I just can't wait until a few years down the road when NFC is in a lot more places and companies won't be so frightened by the possibility of it not working out that they have to test it out first. And even further out when NFC is everywhere and a whole generation will grow up only hearing about credit cards and never using one once.

It's simply common sense. What if they bought equipment that doesn't work as well as predicted in the real world? Not everything can be fixed with software updates and gas pumps are especially expensive pieces of equipment (that's why they have until 2017 to get chip support vs this October for everyone else). At least they'd only need to replace readers at two stations instead of several thousand of them.

Now to be able to accept their own credit card to pay at the pump.

Their own credit card sucks. I've been a card customer for 24 years and last month our bank made an error on our checks (just one check in the stack had a print error) so when my wife paid the bill it got returned. They then closed our account without notice (my card suddenly stopped working) even though our bank had already fixed the error and paid them. We ended up paying twice and had a credit, but they still would not reopen our account unless our bank faxed them to notify that it was truly the bank's fault. Then they said it will take 14 days to reopen our account and there is no guarantee of it being reopened. I was floored and still am shaking my head about it. Talk about customer service from the stone age!

While this was one of the first locations I wanted Apple Pay implemented, I've now realized it would be a huge hassle. My phone is always mounted and connected on the dash phone holder. I would have to disconnect and remove, then put it back and connect when done. Where as I can slip out the credit card faster and easier. Not to mention handling the pump then my phone, but I won't get into that OCD part. ;) The only advantage is not needing to enter zip code I guess, but you still have to answer no, I'm not a fragging Vons member, stop harassing me.

Wow. Always lots of Debbie Downers on MR, but this tread is depressing with the volume of odd complaints about obscure things.

Apple pay at the pump is awesome. Been using it at Meijer gas pumps since launch, first with the phone and now with the Watch. It's the most obvious use-case for Apple Pay IMO.

BOOM!!!!
Apparently sparks from mobile phones can ignite gases at petrol stations/ gas stations.

They can cause sparks and ignite fires.

No, it's not the spark from the cell phone that's the issue. It's static electricity. It's the same reason you should touch something to discharge yourself as you slide out of the car.

Nope. Cell phones don't pose any harm at all when you use them when fueling.

Mythbusters did an episode on this: http://mythbustersresults.com/episode2

And snopes busts that too: http://www.snopes.com/autos/hazards/gasvapor.asp

I took a couple of pictures of the Chevron Station mentioned in the article on my way home from work. As expected the payment process was quick and easy, I even payed for the gas using my watch.

The people in charge of pricing gas are not the same ones who brought Apple Pay to the pumps; these are unrelated issues.

You think, I heard Taylor Swift wrote an open letter to Apple telling them if they don't give her an extra $1 per gallon of gas bought through Apple Pay she will tell all her minions to stop buying both fuel and music.

I'm hoping for this as well. I was just in Vegas and was very disappointed that Apple Pay wasn't accepted anywhere. Cabs, McDonalds, vending machines, no luck.

Its because in reality nobody gives a ****. Asking a retailer to cater to 15% of mobile customers with an exclusive payment system is a tall order, even for Apple.

Now THAT's convenient using Apple Watch. Thanks for the pics as well.

You do know in a full service gas station you can get out your car and pump the gas yourself...

In some states, no, you can't, it's against the law. And regardless, that wasn't the question asked.

Wish you were as powerful as Taylor Swift, eh?

Chevron should give deep discounts for using Apple Pay. In general they charge about a dollar more than other gas stations even when paying in cash.

From what I know about Chevron, they should be having the cheapest gas prices around. Especially in California regarding Elk Hills. They love to hose the customers.
