The 4S is the 5th Generation iPhone. Not the "iPhone 5." The 6th Generation iPhone could be called iPhone 5, however, I do not believe it will. It will probably be called iPhone.
Kind of like the iPod touch or Nano. Which did not have numbers following.

But you said the 4 stood for 4th generation. So what does 4 the stand for now in the "5th generation" phone??

Why look for logic in these things who cares what they call it, if you turn out to be right who's going to care? For the record I'm going for "the New iPhone" at least that would put an end the these discussions!

Reminds me of Curb:
"GTS? GTS stands for Guaranteed Tremendous Safety." "Does that mean the GT stands for just Guaranteed Tremendous?"

Here we go again.

It's not just about reducing the size of one part. It's about reducing the size of many components which add up to a substantial savings. The gained space can be used to make the handset thinner or can be reallocated for other things. Examples would be more battery capacity, a larger camera module, larger speakers.

I'm glad you're not a rocket scientist or neurologist. "A millimeter doesn't matter" attitude would send the Mars Rover to Saturn or kill a patient.

:) :p :D

But the one part isn't any smaller really. They don't need the thick borders around it. It could be much smaller.

And for future reference, I interned at CERN over the summer. So I think I appreciate how important a mm is.

Darn it lol. Instead of cutting my SIM card like I did for my iPhone 4, I'll have to wait for Tmobile USA to get their hands on such nano-SIM cards so that I may use an unlocked iPhone-whatever-its-called...

How exactly is Apple taking advantage of the Space with this Nano SIM card?

I'm not a fan because now I can swap it with my other Super Phones that uses micro SIM cards.

But then what do you call the next one? The "new new iPhone"? And then in 5 years, i'd order a "new new new new new new iPhone"?

Yeah, because we are so used to seeing the "new new new new new new new new new Camry" on the roads today. It would just be the new iPhone again after that and again after that...does anybody understand the meaning of the word "new"?
