yesterday, I passed my iPod touch 6 gen on to a family member, so I erased and untied it from my Apple ID, then set it up with the Apple ID of the family member

now, the funny thing is that the standard notification emails from Apple following the set up identify the 6 gen iPod touch as a 7 gen, repeatedly stating:

"your Apple ID has been used to sign in to iCloud from an iPod Touch (7th generation)"

the same identification is made in the second notification email from Apple regarding iMessage and facetime

That's been happening for long enough I don't think there's any hidden meaning to be found.

Oh well, who knows. Maybe Apple will surprise us again, just like they did when updating the discontinued AirPort Express to support AirPlay 2.
I mean, even the current 6th gen iPod touch came as a surprise back in 2015.

Every year I hope for a new iPod touch. An iPod touch 7th generation with a battery that doesn't drain so quickly and holds 256gb would be perfect. Guess we'll just have to see tomorrow. Apple could surprise us.

Funny how Apple has stopped selling the SE but still sells the IPT6 at the same expensive price when it was released.
I find it super weird that Apple has now eliminated all A9 devices from their lineup, but is still selling a couple A8 devices. Wonder if that's a sign that an update to the iPod Touch is coming after all?

Also this is the only iOS device that has a headphone jack. Looking at the iPhone line up, a new iPod Touch could mean no headphone jack. #courage

yes, perhaps, guess there's also hope for the SE owners maybe next year.

The iPads still have headphone jacks as well.

Doubt it, if they were planning an update to the SE, they would have just kept selling the current SE as is until its replacement is ready. The fact that they eliminated it means that line is probably done and Apple is leaving 4" iPhone fans behind.

I feel like Apple may have gotten rid of the A9 devices ASAP due to the throttling issue, a replacement for the SE could still be one the way. Doing it now is easier (and more low key) than earlier in the year mid cycle. Notice neither the iPod touch or iPad mini are affected by throttling. The 7s are but it has less impact on the A10.

The iPhone 7 doesn't quite reach the price point or size the SE did so potentially there's still an opening. Of course this is all just pure speculation.

I’m not sure at this point, having gone past 3 years with nothing would suggest it’s on the way out - but then so has the mini and it’s supposed to be getting a refresh. The fact it’s lingering rather than being given the boot also suggests there is still a place for it. The issue I see is that it’s potentially not as simple as just redesigning the logic board around a new chip like they did with the 6th gen - if they’re serious about moving iOS to the iPhone X paradigm then it’s going to need a ground up redesign. With the “7th generation” messages this might be a hangover from the fact that there was a cancelled model between the 5th and 6th generations that would have been the 6th, so from a code POV this might still be labelled as the 7th gen...

Well, I was wrong, I thought the SE would still be sold as is for 6 more months, then we'd get a new small form factor iPhone (next Spring), but, it is while supplies last as of yesterday.

iPhone SE dropped out of lineup, I think price point is a bigger factor than anything, and the need to drop a form factor:

With the iPhone 7 price drop to $449 (starting price), (and Apple certified refurbished starting at $379), they couldn't justify $399 for iPhone SE when you could get a much more robust iPhone for only $50 more, they obviously didn't want to drop the entry price for iPhone below $399, though they could have dropped it to $349 and kept it, but, that brings in other factors such as having too many form factors in the lineup as well.

Perhaps next year when they drop iPhone 7 they will add a smaller form factor of the X?

So, this event was only Watch/iPhone, so, we may get another event for iPads (& Macs?) before year end? At that point, when they update the iPad lineup, they may very well discontinue the iPod Touch. In any case, iPod Touch will not be around a year from now.
[doublepost=1536844338][/doublepost]A8 / A9

I don't know about this, I don't think it's about the A9 necessarily.

current A8 products:

iPod Touch
iPad Mini 4
Apple TV (4th Gen.)
Home Pod

current A9 products:

...hmmm, none!

maybe you're right Paddle1

This is not happening, iPod is EOL.

The Mac Mini is getting updated, probably a whole new form factor.

The iPad Mini is -unknown-

but, as much as I would love an update, probably not. Why? Price Point may be a factor, producing the form factor in appropriate quantities to keep the price point reasonable might not be feasible, unless they go Pro and then it will cost more than the entry level iPad 9.7". On the other hand I'd hate for them to dumb it down like they did the entry level 9.7" iPad, with a full glare screen instead of laminated anti-glare screen...that laminated screen on the iPad Mini 4 is amazing.

A new iPad Mini Pro? barely a maybe.

A refreshed iPad Mini? not likely at this point, unfortunately.
[doublepost=1536845532][/doublepost]"Available At Authorized Resellers"

{I hate how macrumors automatically merges posts :p}

One more thing...

While Apple is not selling the following devices, something new, you can still compare some models against the current iPhones, they are listed on their website as "Available At Authorized Resellers":

iPhone 6s/6s+
iPhone 6/6+
iPhone SE

Is this the "cheaper" entry level iPhone? Older models still available, but, only at other resellers, not Apple?

So, question is: are they still making them, or do they just have an abundance of supply and they are only giving them out to other resellers?

FYI:
>iPhone SE 32GB is still selling for $139 (new) at Best Buy...

...these are Total Wireless or Simple Mobile pre-paid type iPhones, so, if you want to use it as iPod Touch, no problem, but, if you want to later use it as an iPhone, it will be locked to that provider for 12 months (edit).

I actually think it's more like the A8 is lingering on because it is cheap to produce and gives good enough performance in several products. It's kind of the same thing that happened with the A5 a few years back.

Also, the throttling has more to do with the smaller batteries in the 6s and SE than the A9 itself.

From that point of view then an IPT 7 release would be imminent....and i doubt that too. Only Apple knows Apple at the end.
