Google today announced that updates made to the Chrome browser have improved performance on Apple's Macs, with Google Chrome earning a score over 300 on the Speedometer benchmark that evaluates the responsiveness of a browser.

In a post on the Chromium blog, Google explains the technological improvements that have been introduced over the past months to make Chrome the "fastest possible browser." Google says that in the M99 release of Chrome, which is the newest version, it was able to "substantially" increase browser speeds across all major platforms.
Building on many performance changes over the last year, we enabled ThinLTO in M99, a build optimization technique that prioritizes code focused on browser speed. The result? An additional across-the-board speed bump that makes Chrome 7 percent faster than Safari.
Since Chrome launched for M1 Macs in late 2020, optimizations have made the browser 43 percent faster in 15 months. According to Google, Chrome is now 15 percent faster than Safari when it comes to graphics performance, and the company says it will continue to invest in innovative features that "push the performance of Chrome."

No surprise considering Safari hasn't been updated since 2012.

The biggest issue with Chrome is that it has RAM limits. Who cares how much more RAM it uses when it fails to load pages before using all available memory. Struggles with a measly 100 or so tabs.

Technically, the browser is just a feature-enriched wrapper around the rendering engine. So how are you restricted? Where does WebKit (on iOS) fall down for you?
Personal preference, I like Mozilla and the work they did with Gecko and Fenix on Android and I dream about seeing it on iOS as well.
The more competition the better.
I don’t quite like Safari’s philosophy and how it’s setup but since it doesn’t have any real competition it’s “good enough”.

Compeition is a good thing, I'm actually really impessed with the Chromium based Edge on Mac. If it wasn't for all my password management with icloud I'd switch. Safari has been giving me lots of headaces of late.

But are the performance improvements in Chromium, or just the Google-specific Chrome browser that wraps around the Chromium engine? Will all Chromium-based browsers see these build improvements, or just Google Chrome?

Faster your Mac the higher the score, also how fast your ISP connection used with less latency. Latest 12.3 w/Safari beta I see a M1 iMac doing 285, Ethernet, same with M1 Max 295, Ethernet. I’m sure when Safari is optimized it will do better.

Also note that about 5% and less then 2% different with comparisons vs this latest google announcement.
