how do you check your status?

ChrisN

When you go into your account and it shows a picture of your phone with "your device" you can check your upgrade status.

FWIW mine has shown eligible for upgrade since February, and I bought an iPhone at launch. I was 9 months into a two year contract when I bought the iPhone, and based on my monthly bill my upgrade status hit just like it would have under normal circumstances (if I hadn't bought an iPhone I would have been eligible at 18 months for an upgrade.)

What does your upgrade status read?
You are not currently eligible to upgrade your device online. This line may be eligible for an equipment discount on 12/10/2009.
Interesting, though - 'You are not currently eligible to upgrade your device online.' I believe this is new information added since yesterday. Still :(

Weird. I wasn't supposed to be eligible until November, but now it reads:

You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option. This line may be eligible for an equipment discount on 07/18/2008

I hope that means I can get the iPhone at a good upgrade price a week after it comes out.

This is VERY interesting. Unless all the posters who have had their upgrade eligibility changed this weekend are all coincidentally at the "usual" 18-21 month of their contracts (and would normally again be upgrade eligible), something is definitely happening at AT&T.

This means that these posters are not just eligible for the 3G iPhone, they are eligible for ANY AT&T subsidized phone. I understand if AT&T had an agreement with Apple to let all 2G owners upgrade to 3G, but to officially proclaim all 2G owners eligible for any subsidized phone is very unusual!

If true, then what is to stop me, as subsidized Blackberry owner, from buying a 2G iPhone on eBay for $400, activate it for $36, then resell it in less than 3 days for $400 again? That would make me automatically eligible for a new Blackberry!

I think it's strange too, but they probably have limited upgrade (to iphone 3G only) or they don't think many people think the way you do.

Yesterday I wasn't eligible until 11/03/08, but today it reads...

This line is eligible for reduced equipment pricing when you sign up for a new 2-year service agreement.

Well that makes everything a bit easier...

well makes it sounds like I will not be buying an iPhone G3 because my account was made in jan and I refused to buy first generation product from apple because of their long standing history of well problems with there first gen produces.

And not this scratch a new iPhone. I was giong to get one to replace my dieing iPod and get a cool phone with it.

Well I hear the G4's are coming out on Tuesday. :p

how to get an even cheaper 3G iphone....

since we are all upgrade eligible, what is to stop us from getting a good cheaper phone, the next day going back and getting the iphone for the 200 bucks and then selling said cheaper phone for like 250 (since people won't have to have a contract for it) and making money or probably at least making out even????

Last week my account said I was eligible 12/1108. Today I am eligible. Doesn't matter I am a current iPhone user anyhow, so I figured I would be no matter what they said on their website.

That might be possible, but in effect gaming the system by signing 2 contracts simultaneously. Hopefully AT&T has their stuff together and pinches people trying to game this. Perhaps when you go to Apple or AT&T and they verify you are eligible, the eligibility will immediately be removed once you buy.

anybody getting the eliglbe status after selling their iPhone? I sold my a week ago and I can't check my status online right now - i forgot my password and got locked out...

My opinion

My status has changed, “This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement. You can also take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option”. I think this proves that NOT EVERYONE WILL BE ELIGABLE FOR THE 199/299 UPGRADE.

My opinion is this

- Current iphone costumers will be eligible for the discounted price
- Those who sold their iphones, befor the 3g launch get screwed, although they might have gotten more money for their phone.
-New costumers will be eligible for the upgrade price 199/299.
- Current non-iphone costumers that are not eligible for an upgrade will have to pay full retail

Guys this isn't anything new. First gen iPhone owners have always had this luxury of getting the phone for 199/299 dollars.

Yes, I am eligible and sold my iPhone back in June. I've been running a cheap Samsung phone this whole time, which was assigned to my line on the AT&T website, so they knew I wasn't currently running an iPhone, but either way I am now upgrade eligible on my line.

That is odd as my brother sold his iPhone and then removed the iPhone plan so he could use a blackberry until new one is released. Did you maintain the iPhone plan? My brother's line is showing NOT eligible. Unless they are doing this status update in waves I don't think everyone who sold their iPhones will get the ability to update to new 3G phone.

His local AT&T store told him it is not a big deal as they can see he had an iPhone, but that was prior to this update on statues. Hopefully his local store has the ability to help him on launch day.

Yes, the site has upgraded for some reason. I have a FAN (corporate) personal account. My phones, including iPhones, have always stated that I'm not eligible to upgrade online. I had to call the Business section for the Corporate Government account to check on upgrading. Now, it states that I'm eligible to upgrade my iPhones online with a new 2 year commitment. If you click on Upgrade Now, it takes you to a list of phones, and the ones that they have available are all listed including the ones that have discounts. The iPhones are not listed yet.
I personally believe that this has more to do with them upgrading their website than with the iPhones.
Remember, you've been receiving emails from ATT Wireless stating that they had a new website. They have been working on it and upgrading different sections over the last couple of months.
So, don't get too excited yet, and read too much into the site changes.

Corporate Government FAN account
Retired from the Government (account still good)
1 Motorola MPX 220 gets the entire account discount on service Family 1400 Shared Plan *$80 minus 25%=$60.00
2 iPhones that are on the $9.99 added line plus $20 Unlimited Data & 200 Txt.
Total Plan $119.98 plus all Taxes (for 3 Phone lines).

I sold my iPhone on June 6th. Kept the iphone data plan and am currently using a samsung go phone with my old iPhone's sim.

up until yesterday it said the line wasn't eligible for an upgrade until june 2009. but as of yesterday it is eligible.

So i think keeping the plan is the big issue here. If you sold it and got rid of the plan, you probably aren't eligible, sold it and kept the plan you are.

Yeah I was going to respond before I read berkleeboy's post saying that it's probably the fact that you're on an iPhone plan rather than having an iPhone.

It has also been posted that NON-iPhone users status still reads not elgible if they are indeed not elgible. I hear what you saying, but as with anything there is 2 sides to every story ;)

Ok, but there was still confusion and everyone's upgrade eligibility is a new development, so yeah I would say this is something new.

No there really wasn't any confusion. Original iPhone owners have always been able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G for 199/299 dollars. The confusion is whether or not current non-iPhone AT&T consumers can get that price.
