less expensive would be more descriptive rather than cheaper. just saying... $1000 isn't cheap, but it is relatively less expensive than the alternative. to me cheaper would be $495, which would imply a less costly manufactured product.

I was getting excited about the rumours of this new display but then realized that it will likely be a glossy.

And a good miracle.

Yeah, I don't see any situation where it'll be a grand. This is Apple - I'm thinking maybe $1500, and if this thing has some sort of A-class chip to enable a smarter feature set, it wouldn't surprise me to see the price at $1999.

I guess we'll find out soon!

As a programmer I'd rather buy 2 of them and run one of them in portrait. Wide doesn't help programmers.
Different strokes for different folks: It can be arguably just as beneficial for a variety of programming use cases to use an ultra-wide arrangement using one or two monitors. VESA mounts are great to not have to care either way, using portrait for the edge case of very long files with the exception of true ultra-wides.

This is especially the case for creative engineers or full-stack developers with multiple consoles.

Surely there's a difference between rumours and "crap I made up for my YouTube channel" though?

And how do you figure this is "crap he just made up"? Luke is clearly referring to an inside source, who gave him the info the renders are based on.

Either way, you have no basis to complain about this - the event is less than 24 hours away, we will find out either way.

So basically the renders were nearly completely accurate, except for those front facing ports.

I am sure rhysmorgan will be apologizing for this "crap he made up" comments any time now ;)

Yeah I expect that Luke was only given the dimensions and the grid on the bottom, not the port configuration which is why he did not render the back or the front ports.

Very interesting rumors to say the least.

A couple of months ago I wrote about how Apple really needs to re-think the iMac as a concept. Here we are!

Assuming this is true, Apple have chosen to prioritize a new 27" standalone 5K display and headless "Mac Studio" over the long overdue iMac 27". This really speaks numbers. The 24" iMac is clearly not selling.

Why Apple couldn't foresee this is beyond me. The desktop used to offer so many advantages over laptops. Performance, Display Size, Storage Space, Connectivity, and so on. Today's iMac add none of that except display size. I get the exact same performance in a MacBook Air that I can bring anywhere, at which point it makes more sense to just get a separate display.

Speaking of laptops, most employees already have a company issued laptop and with working from home being a thing, people need a large screen to work on. Since Apple were crazy enough not to add Target Display functionality to the iMac, it now means that the iMac is competing with (often prioritized) work setups over expensive living space.

I would have loved to see Apple expand the functionality of the iMac to make it appealing once again. A "Surface Studio" type of device would have appealed to the creatives and content creators. An iMac serving as a "home hub" would have appealed to families all over the world. I even remember an Apple patent years back that allowed you to dock your MacBook by just sliding it into the display.

On the other hand, rumors can oftentimes get the basics right - e.g. form factors and sizing from leaked schematics, but completely misinterpret the device. We've seen it so many times. Now what if this is indeed a new iMac 27"? What if it's called iMac Studio? From the video it appears they only managed to confirm the name of the headless Mac Studio. The "Studio Display" name was just a rumor.

Looking forward to tomorrows event! :)

Fast forward to today and Apple have discontinued the iMac 27”.

Well, my Pro Display XDR arrived exactly two weeks and 1 day ago. :D Didn't see that coming. At least not that fast. And that cheap.
I feel a bit scammed, the nano texture option and the stand is unproportional cheaper on the Studio model.

So looks like the Apple Studio Display has an updated LG 5K panel compared to the LG UltraFine and the iMac 5K as it can display HDR in YouTube thanks to the 600 nits and offers better overall image quality in terms of contrast and such.

I waited years for a better option from Apple or a reasonably priced 5K monitor from LG. I recently gave up and bought the $400 LG 27UP650-W.

I wonder how do you connect it?

I just got LG 27UP650 and I can't get it to work with Mac Studio when I use HDMI cable: the monitor is just flickering.

I read somewhere that I need DP to USB-C cable... is that what you're using?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info.

In the end, only USB-C to DP adapter worked for me when connecting Mac Studio to LG 27UP650.

USB-C to HDMI adapter didn't work with Mac Studio. However, this adapter did work with MacBook Pro M1 16" (which I only did for testing).

It looks like HDMI ports are faulty then on both Mac Studio and MacBook Pro M1.

Anyway, LG 27UP650 is indeed a great monitor. I bought it instead of LG 5K 27" which I was returning. I compared their performance side by side - and I also didn't see any difference when the monitor placed at the real life distance of ~21".
