Why would the 6th generation iPhone be called the iPhone 5?

You'll get over it.

Seriously, of all the things to get bothered about, you choose the number that comes after the name of the phone? Will it make any difference in the functionality of the phone?

I know, I expect they'll drop the number, if they don't it will be iPhone 5. Sales logic > Nerd logic.

Yep, the same happened with Windows...not counting special editions or server editions:

1. Windows 1
2. Windows 2
3. Windows 3.1 / 3.11
4. Windows 95
5. Windows 98
6. Windows ME
7. Windows 2000
8. Windows XP
9. Windows Vista
10. Windows 7
12. Windows 8

This also doesnt take into account the fact that they have Windows Mobile/CE, Phone 7, Windows RT, Windows Embedded, etc

Where the hell they got the idea that Windows 7 was actually the 7th release I dont know. I assume it was from it's Windows NT base, however even that doesnt stack up as the first release of NT was version 3.1.

It's obviously all marketing crap to sell it as 'the new version and better than the old one'.

So why did 4 come after 3GS?

Because 4 comes after 3.

First iPhone = no number
Second iPhone = 3G to emphasize network
Third iPhone = 3GS to show speed bump, but minor overall change
Fourth iPhone = 4 comes after three
Fifth iPhone = 4S to show minor upgrade
Sixth iPhone = ??? Generally we call it the 5 for simplicity. If you call it the iPhone 6, most people (ie, people not on Mac forums) will wonder what happened to the iPhone 5.

The 4S is the 5th Generation iPhone.

I'm driving down the highway.... I pass by exit 48. The next exit is 48A. So, what should the exit after 48A be called? Exit 49 or exit 50?

The iPhone 6 people are thinking we should 'skip' exit 49 altogether, as they want to 'skip' iPhone 5 altogether.

You're trying to find some logic to product nomenclature when I just proved it's all nonsense. So stop trying to find some logical answer.

Plus, even the official bio of Jobs explained that they fly by the seat of their pants on naming. There is no road or system. Just whatever seems right.

Although I suspect they will just call it "iPhone" from here on out. And this year it will be referred to as the new iPhone. And in subsequent years, just iPhone (x generation).

They shall name it 'New iPhone' much like the 'New iPad'

I may very well be wrong, but I personally think they will keep with some designation after the 'iPhone'. Apple (and phone carriers) actively sell more than one/two version of the iPhone at a given time. (iPhone 4s, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS) removing the name would become confusing to people shopping in a Verizon/ATT/other carrier/Walmart/best buy/etc... store. I have the confidence in Apple's staff at their own stores to make the distinction but not so much through other channels.

I realize Apple sells 2 iPads (New iPad and iPad2) but I suspect that is a transitional step and at some point they will move on to just selling one version again. which would be (relatively) easy for Apple to do. However Apple will want to always keep more than one or two iPhones on the market at a given time.

Anyhow, thats' my uninformed theory.

But then what do you call the next one? The "new new iPhone"? And then in 5 years, i'd order a "new new new new new new iPhone"?

b/c it's not called the "new iPad" or "new iPhone." it's "iPad" and "iPhone". The new signifies that it is the newer model. It is not part of the actual product name.

What happen when they marketed the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and jumped from the first iPhone?

I personally don't care what the name the Apple marketing team names their iPhone or products.

People that discuss this issue can be divided in 2 groups

1. Marketist
2. Gerenationist

I'm the the later, and yes I see why some people would want to have a reason for the naming in a different way than the generation. Its what Apple named their products, they want a reason and speculation for the naming of the next product. But that will always be changing...

The room for doubt gets ever smaller. Now we just wait for the converts who always loved it when Tim debuts it.

The only people that need to worry about this are people who only buy unlocked. If you buy one sold for your carrier, it will come with a 4G nano SIM pre-installed.
I'm going to have this problem. I had the original 2G iPhone with a pre-paid unlimited data account and SIM. When I bought an unlocked 4S, I trimmed down my SIM card to use with the 4S.

Since my account is grand fathered unlimited data and pre-paid I doubt if I go into an AT&T store and request a ultra LTE SIM card and then ask them to transfer my account they will do it. And unlike the post paid account management where you can change your account to a different IMEI SIM card number, I don't see that any where in the pre-paid account management website.

Who else finds it boring to read macrumors only to find a bunch of kids fighting over the name of the phone IN EVERY SINGLE THREAD. We get it, you can count to six. WELL DONE YOU!!!! GOLD FKN STAR!!!!

Mate every rumour is important.

Where's there phone?¿ I don't think anybody cares about a sim card tray.

Uncle Ruckus no relations.

If you follow up on MacRumors you will know what the new iPhone looks like even on the home page there a predicted photo of the new iPhone appreciate the efforts of the people that upload these rumours. :D and by the way some people do care about the sim tray it means a lot to people that know anything about cellular tecnology.:D:D:D

Why is it called iPhone 5? Doesn't make sense. Why.

Because people are lazy, and they find comfort in thinking that this will follow the same pattern as 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5T, 6, 6FO, etc etc.

And also cause people expected at redesign with the 4S, that new phone redesigned is what is called the iPhone 5, even though is Generation 6 using iOS 6.

ATT did let me move my grandfathered unlimited data iPad from 3G to unlimited data LTE. If they allow this for the iPhone I will be surprised.

Can't everybody just shut the ****** up about iPhone 4SS, 5, 6, XXL, or whatever.

Nope, people will never shut up .. in fact, two weeks after the release of the <whatever is next>iPhone people will start looking out for parts of the iPhone 7.23 ....
