Does browser performance really control website loading speeds that much anymore? I remember debating this stuff 10 years ago, but with today's computers and browsers, I would think that (given good internet speed) a simple website would load nearly instantaneously on all browsers. I would think the ad tracking crap is really the only thing that impacts the "speed" perception much these days.

It’s shocking we still can’t live stream on safari we have to use chrome

Just updated and Chrome is beyond snappier. Instant page loads.
Betting it is still a memory whore.

Sure if its a very basic page. A page with high res graphics, video as graphics, interactive elements, etc. not so much.

The hosting site makes a big difference too though. Is it the browser, or did the site go for the cheap Go Daddy.com hosting plan?

March has not been kind to Safari, with calls for fixes and features on top of this news that it is also slower

Meh. I don't care about microbenchmark performance in a world where every web site is 1000 trackers and 2 megs of javascript to show a simple static page all amplified by the tracking and advertising networks of the person claiming to have the fractionally faster portal in which to have to put up with this crap.

But it doesn’t have promotion support, now safari has it I can’t go back to chrome it’s horrible
Chrome doesn't run at 120Hz on macOS? That's weird. I'd think they'd want to take advantage of high refresh to make the browser feel faster.
Chromium before version 98 fully supports ProMotion. Version 98 introduced a change that broke ProMotion. This change was reverted for Chromium 101. You can check it out in the Canary channel today and it should be fixed. It will take a couple months for this to move to the stable channel, unfortunately. Since Chromium is so widely used, this affects Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and many other browsers.

I have 4 browsers on my machine.

Safari, Firefox, Opera and Vivaldi.

I tend to avoid any browser that is meant for mainstream users or in other words, people who shouldn’t be using internet at all because its a major safety concern considering their lack of knowledge on how the internet works.

Chrome and Edge are those two browsers at the moment. They are most prone to being compromised for the same reasons I mentioned above.

If you're wanting to use the Speedometer benchmark yourself, here's a warning: It flashes things at you basically every second. If you suffer from epilepsy or just flashing lights in general, don't run the test. I don't have epilepsy, but it still hurt my eyes.

A competing browser getting better is a good thing, maybe this will get the Safari team on overdrive to take back the crown but honestly I’d rather they made the browser/engine better instead.

Synthetic benchmarks don’t really do much for me, bugs and lack of features do

Does it still use huge amounts of RAM?
Not in my use case. If you’re just a casual user, using either or, doesn’t really matter.

To save battery/CPU, use h264ify chrome extension and disable av1. YouTube then uses VP9 and it basically uses the same battery as Safari does on YouTube.
