See.. dots make it easier to just get the signal strength. Without worrying about the value it self. Easy representation. Why make things more difficult.."What does x.xdb mean again? is it good or bad??"

Where the dots / bars show very clearly the quality of signal.
The dots hide informations. With a signal strength of -105 dBm I can make a call and still receive data from the network. With -115 dBm I can barely receive a text. In both cases I have "one dot", but it's a whole different thing.

----------

You're assuming everyone can read them. Dots help - because everyone knows the more dots coloured - the better. Easy to read. I wasn't denying that the number is not useful. Its far more useful than bars / dots - but not to average Joe who doesn't know what they mean.

Sure, but I'm not "average Joe" so I do prefer numbers :D

A dumb design to begin with. Signal bars were just fine and more accurate and used less space.

Weird. Seems like some apps force dots over the number.

Just press the dots and you'll get the numbers. Although if there's a button in that corner, you might need to go to another screen (in the same app) to be able to press the dots...

After using it for a dayI have turned it off. It is being too intermitent to be of any use to me. The home screen wont change from numbers to dots. And it changes back to what it was in each window rather than staying to what I set.

This was meant to be an option to check the signal strength but the dots still the default. Shame.

I just do it to save space man... As if "Vodafone" wasn't long enough they add IN here in India as if we don't know it's Vodafone India... Lol...

Something wrong with your phone, because on mine numbers stay until I press them.

My cellular iPad only shows numbers. Obviously I don't have a phone app to use to get to Field Test Mode, so any ideas on how to change it back to dots? Thanks.

You're not doing it correctly then... I've been using it a long time... It's extremely stable for me... And even if it doesn't work correctly there's nothing to shame it... It's no like it's an official app... This is a bug being used for our advantage...

Some people think they are entitled to every ****ing little thing... What a shame...

Enter the field test code in the dialed again... Then just press the home button...

Did I say people shouldnt use it or that its a terrible feature and how everythings Apples fault .... No, so get a grip.

Theres nothing wrong with my phone and I am doing nothing wrong. I just found it after a days use to be overly fiddly.

My view, I am entitled to it so deal and move on.

Are you serious ? How you activated Field Test Mode on an iPad without a phone app ?!?

No dude, you said it was being too intermittent and home screen won't change dots to numbers. That is not correct because it's not intermittent at all and my home screen is showing numbers.
You did something wrong.

Im not sure what it is about this place that make people be antagonistic and aggressive.

The home screen stopped changing numbers to dots after a while but would if I went from one window to another and back. Also going between windows it could be dots or numbers there was no unity.

It is nothing I did it's just the way it is, and instead of discussing like an adult the practicality of the function you instead replied the way you did and it's a shame.

Anyway I'm done in this thread. People cant share opinions or experience as your not willing to engage in meaningful discussion.

I wasn't aggressive at all.
I just stated that should be something wrong with your unit or what you did, because I'm using field test mode since two years and numbers NEVER switch to dots/bars by themselves ... NEVER.
I can do whatever you want and my phone still shows numbers. The only way to have dots showed is to revert the procedure OR to tap on the numbers (but when you turn the phone off and on numbers will show up again).

Ps: just checked, tap on the numbers doesn't work anymore on iOS 7.

Really?

I checked again: this works only in the Setting pages ....
In the home or lock screen it doesn't work.

...for you. For me, it works on the home screen, lock screen, safari, Facebook... Everywhere. I can tap and switch all I want.

You are correct... It works everywhere for me except the home page, lock screen and in apps where there is a button on the top left corner, like messages, etc. Everywhere else you can switch, these apps it stays as numbers...

I could replicate it too...

You are correct.
The issue seems to be related to the presence of a button ... In Hangout I can switch between dots and numbers, in iMessage I can't ....
