I got the 5S the day it came out.

So I guess with AT&T, I can either pay full price for the device, or do the AT&T Next.

The date for the contract is 2015, not 2014 like on the OP.

I'm confused... So you can get your iPhone at upgrade price if you wait until the 21st but if you preorder it its way more?

Sort of. Full price on the 16GB 6 is $650 or thereabouts. So AT&T seems to be offering you $200 off, which is better than nothing I guess.

I thought $850 is how much a contract free 64gb 6+ costs. I've had an iPhone 5 for over a year (year and a half maybe?) I can't believe it costs that much money if I want to buy a 6+.

Apple has changed the pricing structure. The iPhone 5 was 16GB ($649), 32GB ($749). But this year... with the 6+ being a $100 price increase compared to the 6. That's why the price is $849. I plan on getting the 64GB since it's pretty much a no brainer.

How is that 'insane' ?

The full non contract price has always been $600-$900, since 2009. Maybe you didn't realize it and thought it was only $200, but that was the subsidized price which forced you into a 2 year contract (with $400 cancellation fee)

Just because it's been that way for a long period of time doesn't mean it's not insane. It is. It's a ridiculous amount of money for a phone when you can get a tablet so much cheaper. They charge those ridiculous fees because people are willing to pay them.

How does AT&T's jump program handle taxes? Do you pay the taxes up front and then pay the monthly fee, or do the taxes get split up in the monthly fees?

For both the subsidized $200 and the regular price phone, you pay the taxes up front. But for the $200 phone, you only pay taxes on the $200 not the full price, at least in my state.

In the next plan you pay $0 for the phone initially, but owe taxes on the full amount immediately.

Contract is up on launch day however I will be preordering a 6+ and ponying up the $850. After 7 years i'll be leaving AT&T and going to a regional carrier (ACS) for $25 flat a month for unlimited talk/text and a gig of data. Prepaid. If I want more data, its $5 more per gig that rolls over for up to a year.

I just called AT&T (didn't read entire thread so maybe someone already posted this) and they said the new two year contract is for online orders only. If you go to a store and buy one and then go home and activate it as your new phone, you don't get locked into a new contract. I'd rather be able to order online and not have to go to a store but at least there is a way around this new contract bs.

I purchased in the store (full price) and they still renewed my contract.

1) I was told that they are not taking away any of the UNLIMITED plans. That they don't change peoples plans unless people call to change them.

2) I was also told that if I changed to a NEXT ACCOUNT, that I would keep everything on my account exactly the same- from the minutes to the unilimited features- that ALL the NEXT is, is a finance plan for the choosen phone

3) I also learned that as a BlackBerry user, the iPhone will cost an extra 10 dollars a month to use on service plans (when compared to BlackBerry at least)

4) That my contract ends on March 22, 2015 and I am ELIGIBLE for a Next account if I wanted to switch my account and upgrade to a iPhone6 at some pointe.

All the info yall posted here has been a great help, thanks everyone for being so detailed. Seemingly, the NEXT account seems like it has some good in it ;;;shrug;;;

21st of 2015. Pretty sure the original story has the wrong year listed.

The original story isn't wrong. It depends on your specific case and how you've upgraded in the past, etc. I'd have to pay full price on the 12th but will get a partial upgrade ($200 off) on the 21st of 2014. Some people are already eligible for and will get a partial upgrade on the 12th, but would get a "full upgrade" price on the 21st of 2015.

Best is just to use the eligibility checker and see for yourself. The poster above who said he would have to pay full price or get AT&T Next is reading the prices wrong. He's getting a discount now even without AT&T next (no upgrade pricing 64GB iPhone 6 is going to be $749, not $549 as in his chart).

I already knew this, but my upgrade is July of next year. That will stink, having an upgrade and having to wait almost three months to get the updated phone!

Just pay your termination fee and upgrade. Should be like $60.

AT&T's Next payments is a big ripoff. You end up paying a lot more for your device, and if you want to upgrade after one year you can't sell your device because you'll need to give it back to AT&T. So really is a lease unless you pay it off and then some for two years.

I have a strange situation here. My family plan has 5 lines and 4 of them were upgraded to iPhone 5s last year. However, when I'm checking now, ALL lines are eligible for upgrading to iPhone 6 at a new 2-year contract price.

I am more worried than feeling lucky as I'm not sure if something bad will happen if I go ahead and purchase iPhone 6 at this price when the previous 2-year contract has only been fulfilled for less than one year.

I did the math and it looks like Verizon Edge only pays off for me if I have the 10GB data plan. I have 2 phones and 3 tablets, though I don't think it affects the tablets.

If I stick with subsidized, what will Verizon hit me with for "activation fees" or whatever? My contract will be fulfilled and I'm an existing customer, but haven't gone through an upgrade with them before.

Thanks

So I am curious if anyone knows this. If I trade in a phone and go with the Next plan, does the "credit" get taken off the total and that total is split up over the 18 months? I originally thought I'd be making a down payment due to misunderstanding of how it worked and the trade in would cover most of that. Since thats not the case I am wondering if that credit is still applied. I'd almost pass on the trade in and sell it after for cash vs getting a gift card if that were the case.

I plugged my information into AT&T and used the *639# thing and found this tidbit out:

I purchased an iPhone 5s 32GB Gold a few months ago and used the 12mos. Next plan. Apparently, if I want to upgrade to the 6/6+ all I have to do is bring my phone with me, trade it in, pay the additional payments up to the 12th month and I become eligible for a new phone. I think the page said it would cost me 375 dollars plus my phone turned in.

Does anyone have any insight on what a tier 2 AT&T store might have in stock? Mostly interested in a iPhone 6+ Gold 64GB model...

Thanks! :cool::apple:

Yes thats right ... When I switched to Next from 2yr -- I had an option to trade-in my 5 to 5S if I wanna up to 6 I would've turn-in the 5S 8 or 9 payments @ 33.00 to get 6 .. @ $300 the timing was wrong for me ... TouchID wasn't worth the price @ the time

If you don't mind me asking, was your last upgrade the 5s and do you have AT&T?

That stinks. Maybe the rep I called is wrong or maybe you just have to buy it and leave and activate it yourself. Did you have the store switch service to the new phone?

FUD at Sprint

The local Sprint store said I could buy a $299 64gb iPhone 6 from Apple and connect it to their $60 a month unlimited plan. Sprint Chat confirmed this. A call to Sprint though (for sanity's sake) confirmed that no -- I can't. I would need to pay full retail for the phone or buy it on installments. Or pay $80 a month and pay an unknown amount for the phone. Or ..then there were a ton of other options with families, multi lines, tradeins etc -- all seemed very expensive. I'll have to wait.

how does pre ordering work if i currently have verizon but will go to at&t using then next PROGRAM?

I bought the iP5 2 years ago on Sept 14th. My upgrade notification says that I can upgrade with a 2 year service agreement and a $40 upgrade fee. Is the $40 always there or is it because it's 2 days early?

Hm...well I upgraded to the Note 3 last year, but it appears I'm eligible for the Next program which should be cheaper? Might as well just upgrade then?

Always there. The only time they take it away is if you either go to the next program or complain a lot.

2 questions re: AT&T Next

Ok, I have 2 Next questions:

1) Once you get into the Next program....if you choose to upgrade after 12 months, can you do that online and then send the old phone in? Or do you have to always upgrade in the store?

So when the iPhone 6S comes out next year, are people able to get in on pre-orders......or does AT&T need the old phone back first?

2) Does anybody know what AT&T really means when they say:
**Current smartphone must be in good physical and fully functional condition.

What if you dropped it and there is a dent/scratch on side? What about screen scratches?

-Kevin

I ordered the T-Mobile contract-free iPhone 5s and it was exactly the same. Inserted my AT&T sim and activated through iTunes and received the "Congratulations your phone is unlocked" message". Hope this helps!

Thank you! I'll order the T-Mobile unlocked model.
