It's super high-gloss black! haha

WTF is with companies making stuff with this **** finish? One big name does it, everyone has to follow suit.

I'm glad Sony changed their tune with the PS3 slim.

Looks like the clamcase holds the iPad screen horizontally. Isn't the default portrait? Hardly Ideal, especially if your app doesn't support screen rotation.

new apple laptop

The interesting idea: why don't make a laptop with a touchscreen like an iPad? You get a real keyboard, trackpad, interfaces (USB, firewire, card slot) plus a touchscreen plus a revolutionary UI (like the iPad).
What did the hardware vendors do in the past? They have been scaling down the ordinary computers from workstation, desktop and laptop to netbook. Apple is going the ther way: they introduced the iPhone together with a new UI, and with the iPad they are now scaling up. In fact the size of a netbook and an iPad is the same - the difference is the UI - in fact the UI is a revolution, a paradigm change.

What is the next step? My suggestion: use the new UI from the iPad and apply it to a laptop. Result: a powerful Macbook, eays to use even for ordinary people. What do you think?

This is pointless.

iPad was not designed to be a laptop.

If a person wants a laptop then they should just get a laptop.

If they dont like the iPad for what it is, or dont have a use for the it, then dont buy an iPad.... why buy it and then convert it into something else??

So stupid.

Some people still seem to be having trouble grasping the whole tablet concept.

Between trying to back pedal the iPad into a laptop with this clamcase abomination, or to take it even further back in computer history by turning the iPad into a desktop computer with a wall mount, there definitely seems to be a lack of vision about how the iPad will carry computing into the future. (What's next? A giant metal cabinet to turn the iPad into a mainframe computer?)

It's like 1910 rolls around and you decide to add a horse compartment to your fancy new automobile, or perhaps an 8-track slot to your iPod - - time marches on. Let it go, people!

Read Old World vs. New World Computers and take a step towards the future - - ya know: boldly go where no man has gone before, and all that...

I love how apple tells its consumers what they should want, and then other companies step in and try to make that product into what consumers asked for in the first place..

Seriously in all the hate comments about the iPad I dont recall a single post asking for a a keyboard to have been integrated into the iPad.

I really do not see the point of this other than for people say they have an iPad for the "cool" factor but they actually wanted a netbook/laptop.

But each to their own - buy it if you like it...

Why not just get a laptop?

Exactly. The iPad is a content consumption device. They can try to make it into a content creation device (or even just an adequate text entry device) by all kinds of kludgy means. But then why not get a laptop? Maybe it's because Apple is trying to slowly strangle OS X.

I rather like that. Can imagine it (or the base at least) being quite heavy though, it'd have to be to offset the weight of the iPad itself.
Still it's not a real computer so I have no reason to get it. But if I did have an iPad I'd get that.

seems like it would be top-heavy.

arn

Good point. Open it up. Type something. Oh now you need to poke the screen. Poke screen. Whole thing falls over backwards.

I suppose you would need to hold the keyboard down with one hand while poking the screen.

And opening the screen past 90' might make it fall over anyway.

Unless they sell it with lead weights under the palm rests. Which they might do. (Can't really see an option for putting an external long-life battery under there, but people have done it with the iPhone).

Sure;y that base has to be really heavy for that to work? Normal laptops work as all the guts are in the base, this is just silly.

there're many ways to screw the sleek design of iPad and ClamCase is obviously the expert!

I think it is a pretty cool idea. If you want to use it as a laptop sometimes, just use this case!!! In some situation would be better to have it on this case and type on a keyboard.

I hope it doesn't costs too much, i would love to buy one.

If it ran full Mac OS X and had a couple of USB ports, it would be what the iPad should've been - a 10" MacBook Air, ie. netbook.

In the meantime, I'm waiting for a third party to use the iPhone dock connector to add a larger screen and battery pack. The result is a humble iPad without having to buy a 2nd data plan. (I probably wouldn't buy one, but it makes more sense to a consumer - not as good for Apple or AT&T than selling the same thing twice as they are now though, obviously.)

It's nice to see Macrumors members are again opposing choice.

For my part, I think someone finally made the iPad just a little bit useful. Now at least you won't need to carry 50 accessories in your backpack in order to use iWork on it.

Still, I'm not swapping my laptop for one either way.

Opposed to choice or just confused about backwards, retarded design!?

Pic has to be a render...and a badly thought out one at that....why would you put the keys so close to the "hinge" and not out more towards the outer edge? Seems like your hands would be blocking the screen when you type. If that's what the final product looks like, they get an A for the idea, but a D for execution.

Fixed that for you.

Fixed up the number of accessories as well - the clamshell replaces the keyboard dock (though not really as the keyboard dock is a portrait accessory).

I am glad that you have read all the info from Apple saying it isnt a laptop replacement and have then made the informed choice not to replace your laptop. Just think how disappointed you would be if you ignorantly chose to replace a laptop with something that is not intended to be a laptop replacement. That would be like replacing a wrench with a screwdriver - both can be used for home improvements - but neither is meant to be doing the job of the other. It is nice to see you are on board with Apple on this :)

Anybody with some mad photochop skillz and a couple of minutes who would be able to put together a demo pic of my hot new product idea? (I'll split the profits with you!)

{Please excuse the self quote.}
