The new spinpoint F3 is a nice quite, cool running drive. The WD Black and the Baraccuda both out perform it but speed isn't everything.

What about fans for your Megahalems??

I'd suggest this fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185060 you might want to go ahead and buy 2, if your temps are to high with 1 you can put the second on in Push-Pull.

They make a 1600rpm version that is dead silent but only moves 80cfm or so but you could get 2 of those if you want a quiet computer under load. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185059
But it appears to be out of stock right now

maybe I am confused about something, but I thought the megahalems were the heavy duty fans. The CM690II Advanced already comes with two fans installed in the front and back and figured they would be enough on top of the megahalems and could set them to a push-pull.

also, do you have any idea about wireless. What do you do for internet?

The megahalems is a heat sink for the cpu, it doesn't come with fans though. I wouldn't take the fans off the case to use on the megahalems. You will need the air flow through the case they provide plus they will be low rpm low cfm fans and not really what you would want to use for the cooler.

I use the LAN for internet

so you use an ethernet cable? do you know how I can get wireless on my hackintosh?

okay, I really am confused (but it is my first time doing all this). I will get two additional fans (not a price breaker) but i dont understand how they work with the megahalem. I put them ON the megahaelm or i just use them to dissipate the heat drawn up by the megahalem?

They go on the megahalem, they clip on with wire clips. You will have to have at least one fan on it, but for 4ghz OC I would use 2x in push-pull.

check out this site to see what kext are availble for wireless devices http://www.kexts.com/

I glanced through it and saw several, but I would post that question over at the insane asylum. I'm sure you will get an answere as to what wireless will work.

It it unsatisfactory, but it looks like worst case scenario i can just use a wireless usb stick for internet.

the "insane asylum" is the kakewalk thread?

also, what do you think about me downgrading GPU to ATI Radeon HD 4850 or GeForce 9800 GTX or NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 I figure it might be a little safer because the imac/mac pro uses it, but it doesnt sound like the 4890 has caused any problems for other hackintoshes

Pick up a Sapphire ATI 4870 as it is relatively cheap and supported OOB with OS X built in drivers.

37db seems a little loud for the first one. What do you think about http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/silenx-ixtrema-pro-120mm-quiet-case-fan-ixp-76-18-p-16545.html (18db, 90CFM)? Is there a problem between ball bearing and sleeve bearing?

I am leaning towards the Noctua NH-D14 because it seems like it comes a little more set up and has gotten GREAT reviews. The thing is HUGE though and it isnt compatible with my current ram (I would change it to G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9T-6GBRH)

I cannot find a cheap ATI 4870, but will this 9800GTX+ do the trick?

I am a graphics card away from ordering the system...hopefully. I did decide to go with the Noctua and will report back any excellent/horrible experiences.

You can't go wrong with the NH-D14 it's the best HS out right now.

Nvidia has better support with Hacks but I don't know what all is out there right now and what would be the best choice.

It looks like the GTX+ has been working for a while in OS X. MjP99 on insanelymac reported that his EVGA 9800 GTX+ was working with his vanilla install of Leopard following Aquamac's guide. I flicked to the last page on the guide thread and So?Crates talks about having an EVGA 9800 GTX+ working in 10.6.3 (although it didn't work in 10.6 and 10.6.1 apparently).

I have ordered my system (I went with the 9800GT instead), but am thinking that it might makes sense to switch from this 9800GT to either one of these ATI 4870 - HIS or ASUS or XFX as you guys suggested. Does it matter that it is not the Sapphire brand? Would you recommend this GPU switch?

Also, does anyone have any experience with digital_dreamer's install method and its ease of use vs kakewalk?

Taking the plunge, I have the following on the way:

i7 920
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
12gb Corsair DDR3-1600
Sparkle Calibre 9800 GT OC 512mb
Corsair Hydro H50 cooler
CoolerMaster CM690 II case
OWC ModXStream-Pro PSU

I'm stoked to say the least. Will be a blast to have a PC to tweak again, it's been a long time... and being able to run OS X on it as well makes it a true win. I'll keep my 21.5" iMac for a while, but if this proves to be stable, updatable and solid I'll probably sell the iMac. I'll still have a C2D 17" that my 4 year old son uses available for any emergency ops that I need a 'real' mac for.

The only item in the list I'm unsure of on working with the lastest 10.6.3 is the 9800 GT video card. Will see how that goes.

I am a little worried about the 9800gt too, but Clausewitz on insanelymac has it running perfect in 10.6.3. We both have evga 1gb instead of sparkle 512mb though. I PMed mrjanek of kakewalk and he said 9800gt had great support. He runs an ati radeon4890 for his system.

Excellent configuration; But I am wondering why don't you install ATI 5xxx instead of 4890? I believe the first one is more powerful

the ATI 5xxx series is not supported yet.
We will have to wait till apple puts them into their mac pros

Thanks for your input; I am really disappointed to hear that. I hope they come with something special because it has been a while since ATI released the 5xxx generation. I believe if we wait for few months we may see the ATI release its 6xxx generation.

Yep, ran into this recently with an MSI gaming laptop I purchased with the 5850 in it... Was a no go because of the card.

I may search around for a 4870 or perhaps a gtx 285 since those are both available for the mac and natively supported (hopefully that will help). I think as long as I stick to the 1gb versions of those cards I should be good out of the box.

4870 was 100% plug and play in my setup. The 4980 requires patched drivers.

Who makes your 4870? If it is a simple card then I would assume it would be better supported in the future as the mac pro runs it. As I said in a previous post:

My card is a Sapphire 4870 1GB, don't see why the other brands won't work fine with OS X in an x58 board as long as the device id is the same. Perhaps Cindori could confirm?

Bad news, I just got a message from clausewitz on insanely mac blaming his 9800GT GPU for some of his current issues. he is getting a newer version of the of evga 9800GT though and thinks it was the specific card. Still not comforting though.

Of HIS, ASUS, and XFX, which brand is most reliable if I go ahead and order a 4870? Why does everyone seem to prefer sapphire and why are sapphire 4870 1gb cards so expensive on google shopping?

Rankrotten, what install program did you use?

hack build

hey all, i am a newb but ive been following the forum religiously for about a year now! :D i am planning on building myself a hack at the end of this summer (most likely aug/sept) and i was wondering if i could get advice on the parts i have selected from newegg and compatibility and all that.

Soo to begin with here are the parts: https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=12785505

I had a couple questions for Cindori/Spanky/anyone else knowledgeable in hacking..
1. Is 12gb ram overkill? or should i go with 6gb?
2. When building a hack will i have to do any flashing to the gpu? (that sounds incredibly difficult)
3. Would I need anything else than what i have in that list? or could i even go without anything?

Thanks in advance to anyone that helps! I am REALLY REALLY excited to build this machine!! im going to college next year and will be using it to do some amateur editing in FCS and i just cant wait! :D

I, too, am a newb headed off to college next year who is super excited about building a hackingtosh, but I can give you my 2 cents.

1. Yes. 6gb is plenty.
2. No flashing needed
3. I was unable to access your wish list. Are you sure it is public?
