To be perfectly honest I despise people like you. And you would be one of the first to cry out if you lost your job, that is if you even have one.

34,000 people losing their job is nothing to sniff or gloat at.

To be honest, I despise people that do not have a sense of humor.

CC closing is no big loss. Just like CompUsa closing was no big loss. CC is old and outdated. The stores in my location have horrible selection and horrible customer service.

I also despise companies like CC and wal-mart who pay their employes minimum wage with no benefits. Maybe losing a dead end job is a good thing.

You would be shocked to find out how many senior level highly educated folks who are currently out of work are now employed by Wal-Mart.

Its easy to make fun of these situations until the day you are handed your pink slip.

My daughter and I walked in tonight to our local Circuit City and as I said, they had their BluRay discs at 20%, but 20% off of $34.99 or even $29.99 is no deal. Hell, I bought From Hell at Best Buy this week for $14.99! They had it for $24.99, so 20% of of that is $5.00? No deal there. From what I understand the sale is going to go on until March...so it will probably be sometime until they get down and dirty and offer some real deals.

BUT!!!

My daughter did find a PC game called Pony LUV that was $19.99. The PC games are currently 10% off. When the lady at the register rang it up it came up to $1.66...well, NOW WE ARE TALKING!!! So, you may want to run some items up to the register, they may be cheaper than you think.

Hopefully this will open markets up for Fry's Electronics (those of you who live in California, Texas or las vegas know what I mean!).

They beat the smack out of Best Buy.

i wish, but i live in tigerdirect land, unlikely fry's will ever impede on south florida. tigerdirect is one of the worst when it comes to prices, they are almost as high as bb and cc and their shipping is high.

This closing might really be what pushes the US govt. to institute a national tax on items sold on the internet.

that's a great solution, tax the heck out of everything and put the economy into a worse state.

i would watch thing before i go to a circuit city

great video, summarizes alot of what we have been talking about on 'out of business' sales, not a good value.

i'm so glad best buy opened up near me last year. prior to that, the nearest bb was 1/2 hour away, and their prices are better compared to circuit city, which tended to have higher prices for no good reason. fyi, i do most of my shopping on the internet now.

In this economy, a job is a job and it doesn't matter where you earn your paycheck.

Went to Circuit City today, did not see any deals.

The TV's and movies seemed to be higher than normal price at other retailers.

But people were clearing of the shelves like no tomorrow, I guess the psychology of a sale makes people buy stuff.

Now I see why furniture stores always have fake going out of business sales.

Went to Best Buy afterwards and the prices were about the same.
If you want a great deal on electronics just shop online and hope for free shipping.

I'm in Tampa and could only wish for a Fry's, it'll never happen but we can always hope ;)

Actually Circuit City does sell a large number of Apple Computers, and has ever since CompUSA left the market. They were in the middle of rolling out a nationwide series of kiosks, but that was halted in September.

Also, I can tell you two reasons why it failed... Everything was overpriced, and they had commissioned sales people (which BB doesn't have, they get an hourly wage). It also doesn't help that the places were always do dark. Now the local chains will have to compete with BB only, it might make the whole enterprise fun to watch.

TEG

Two things - We havent sold Macs since the iMac came in colors. We were probably never going to again anyway.

Circuit City employees stopped being on commission in 2003-2004.

The old plug-store design has horrible lighting. The newer store designs all have so much lighting that I'd get a headache after a while from it. It was TOO bright.

I had a computer go belly-up on me the day before a business trip so I ran to the local Circuit City and bought a new one. A couple hours later, while setting it up, I noticed that the wifi didn't work at all and, shortly after that, it failed to even boot the BIOS. So back to Circuit City I went where I was told that sorry, I would have to send it to the manufacturer for repair, never mind it wasn't even a day old and that I had a piece of paper that said it could be exchanged at the store if I had a problem with it specifically because I needed it the next day. And that piece of paper wasn't cheap. Screw them, back out I went and after a 45 minute drive, I had a new one from Best Buy which still works just fine. That certainly wasn't my only problem with Circuit City, but it was the last and that was over two years ago. So while I feel badly for the thousands out of a job, I'll be damned if I'm going to shed a tear for that miserable cluster____ of a company and it's short-sighted management. They were the Linens N Things of electronics...even at 30% off it's overpriced crap. Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, there's a brand new Best Buy going up right now that will create more jobs than Circuit City destroyed. Good for them! Not that Best Buy is the best company in the world but when I took a DOA monitor back, they actually did exchange it in the store and I didn't even need the expensive paper.

Yeah..um don't expect any deals for a few weeks. Everything shot up to MSRP. Then 10% off that for like DSLRs and stuff is what I've been told.

I bet there aren't all that great of deals or there would be a higher demand. All Circuit City is trying to do is get rid of everything they can for the highest price possible by a certain deadline. They aren't aiming for everything to be gone for tomorrow. It will probably be weeks before they can sell much at all.

I just went to my local Circuit City to see what they had. 10% off of items that are at least 10% higher than everywhere else. It's a joke.

And yet, it worked. Everyone there just hears "discount", and they automatically think it's a good deal. It was a madhouse. The only good deal is for video games, since they're usually the same price everywhere with the exception of sales.

I went through this when CompUSA closed - Gordon Brothers was our liquidator, and the "sales" were crap, but people just heard "clearance sale" and started buying....

One thing about it is the idea that "I'd better buy this NOW at 15% off, because it may not last until we hit a reasonable 30-50% off."

The employees, for the most part, don't get much of a deal either - there were like 3 or 4 days out of a 3 month timeframe where we got an extra 15% off...no telling what CC employees will get....

I got a killer deal on 1600 MS Points. I asked the first guy (whom was just wearing a hoodie with his CC shirt barely visible) how much games/accessories were and he said 10% off games and 30% off accessories, so I followed that up with what are Microsoft Points and he says those are only 10%. As he walked away another girl came up and I asked her if the points were 30% off and she was like yeah whatever just let me ring you out. I grabbed the remaining 5 1600 Point cards and was more than happy to walk out of that store and never go back. They also only had 3 iPods left, all Nanos, and they were only 10% off as well as all iPod accessories. No deals there!

That's so funny. They compared the same TV that I am looking to buy, but it was much cheaper today. The PN50A550, at my local CC, it was 1499.99, with 10% off making it $1350. Most internet stores are selling them for $1500ish shipped.

I'm still saving the $ though, so the savings weren't great enough to hold a debt for a small savings.

Sale is a joke. 10% most of the stuff with 30% some stuff..... like computer cables. :D Wasted my time going. Oh well! Don't bother going.

that's the way any liquidation sale works. At first the sales prices are measly, then they get better, but by the time they get better all the good stuuf is gone. I did pick up season 3 and 4 of House today though. Saved $10 on each of them, it's not a great deal but it's better then full price.

Personally I hate CC, and I think it's a good thing that it's going to close (although I do feel bead for the employees), hopefully this will help BestBuy out a bit. At least the employees at BestBuy aren't total idiots (most of the time).

Ha, I just remembered I got my first computer at CC when I was 4. It was POS Compaq, that died on me two years after I got it. It's still in the basement, with all of it's pentium II, 6GB HDD glory.:D I fought my dad like hell to get me a tangerine iMac G3 (I liked it because it was colorful). He said no, because Macs only have one mouse button.

While I'm not celebrating the demise of any company right now, Circuit City kinda lost me on their Blu-ray prices. They almost never ran sales, whereas Best Buy, Target and Fry's all had sales weekly. Those three stores also had lower everyday prices on most of the BDs, while Circuit City's were mostly $30-35 per disc. I never saw any for $25 or $20.

One thing I must say is maybe if their receipts weren't 15 feet long for a pack of bubble gum, they could've saved a little bit of money.

hhgregg is a good competitor to Best Buy and others on electronics and appliances. It moved into the Atlanta area a few years ago and the stores are really nice and the prices seem competitive.

As far as movies, computers and such, Internet sales probably started to kill CC. I buy almost all (if not 100%) of my music online, and I usually buy movies and TV shows at either Amazon, Best Buy or Target. BB & Target are within 5 minutes of me, while the closest CC store was 20 minutes away.

Basically, I think new competitors and lack of innovation and branding killed CC. I'm not saying that Best Buy is some hip, ultra-cool place to go, but I always liked their ads better and I didn't have to hunt for a register in their stores. Oh yeah, they also started selling Mac-related products, so they're OK in my book.
