Last year I bought 2 different look-alike - one was a single ear piece, the other was a pair. Less than $20 total.
One of the pair didn't work - period.
The others could be charged and could pair with my phone, but then dropped the connection.
The next morning the battery had to be charged again.
They were charged by plugging a tiny barrel connector into the end of the stem.
I returned them.
When I attempted to write a review, I was informed that was not possible for that item.

The knockoffs and original Chinese electronics in general are getting higher quality by the day. It's to the point where they could seriously threaten Apple and Samsung sales in the West–barring potential tariffs and embargoes.

So you're switching vendors because of a product that's six years old?

I've never seen dogs as loyal as some of these fanboys. He's right though, antiquated products at bleeding edge prices.

And yes, I've bought knock-offs for years and they've done pretty well. Very few were disappointments. In fact, my $300 hackintosh laptop with PCIe SSD does 90% of what my $2200 MacBook Pro can do.

Now... who's angry? Get it all out, it's ok.

Do these charge the same way as AirPods? I got the sense that the case is not for on-the-go always-charged use, but for charging the headphones while the case is plugged into the USB-C only.

and i didn't read the linked article so, yeah...

Really? I have my AirPods since launch in December 2016, and mine are still going strong, where at least I’m able to hold 50% or more battery life with my usage.
Ditto
[doublepost=1551849560][/doublepost]I will not encourage these cheats by buying their crap. And FWIW my AirPods that I bought on release of the product are still kicking ass. Love them.

I don't care about buying products just because they have the Apple logo or name on them. I buy Apple products when they meet my needs at a price that I consider to be a good value. If a product with similar specs is available from another company at a lower price, to me it's worth considering, and I certainly wouldn't criticize others for making buying decisions that are different from mine.

I bought the Apple AirPods and was extremely pleased with almost every aspect of them. Apple makes a big deal about how easy they are to pair, but that's a minor point to me. You don't have to pair them repeatedly, so a fast and convenient pairing process is less important to me. The problem is that even after they've been paired, they wouldn't connect to my iPhone or Mac automatically after taking them out of the case, which other headphones I own do.

I used them almost exclusively for phone calls, since I spend hours on the phone every day, and it's important for me to be hands-free. When a call comes in, I want to be able to open the AirPod case and put one in my ear and have it automatically and quickly connect to my phone so I could answer the call on the AirPod. They rarely connected that fast. I would usually have to answer the call, then put it on speakerphone while I tried to connect the AirPods, usually having to go to Settings > Bluetooth to accomplish the connection, which took 10-15 seconds. Not cool.

Once connected, the sound quality was great and I liked the fact that I could wear one AirPod until the battery ran low, then put the other one in, have the sound automatically move to stereo, then pull the drained one out and charge it in the case while I continued the call. They charged very quickly, and the Bluetooth range was good. My frustration was ended when I lost them a few months ago (left in an Uber). I've been hesitant to replace them, with rumors that new models may be released soon.

As for these knockoffs, if the sound quality is the same and they are reasonably well made, the lack of the W1 chip wouldn't deter me from considering them. My biggest concern is the Bluetooth range is apparently less and they can't be used one at a time, like the AirPods. Also, I don't know how well they would connect after being paired, and it appears to take longer to recharge them. The lower price is nice, but I'd rather hold out for higher quality and specs, and hope that Apple improves the connection process in the new version.

With Apple's economies of scale, it probably costs them less to manufacture the real ones than it costs to manufacture these knockoffs

AirPods knockoffs are quite popular in my country, but usually I can immediately see they're fake as they come in different colors and are bigger. I know some of them act like two separate Bluetooth headphones so you have to pair both of them, and of course no tapping and no play/pause when you take them out and put back in. They sell for 20 or 30 euro.
These one look exactly like AirPods, hard to take them apart if you don't look at the case.

Seems you can get these even less expensive if you cut out this "Knockies" American middle-man. Just ordered the newer version ("i12") for a total of $23.99 delivered from AliExpress.

They will probably have some annoying flaw, but at 15% the cost of normal AirPods, worth a punt for fun!

Apple's AirPods are one of its most popular product lines in recent years, and have resulted in crazy demand, memes, and dozens of knockoff products.

In our latest YouTube video, we picked up a pair of $50 i10 TWS earphones that have been designed to look like AirPods to see how they measure up to the real thing.

The i10 TWS AirPods knockoffs are almost carbon copies of the AirPods and at first glance, it's hard to tell them apart. There are some noticeable differences to distinguish the two, though, which will be obvious to AirPods owners.

Instead of a Lightning port, the i10 TWS earbuds have a USB-C port for charging, though they also support Qi-based wireless charging, which the AirPods don't offer. There's also an LED charging indicator light on the front and no Bluetooth pairing button on the back.

When it comes to the case, the i10 TWS is clearly lower quality than the AirPods as it's lighter, feels flimsier, and makes a clicking noise when you open the lid, but the fake AirPods inside look quite similar to real AirPods.

The i10 TWS earbuds are nearly indistinguishable from AirPods, and they sound pretty similar too. Sound quality was about the same with both, and the same goes for voice quality when using the microphone for calls.

Like the AirPods, the i10 TWS earbuds use gestures, with a single tap able to play/pause music and a double tap able to skip tracks. A two-second hold activates a voice assistant like Siri.

There are missing AirPods features, though. There's no autopause/autoplay function when removing one of the i10 TWS earbuds from your ear, and there's no simple pairing due to the lack of a W1 chip.

The i10 TWS earbuds pair to a device like any other Bluetooth headphones, and they also don't enjoy the same long range. As for battery life, they last for about three hours worth of streaming music and charge up in about an hour and a half over USB-C.

So while these look, feel, and sound like AirPods, the i10 TWS earbuds are missing some key features, which explains why the price is so much lower. You can snap these up for about $50, which is more than $100 less than the AirPods.

Would you ever buy knockoff AirPods instead of the real thing? Let us know in the comments.

Can i the best of 2 worlds ?
I would really like USB-C, and a freaking charging indicator!

Also i dont feel like the handoff is perfect between iphone and airpods, and to see how much battery is left i have to unlock my iphone and pray to strange old gods that it will pop up on screen... it work less than 20% of the times when i want it to show on screen

And without having to actually have R$D costs.
You’re right about that. I don’t like it when companies making replica’s and it shouldn’t be allowed. But with the excessive pricing and outrageous big profit margins on apple’s products, I make an exception :D

That’s my double standard

Nice way to support copyright infringement. Doesn’t seem like the brightest move from a site that focuses on Apple products.
I’m happy Macrumors doesn’t have tunnel vision. I find most of their articles unbiased and open for discussions.

Have you ever read DED articles on Appleinsider?

Yes these charge the same way and yes the case charges the fake AirPods too just like Apples.
The fakes have the added bonus of battery level indicators AND wireless Qi charging.
The sound quality is as close as my ears can tell to being the same and the connection / reconnecting is as simple as the real ones. I just remove them from their case and put in my ears then they are connected with 5 seconds.
Range I have tested and found to be around the 6-8metre range (tested at local climbing gym both vertically and horizontally).

The fakes even drop in the Apple case and vice versa.

All in all have been pleased with them as a cheap alternative but they do have minor flaws such as dropping signal momentarily on the odd occasion but they reconnect within seconds.

Between my iPhone, my Apple Watch (Series 2), and my Air Pods, I can literally start music on my phone, pop in my air pods, put on my watch and go for a run leaving my phone on the counter while the air pods play on without missing a beat. Now, I am choosing music from a playlist that I have specifically loaded on my watch but the seamless handoff (in addition to the high quality) is what makes the Air Pods worth the money.
