Cindori am i right in assuming you need a working mac/hack to setup the install disc drive before you can do this? im thinking of selling my mac pro and going back to a hack for the same reasons as you...

The install disc drive? What's that? Cindori is using a vanilla Snow Leopard install disk - compared to a bog standard Mac Pro he has ten extra kexts, and nothing else.

yes but in his guide he says to make an image of the install dvd and then restore it to an empty hard drive which im assuming he then add's the kexts and makes mods to, which then can be booted off to install onto the main hard disk.

You are missing something - the vital piece that makes the non-Apple hardware work is the bootloader which has the job of emulating the EFI BIOS used by Macs. Yes, it's a bog standard Mac with the hardware kexts, but without a program such as Chameleon, the whole thing wouldn't work.

You can prepare this install disk on a Mac but you have to be very careful that you don't install Chameleon onto the Mac - it will destroy your Mac install by making it unbootable.

No, I know about Chameleon - but this guy doesn't, and I'm not going to confuse him by mentioning it. He said he saw Cindori's guide already, so he can follow that.

Well i took a slightly different route than Cindori and stuck a spare 200gb drive in my mac pro and then carbon copy cloned my main hd to it. I then ran through Cindori's guide but instead of creating a Extra folder on the main hd i created it on the EFI partition.. personally i like to not have anything non standard on the main hd. When i get my new machine i will just carbon copy clone the hard drive to my new 1tb disk and it will be all good to go :)

Awesome update:

hackintosh_3.jpg

Made a concept render of my idea. I want it suspended in the air.

I am ordering parts for this soon if my current Hackintosh project works out. I just got all the parts and am still trying to calm down from all the awesomeness. :D

your render is sweet but I don't get it. where's the PSU, GPU gonna go? you know you're gonna have 5x cables running to the mobo etc. cpu cooler?

I need to think of these things you speak of :D .

I am thinking watercooling because it is smaller, the PSU on the outside so the mobos are easily disconnected. I also want to design some sort of hook suspension system so the mobos can be taken of easily. Now that I got the parts I also got the dimensions so I'll be able to make some more precise space calculations.

Will keep updated.

I have just started trying to install OSX on my machine. I bought virtually the same hardware as you sans HD and videocard and 1600mhz 12GB Ram, my problem is it will not go beyond the Chameleon buildcache fase. Every step along the way went flawless until I put the disk back in my hackintosh, swapped my MacPro 8800GT in the machine and tried to Boot Single User. Some text appears and within a second it reboots. It does this every time no matter what kind of Boot I select. I am really close to succes so failing this step and having NO clue at how to proceed is not cool.

I followed every step of your guide to the letter, could you help me figure out what I need to do to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

BAAAH! My fault! Sorry man! I just noticed I used my old Leopard install Disc and not my SNOW leopard disc! HURRDUURRDERPDERP :p

I started with a Hackintosh Core 2 Duo system. It was a great experience. I learned a lot and truly loved it. Then, I saved up for a Mac Pro Nehalem and was happy that I finally got 'the real thing'. Now, with the audio bug and firewire issues, I might go back to building a Hackintosh again if Apple doesn't fix the problem. Funny how things goes sometimes. Its like a vicious cycle.

Anyway, thanks for sharing for the great tips Cindori. I am sure all the great effort in compiling this will be useful for everyone. Cheers!

Yeah....'cause "cheap PCs" nowadays have dual 6-core Gulftown CPUs....a 3200$ 12-core MacPro + Ati 58xx + Lightpeak (?) will rip the ass of your hackintosh......

What flavor koolaid are you drinking?
Lightpeak is two years away,
which mean Apple will have it in five years along with BD burners.

again, thank you for the guide and the opinion.i have completed my build yesterday.im running it now and everything seems perfect but my gpu is not correctly recognized by Snow Leopard.:( i used a GT120 which was unplugged from a macpro last mounth.system profiler dedects it as gt9500.i didnt use any injecter or driver as its an original mac card.any ideas?

My configuration:
EX58-UD5
Core i7 920
GT120
2GB DDR3 1333mhz kinston
1TB WD

Actually Apple SUGGESTED (and collaborated with) Intel to create LightPeak, as stated by Intel itself...

And the demo of Lightpeak showed at IDF last year was on a modified MacPro logic board...

I guess Apple will be the FIRST to adopt LightPeak....and it's not 2 years away...

And I guess a 12-core/24-threads Gulftown MacPro is just a few weeks away.

This 4-core Cindori hackintosh is great and all, but this sentence was and remains false:

Cindori said:
But buying the next-gen Mac Pro releasing Q1 2010 would cost me like 3200$ where I would get the same specs as a cheap PC.

Could you provide a link to this?

Everything I've come across isn't quite that clear about Apple's involvement.

I guess Apple will be the FIRST to adopt LightPeak....and it's not 2 years away...
Parts won't be in the supply chain until the tail end of 2010, assuming there's no delays in either the evaluation phase or production. So systems should begin to show up in Q1 2011.

Thanks for the link. :) I was looking for something more definitive (i.e. at least the name of the source of the conversations), as other sources have the extent of Apple's involvement is controversial.

That said, they're certainly interested in it, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did ask Intel about a faster interface. I just don't know how deep they got into specifications and design, if at all (I suspect all the technical aspects resulted from Intel and the other partners that are producing components).

Sweet build! I just built my own i7-920 Hackintosh with similar components. Sold my old iMac and was on the verge of buying a Mac Pro but I didn't really think I was going to get enough value with the '09. No news about the update so I decided to try and build a hackintosh this time. Was expecting a battle but the whole thing was unbelievably easy. With SL and the right parts there is really no hacking included. Made an image of my retail-dvd, restored it on an USB stick, ran Kakewalk and pointed it at the stick and then just booted from it and installed SL the normal way. That's it! Everything updated through system update. Wouldn't believe it if I hadn't done it myself.

Here's my setup if anybody is interested (mobo + GPU are the deciding factors). Ignore the finnish and prices, just copy pasted from my receipt :)

Gainward 8800GT 512MB Golden Sample (I already had this). Would have probably went with the fan-less Gigabyte 9800GT had I needed to buy one.

Only thing I'm not happy about is not buying a G5 case and sticking it in there. The Lian-li is sweet but not really close to real thing. This is something I may end up replacing.
