Claimed iPhone 5 dock connector and cable (Source: Apple.pro)
Taiwanese site Apple.pro today posted a photo [Google translation] claimed to be of the dock connector and cable for the next-generation iPhone. The part is nearly identical to the corresponding part found in the current iPhone, with the main exception of a slightly narrower connector and cable where the part connects to the device's main board. The connector carries a part number of 821-1300-02, compared to 821-1281-A for the Verizon iPhone and 821-1093-A for the original iPhone 4.

It may also be somewhat notable that this part exists in the first place, if it is indeed legitimate, as it would confirm that Apple is continuing to use the dock connector on the next-generation iPhone rather than shifting entirely to a different standard. The European Commission recently implemented a micro-USB universal charger standard, leading to some speculation that Apple would have to include such a port in addition to or instead of the existing dock connector, but Apple can meet the new requirements by simply including a dock connector to micro-USB adapter.

It is not entirely clear from the automated translation of today's post, but the author also seems to assert that the recently-claimed larger screen for the iPhone 5 is indeed a fake, possibly claiming knowledge of a four-inch screen only in a slider form factor previously rumored by the site.

We continue to have a hard time believing that Apple is planning to release an iPhone with slide-out keyboard, but it is certainly possible that the company has developed internal prototypes simply to assess its options. Apple.pro has, however, posted legitimate photos of a number of parts for unreleased Apple products in the past, most recently with a small touchscreen revealed last July that ended up in the new iPod nano a few months later, supporting claims of authenticity of the new photo.

ipod, ipad, iphone users have accessories with dock connectors.

because of that, apple cannot drop the dock connector

I wish everyone would quit stating that Apple has to add a micro-USB port. The agreement (that Apple was a part of most likely so they could continue to use the current dock connector) states that you can use any connector to the device, but you have to offer a converter. All Apple has to do is provide a iPod to micro-USB "dongle" and they are done.

Why even bring up the stupid "requirement" (which isn't a requirement) of having a micro-USB port?!?!

The whole EU dock connector to mini-usb thing is quite silly.

Hoping to see Thunderbolt but probably won't see it until iPhone comes with fast SSD.

Wouldn't the thunderbolt connector be thicker than the thickness of the iphone? seriously unless they create some kind of micro-thunderbolt connector, I don't think you will see it any time soon.

the SAME connector? NO WAI!!!!!! Man, where's the innovation in that! Reusing ports so people don't have to buy new iAdapters from Apple? Man, they really are slipping! :p

Sorry.. such a silly thread, so I had to be clown. :D

Since we don't know how small Thunderbolt controllers are yet in peripheral devices, do we even know if it is possible yet to stuff a Thunderbolt controller in the iPhone? I know that the controller in the new MBPs is awfully huge in size.

They've changed the pin-out of the 30-pin connector before. Nothing really stopping them from moving forward. Accessory manufacturers will catch up and people will buy new accessories...

The biggest point is: Changing it doesn't affect your old device. Your old device will continue to work just fine.

How exactly? The whole point is so everyone is using the same charger, not the same port. The same port on every phone would merely be a result of requiring the same charging cable. Requiring a dongle is missing the point completely.

The point was that they didn't want to have power supplies filling our landfills. An iPod connector to Micro-USB "dongle" could be nothing more than a 1" by 1.5" adapter. That's a lot less waste than a whole wall charger.

It isn't missing the point completely. Completely would imply there would be no way to change the device with a USB charger. We already know this not to be the case with an iPhone.

Completely - definition provided by merriam webster - total, absolute

You sir are mis-using completely.

if ya havent had apple change something to turn your accessories into expensive chargers, ya havent had ipods long enough

The EU missing the point? thats unpossible...

I'm sorry Mac Rumours but I'm really struggling to see why you bothered posting this story? Wow the port is nearly identical stop the front pages! Yeah, so, and..............

Oh I suppose we should thank you for at LAST acknowledging that 4" screen you posted is a fake. Because you ignored the hundreds of posts telling that??

Apple hasn't had an iPod with firewire for syncing (which is what I am assuming you are referring to), since 2005. At some point, ports are going to change are they not? I'm not apologizing for Apple, I'm just pointing out that I don't see many serial / parallel / game ports on PC's anymore!

The post seem highly suspicious to me. Probably the photo is the only thing that is worthy of considering.

The author mentioned Sidekick-style slide out keyboard on the iPhone 5, and glassless 3D which he says will be on the iPhone but not iPhone 5.

Both of these are just unbelievable to me. Seems to me that he is just rambling.
