Quite frankly, just because. I would probably never use it, but just because. In case. I want the iphone to be like the Turtle Com from TMNT. It would be much more useful on the iPad since the screen is bigger and you wont necessarily be moving around when using it, but I suppose I mostly want it just because it would mean that maybe it is coming to the iPad. So yeah, no real good reason.

Front facing camera would be good for self portraits which I also would not do much of. I guess I am not making a very convincing argument here.

I also dont want another hole on the front. I would prefer that embedded camera in the screen technology to come to fruition first.

Front facing camera = stupid IMO unless it's free and takes up no space. Cmon, how often do you even use the one that's in your Mac? It's fun to see far off nieces and nephews every once in a while, but I don't see it being usefull at all on a cellphone. Video chat? really? It's cool, but not practical.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has actually used a hand-held device for video conferencing. I think the experience on the other end would be like being forced to watch Blair Witch.
Think about it... you need to hold the phone perfectly still and KEEP it focused on yourself, otherwise you get frequent goofy shoe/ceiling shots.
Yet another geek wet dream with no thoughts of actual usability.

I would use it a lot more precisely because it is portable and with me all the time - why call my wife on her iphone when i can launch an ichat app?

They want to keep the accessory side of the iphone alive. You'll have to buy another protective case yet again, and be charged 20 bucks for a 25 cent piece of crapola.

IR=extremely low end universal remote that requires you to point your phone at each piece of equipment in turn, thus eliminating the possibility of macros.

Actually, No!

Woz, created a device in the 1980'S at his Cloud 9 company. The device would attach to a remote control and intercept and rebroadcast the IR signal: amplified and multi directional. You could point the remote in any direction (even 180º away from the device) and the remote would work.

I can't remember the device's name (Zap, or somesuch?) but we had several of them in our extended family.

Later, Cloud 9 came out with The Core remote control that included the same IR amplification and multi-directional capability. The Core was an Apple IIc computer in handheld format (about the size of a TV remote).

It was programmable and an extremely high-end universal remote control.

I see no reason why the iPhone or iPod Touch couldn't take advantage of this "old" technology to provide remote control for all our devices without using any intermediate devices (as the Wii does).

okay, for the people who want the next iphone to be made of aluminum or some metal...im sorry, its not going to happen.

aluminum interferes with the 3g signal...which is why the iPad 3g version has a plastic strip across the back...
which would look ugly on a phone...

there is a reason why the 1st gen iphone was half metal and half plastic...and why the 3g model was all plastic.

sorry but if you want an aluminum iphone, you will have to buy the original .

What exactly do you wish to change about the minimalistic look of the front of the device?

Aluminum maybe? I dunno, they are the experts, but we have 3 generations of the same design and now an ipad. Just give me something new. I mean what exactly does Jonathan Ives do all day? Even Coke changed their can design...

I saw Jonny Ive doing a q&a after a screening of the film objectified. To quote him, 'Good design is about less design'. The iPhone is already near perfect, there is no point of changing/adding something for the sake.

Realistically the only things that could potentially change would be the back casing (maybe thinner) and the bezel, so I wouldn't wish for anything more. Any drastic changes are going to be internal.

Think about the square iPod mini, silly idea and only lasted a generation.

That's my view anyway.

It would be pretty easy to catch up to the competitors while retaining the iPhone's iconic form factor: get rid of the huge bezel. Look at HTC's HD2 - no wasted space there. Now look at the iPhone - suddenly, the front is starting to show its age.
I was very satisfied with the 3GS-update, but I was nonetheless disappointed that they didn't put in a better screen. In the past few months, other manufacturers have easily outpaced the iPhone in terms of screen quality, while they had trouble matching its other strengths. Thus, the screen is truly the iPhone's weakest link and must be receive a significant upgrade.

Anyone knows about power consumption of displays?
how energy efficient are higher resolution displays?
is the energy consumption primary per pixel or per inch?

hmm... i really would be surprised if this is the new iPhone, seems strange for them to make it bigger, Apple usually goes for thinner and smaller.

That's exactly why it should be there. It will end up being novelty to most people- but it will be a feature to use once in a while to see someone's face, or video chat with your kids while you are away on a trip.

It will not bring down a data network, because it will not be used all the time. The average person will say "Oh neat- I can see you" and go back to texting. But it is a "whiz-bang" feature that will give more people a reason to buy it,a nod the cool factor is enough of a selling point, I think.

Is your only reason for it not happening is that the plastic strip for the signal to go through is ugly?? If so, that's not a good reason. I don't think it would be ugly.

I call complete B.S. on this.

Where does a repair company in Kansas get their hands on the next iPhone? Implausible.

They are shamelessly gunning for publicity. Too bad Macrumors has enabled them :(

Fake. Fake. And... fake.

Why are we even talking about this fake? It makes no sense that this company would have any access to the next iphone. And if they did, why would they admit it, considering apple would never deal with them again. Analyzing the details of this fake demeans us all.
