Late to the party as always—but: I agree this is not an iPhone. It's probably for some Chinese knockoff. On the subject of the mirrored area on the bottom, though: that's definitely a camera lens. The (rear-facing) camera on my cheap Samsung slider-phone has a mirror-surface looking in. You center your face in the mirror, and your face is automatically centered in the camera. A front-facing camera would need the same thing, at least for video conferencing, because you're not going to be looking at yourself on the screen, you're going to be looking at whoever you're talking to.

What's the use for a taller form factor if there's no difference in screen size?

More room for suspected features such as:
  • front-facing camera
  • better back camera
  • flash for back camera
  • CDMA radio & antennae
  • LTE radio & antennae
  • NFC radio & antennae
  • WLAN n MIMO antennae
  • bigger battery
Furthermore, judging from the photos, it's just a few millimetres. You can't even reasonably measure this in obsolete units such as "inch".

Then, it could be thinner, resulting in less total volume.

Not to demean your position, but can I ask why? Remember that same size does not necessarily mean the same screen.

Fair point i forgot about that. I mean if the resolution/screen size stays the same as well as the design plus the fact that the 3GS will be getting OS 4.0 then there isn't any real reason for me to upgrade from my 3GS is there?

  • I would love these to be available.

Res bump hopefully, although that's not necessarily related.

Regardless, I'll be retiring my trusty (by then) 2 y/o 3G for the next one in July, hopefully a 64gigger.

Great, just got a new snug case for my iPhone and it won't fit this new potential model. I'll believe it when I see it.

Real or Fake

OK - I'm not going to say if it's real or fake coz, hey - I don't know!

However, I agree with some of the people here who think that if this is the new iPhone then the glass is bigger to allow for an edge to edge design like the new iMac and hey, even the Magic mouse has an edge to edge style top, so this is definitely in apples design language at the moment.

Making the glass edge to edge would mean that the iPhone would not physically be any larger, just means the bezel would be removed or would be much smaller like the iPad.

I would imagine they would go back to the Aluminium back too - I have the original iPhone 2G and the back is sooo much nicer than the cheap plastic in the 3G and 3Gs, it also does not rock on your desk when you press the home button! Once again looking at the design language of Apples other products they all have metal and glass - again, even the magic mouse. And for all those people who say the original back caused dropped calls and a weaker signal - I honestly have had no issues with it - in fact [whispers], I think they changed it to plastic to make the iPhone cheaper to produce and they sold this change in to customers by saying it was to help the radio signal.

As far as the reflective bit is concerned, well that area of the phone is where the light and prox sensors go at the moment, if you look at your phone in very bright sunlight you can see them. Perhaps they are going to be mounting the sensors on the board instead of the back of the glass and this could just be a small removable metal sticker to keep the area clean before assembly.

One last thing - I know people keep going on about a front facing camera on the iPhone, but I'm not sure the current phone networks could handle all the extra data that video chat would generate. They are having a job keeping up with the over air internet access as it is!

I pray to God that the next iPhone would not look like that. This design is 3 years old and is outdated. The iPhone now looks like crap when put next to the Nexus 1 or the newest HTC phone.

Maybe the next iphone will have edge to edge glass... just like the MacBook.

I'm not sure about that. The aluminum bezel protects the glass edge from chipping (think of coins or keys in your pocket along with the phone.) It also absorbs the energy from a sideways hit by deforming into the 0.5mm air gap between itself and the glass. If the glass took that impact directly it would break. (You'll notice the MacBook has the same thin protective aluminum bezel and air gap too)

Unless they're thinking of some sort of super tough ceramic - like Rado watches? Cost might rule that out and, anyways, I'm not even sure if it's possible to have glass-clear ceramic.

What exactly do you wish to change about the minimalistic look of the front of the device?

THIS is what I expect to see in the new iPhone. Forget about all the BS specs listed next to the mock up, just look at the design; Its awesome.

- If the new iPhone looks the same as it does now with minor cosmetic changes I won't buy it.

Damn, that is nice!

I sure hope they don't change the size. I just got me Tom Tom Car Kit!

I just bought one too. Love it! So much so I'm buying one for the wife.

... although I might hold off now until there's some hard news on the 2010 iPhone's dimensions (was planning to upgrade this summer)

Wonder if this rumor is hurting car kit sales?

I agree, this is seriously hot!
Im hoping for a TMOB addition.. If not ill stick to my unlocked 3GS, until I can find a *friend* to put me on their plan!
lol

I sure hope this is not the next iPhone, after recieveing a TomTom Car Kit for Christmas, I will NOT be happy if the next iPhone doesn't fit in it, rendering the £100 car kit useless!

Skeptical

Could be an optical illusion with a combination of camera angle and staggering the devices every so slightly and the reflective part photo shopped in. In the first picture...look at the bottom of the devices...the one on the right seems to be slightly higher than the one on the left...and if you look at where the black out stops and the actual screen begins...again it's slightly higher on the right than the left...and it appears that there is the same amount of space between the ear piece and the top of the device...I don't know...just seems fishy to me...of course all of that is IMO. If the 4th Gen has a higher MP camera on the back and a front facing camera...I'll get it...but I'm an iPhone junkie...I've gotten all three previous generations the day they were available.

Speak for AT&T, European Networks and Pacific networks are having no trouble.

Hasn't this already been mentioned?
