Just learned my niece wants a new iPod touch. She has a 5th gen, but she doesn't like it because she can't install iOS 11. Not even sure if iOS 10 is on it.

I see the 6th gen is almost 3 years old. Really not liking her buying such old tech, but is Apple ever going to release a new one? It will be a bummer if they release a new one just after she buys this one.
5th gen is only iOS 9;
people say the 6th gen gets horrible battery life because of the A8 chip, but others say if you turn off wi-fi & look after rour settings, you get the same batt. life as the gen5...
(I have the g5, which is fine, but not being on iOS 10 or 11+ is an annoyance because apps get changed & there can be minor crashes;
I'm waiting for the gen7, or a cheap gen6 if possible)

My niece had $200 to spend on a touch. That meant a 32GB. I found Apple had refurb 128GB for $250. I told her if she gave me the $200, I'd pay for the rest. So, I've got a 128GB 6th gen being delivered Friday. She wanted gold, but they only had silver. She said for 128GB, she could live with silver. :)
(& yeah, 32GB is nothing nowadays, get as much as you can)

I got the silver 128GB delivered, but I've kept checking Apple.com for a gold 128GB refurb. Their stock appears to change at least daily. Well, they had gold ones for sale, so I ordered one last night. I'll have to return the silver one I already received. My niece will be quite pleased. :D

The sole reason I sold my iPod Touch 6th gen. was its woeful battery life. Now I've moved on to phones completely but I do miss the svelteness of the device - nothing quite like it.

Can someone expand on this? One MR user told me that for my IpT5, you may as well just leave the wifi on all the time, as the way the wifi is implemented on there, it doesn't use up that much more power (vs. how it technically works on other devices like Android phones and laptops?).

That said, ever since I switched to my Ipad Air for Plants Vs. Zombies 2 (since I haven't bothered to update the Ipad Air from ios8, and IpT5 from ios7), I've had no reason to go online on my IpT5, so I've turned off wifi, and left it like that for over a year now. My Ipad Air goes online every now and then, my phone is my "go to" device for internet on the road, while my Chromebook is the ideal way to surf the internet away from my desktop.

What do you guys think the chances are that apple will update the iPod? Based on the Buyer's Guide it seems way overdue for some something. I'd think a new CPU, 2GB of RAM, and Touch ID would be the hat trick for it, but I doubt it gets Touch ID. I was going to keep a SE to use as a wifi device because I can't use a SE as my daily driver. The SE can't be used as my DD because I need hot spot and I won't jailbreak it to get it. I know I can move the SIM from my Android phone back to the SE but that's a PITA. The Touch is slim enough where I wouldn't care about the carrying it around in addition to my hot spot enabled android phone. In the end....first world problems.

EDIT: Part of my post didn't make sense....sorry...
There is a 0% chance. This is gonna be discontinued very soon I think

With so many younger kids getting phones there isn't much use for an iPod Touch anymore, and the rest of the iPods are discontinued let's add the iPod Touch to the graveyard.

I have an iPod 5th gen, but dunno if I should get a couple iPod 6th gens for the future, with the 6's shorter battery life.

Plus, my iPod is iOS 9, which is fine, but questionable for the future, you know?

The iCloud showing as 7th gen must be some me kind of bug, I would be extremely surprised if Apple updates iPod touch. The 6th gen is EOL. There may be one more price drop, and they might continue to make them, as long as they make A8 processors, but, don't be looking for an update.

The A8 will update to iOS 12, and maybe 13, so, that's something, take that.

iPhone SE will likely drop in price another $50 at some point.

Who would pay $300 for a premium iPod touch? Or at least I’d like to say I would

I want one with a better screen, Touch ID 2, iPhone 8 camera, A10 at least, 2GB of RAM

I also just wish it was a little thicker to have better battery life

Obviously the things I said above is what everyone in this thread is hoping for

My IPT5 has just died and the battery life on my IPT6 is so lame that i'm not planning to buy an expensive second IPT6.

Perhaps and IPT 7 will be released this fall but i really doubt it this time.

What happened to your iPod Touch 5G?

What happened to your iPod Touch 5G?

Well the screen took off by itself and the home button fell, i could have tried to stick glue on it but meeh the device was already old i bought it whe it was orginally released in 2012.

Currently I was using it as an apple music streaming device connected directly to my onkyo device via USB (the battery doesn't last anymore), i used it this way like 3 years, of course i miss it but nothing last forever...

Having said that my ipod touch 6 is not in "good contidition" either, battery life has NEVER been good and and now with latest ios version the device overheats when charging from time to time, i have to charge it every single day.

Apple needs to put more love on these devices, personally i believe the 6 was the last of its kind, still extremely expensive, slow and faulty, no way i'll be buying a second one.

It’s not going to be updated most of the market for it is taken up by used iPhones. While I’m sure Apple would love the money from selling a new device to those people it isn’t a large enough market to be worth their R&D costs.

The battery must have expanded and destroyed the homebutton / screen. Since you've said it did not last anymore this is very likely to have happened.
As for the 6th gen, it has indeed very short battery life due to the power hungry A8 chip and the small battery size (due to the iPod being so thin)

If that’s the case then why wasn’t the iPod Touch discontinued when the Nano and the Shuffle were discontinued. If Apple wants customers to buy iPhones in place of the iPod Touch, new or used, then it would have made more business sence to discontinue the iPod Touch with the other models. Not doing so suggests to me that Apple still sees a market for the iPod Touch or something similar. Possibly a device to replace both the iPad Mini and the iPod Touch as others have suggested.

Apple didn't discontinue shuffle and nano because they didn't sell anymore, but because they could not continue manufacturing them it seems, same reason as with the classic some years before.

If Apple isn't going to upgrade the iPod touch once more, they'll probably continue to sell it until either a similar issue with parts suppliers arises or discontinuation of iOS support is imminent.

I suspect the real reason Apple discontinued the iPod shuffle and nano is because they weren't compatible with Apple Music and they chose not to continue to sell a product that didn't fit with the direction they were taking with selling services. The iPod Touch does work with Apple Music so the decision on whether to update or discontinue it will be based on it's sales/sales potential.

My Touch 6 with latest iOS has fantastic battery life now, since I sent it in for "battery replacement."

They didn't actually replace the battery on my old one, they just sent me a refurbished.
[doublepost=1534997555][/doublepost]Also I'd give a LOT of $$$ if I could stick a SIM card in this sucker and call it an iPhone.

The SE is a pig compared to the svelte Touch.

You can buy a brand new iPhone SE 32 GB at Best Buy for $130-$140, take out the SIM and it's an iPod touch. (This has the A9 chip instead of A8).

...the catch is, if you want to use it as a phone, it is carrier locked for 3-12 months depending on which one you get. But, if you're only going to use it as iPod touch, this doesn't matter.
