out of the consumer.

Computers such as these take a lot more time to develop than you think. Apple, Dell, etc...all have access to the same marketing data that shows the popularity of the Kindle and the potential for big market in slate like devices.

To say that they all heard a rumor about an Apple tablet so quickly tossed one together for CES is letting the RDF take too much control over you.

I like how on the tablet datasheet it has bulletpoints that say "Best in class technology" followed by "First to market". Um, how is your technology best in class if you are the first one? Or if you really think you are the first, I guess how could you not have the best in class technology?

Everyone scrambling to beat Apple (for a device that may or may not even appear) by cramming whatever they can into a flat screen, it's funny to watch it.

This is true.. especially if Apple nixed the tablet twice, like the rumors say.

Apple revolutionized with the iPhone, but they've been following in its footsteps ever since. But I'm ok with that -- because they use their profits from the iPhone to engineer great computers.

I just wish I could get an unobtrusive way to respond to text messages while playing games on my iPhone.

That's your opinion, not a statement of fact.
There are plenty of people who don't like OS X, iPods or the iPhone.

And the vast majority of the people who don't like OS X have never owned a Mac.

"Go ahead, tell me about that university mac you used, that was poorly maintained and running 10.3; I'll tell you how your opinion about macs is completely irrelevant. Or better yet, tell me you've never used a mac at all, and you just 'don't like them'."

Aah, so it needs a good bit of new manufacturer. I get it now..

Apple?

Ignorant idealist? Easy hotshot...

I agree with what your saying, not sure why you're so hostile...

YEAR OF THE SLATES!

That Dell device is SEXY!

Zzzzz...

Ah, but what does "being ahead" mean? Selling more? Bigger screen?

Simple. Platform/ecosystem.

My daughter's family loves their Pre and Pixi, and having a Sprint everything plan for much cheaper than being on ATT or Verizon. If Sprint had better coverage where I live, I'd probably do the same.

Agreed, Sprint is the bargain of the bunch. I guess that's the benefit of going with the carrier that's desperate for subscribers. (I wish AT&T were desperate for subscribers. :( )

Even better, they've been using Palm's Ares web based SDK to play with creating their own simple personal apps, which are then compiled and cross loaded to their phones. No other platform is as easy.

Oh come on. It's a neat parlor trick, but come on, it's no substitute for the availability of real, robust apps. Which may be coming to Palm, if they can get any developer interest. Which may be a challenge at this point.
