Mabey so, but it better be outta this world because no one will be paying a phone and watch plan. Unless it's the same cost

It will be part of a shared device data plan, which already exists on all carriers.

Samsung has been doing it for almost a year now with no huge battery drain.

In other words, it's already being done.

What do you mean no huge battery drain? The Gear S supports only 3G and is huge.

That's still an extra $10/month and another device against the limit.

Don't think so. It is a different type of product then a phone. Never saw Rolex dropping prices.

This has been gone over many times, so I won't comment on the Rolex part, only to say the Omega TC2 took the best part of 30-40 years before it started to climb in value. For most of it's life it's financial value has been pretty much close to junk, only recently has it's value started to climb to anything worth noting.

(For this not into watches, the TC2 is the famous Omega digital watch released in 1972 with the Red LCD display)

You said nobody will pay extra for a shared plan.

Many already are.

There are quite a few individuals paying for shared device plans. This will be just one more device to add to that plan.

It's your choice whether to pay for it or not.

But they definitely targeted Samsung more forcefully than even Google for features in Android that they thought were infringing.

Well yes. Samsung was targeting IP that was an issue of Trademark. Trademark has the strictest requirement to defend. Especially when it's design trademark.

Software copyright and patents you get a bit more leeway because you need time to analyze the allegedly offending material to see if there is offense. But a design trademark is pretty dang clear from the first photo. So if you don't drop the hammer from that first photo, especially if its a photo of an item on the market, it degrades your right to claim the trademark. Even if you can get a court to side with you and stop an item from continued release, you can lose any right to claim damages especially statutory ones.

I didn't say "nobody" would do that. I'm saying that I think lots of people would be turned off by it. I.e. not enough people would demand that capability, partly because it's another data plan or fee to add.

Your exact words...

no one will be paying a phone and watch plan

...but let's not keep arguing this.

The phone companies are already set up for shared device plans. People are already paying for it with the many devices they wish to share. So, adding a watch with SIM capability would just be another device on that plan.

My exact words were "Second, it's another data plan or $10 monthly fee on a data share plan (to use the US as an example)."

My larger point is that I just don't see enough demand yet to justify the engineering changes needed to support 3G/LTE connectivity. GPS can be added without it. That would address the complaints of fitness band users. 3G/LTE also requires a SIM card, which takes up room that could be used by a battery. Eventually we may get there, but I don't expect it in the next Apple Watch.

I think it will be 2017 before we see the second gen. This is a new market for them and they will take the lessons learnt over the next 12 months and use that to enhance the design and capability for a second gen a year further down the line.
I am quite optimistic ago about the first gen. Updates to the OS and better apps will make this gen seem like a different animal by the end of the year

Agreed. I really don't see them refreshing it next year. They've made every effort to brand the watch separately from the iDevice line, primarily by not calling it iWatch. They're treating it differently, and I think that also means the refresh cycle will be longer, probably at the 2 year mark.

I think if anything they'll rethink their strategy with how they bundle the Watches and the price points for some of the bands before then. I don't think you should be forced to buy a specific watch + band combination. It should be that they let you choose your watch finish, size and band.

I went for the Space Gray Black Sport because I wanted a darker finish on the watch. I would of gone with the Space Black SS because it looks awesome but I would never wear a watch with a link band. Made no sense paying $1000+ for the SBSS when half of that money would be collecting dust in a drawer.

Well, it was only in production for 2 years. I doubt prices were dropped. It was expensive at the time. This was around the time that Roger Moore used the Hamilton Pulsar LCD digital watch (still not worth a lot of money, several 100 UD$ maybe?) when playing James Bond. So very cutting edge and cool at the time.

My point was really that technology takes a long, long time to become a collectable, and hence rise in value. Not really comparable to a Rolex.

Rumors are already out there that Apple has a new standalone watch they will be launching within the next year that does not reply on tethering to the iPhone.

Again, rumors, but I would wholeheartedly expect a new watch next year.

This can also be solved with a software update.

They might keep the 1 generation apple watch out when the second genteration of the watch comes out. if that happens then probally the 1st gen will get cheaper. I have the feeling the second gen of apple watch might not be out for a while.

Do you think Apple will keep the current watch around next year (when version 2 comes out) at a cheaper price? Like they've done with the iphone and ipad?

No way. They are price gouging the Apple Watch like customers are stranded in the desert and they are selling water.

To go from a SS watch with silicone band to a stainless steel link band is hundreds of dollars. Considering stainless steel costs pennies for Apple to make, they are making money hand over fist.

I expect next year for there to be a Titanium band option at exorbitant prices. Probably $1200+

Take a look at how much replacement bracelets are for traditional watch brands (in a similar price bracket to the SS Apple watch). I think you are in for a shock!

Indeed.

But the gold buckle ($7000) is higher than even highest end of hand made watch brands like Patek, Lange, etc.
I believe a platinum deployant clasp prob costs that much from those guys.
