I love how apple tells its consumers what they should want, and then other companies step in and try to make that product into what consumers asked for in the first place.

Millions of us we're desperately trying to tell Apple they should make a laptop finally. Now it's here.

I don'se the point. I like this more:

Here's my final comment...

I bet you this is a test market product and I doubt it will ever be made. If the response is good, they may move forward. But it doesn't look to good for "Clamcase".

Snl?

Seriously, is this a Saturday Night Live commercial?

On a side note, probably not a bad idea for some users. It would be nice if they integrated an additional battery with all the space this thing takes up. That would justify the extra bulk I would think.

What exactly did consumers ask for? I don't recall them asking for anything in particular, or any company delivering what they "asked for."

Apple showed them something, and they responded by getting in line.

I believe (from looking around this forum) that people wanted a tablet OSX computer. There was so much demand that another manufacturer (well, modding company) modified Macbooks to do just that.

It would also make your iPad as heavy as a real laptop. The beauty of the iPad is the form factor. People won't "get it" until they own one and carry it around. The small size and lightweight is great. It's so nice to carry around outside the house. I don't think I would use this Clam Case outside the house. I might use if for writing a novel on the couch. LOL.

A case with a keyboard built in is a neat concept... until you do it and find out that it looks just like a laptop... big and bulky. If there were a way to make a case with a keyboard where the case was no thicker than the Apple iPad case... WOW! But I'm not sure that's possible.

This is not a laptop...

Why not get a laptop? iPad has a different OS to any laptop. It has completely different apps. It has GPS. It has an accelerometer. Oh, and it has a touch screen. I would love this product for the few times that I want to type extensively for a long time while on the go. Then I could take it out of it's case to play a driving game, get directions, read a comic etc. etc. Best of both worlds. Don't people like choice?

This is the coolest stupid idea.

I guess it's good for those people that can"t give up the idea of having a laptop, but I think the keyboard with stand is a better idea for keyboard entry on the iPad. The stand is also smaller and easier to deal with.

Good point. Open it up. Type something. Oh now you need to poke the screen. Poke screen. Whole thing falls over backwards.

I suppose you would need to hold the keyboard down with one hand while poking the screen.

And opening the screen past 90' might make it fall over anyway.

Unless they sell it with lead weights under the palm rests. Which they might do. (Can't really see an option for putting an external long-life battery under there, but people have done it with the iPhone).

if they don't add a battery or superflous lead weight, they could just move the hinge point inward from the back edge leaving effectivle a small foot either side and rear of the pivot point, the bigger the step in for the hinge the further you could open the clam or harder you can poke screen without tipping it up.

all seems fine as an idea but you really do have to think is this really a product I want? you are really getting an apple netbook with serious limitations, I think you can forgive ipad certain flaws in lieu of what it does better, but this kind of takes away the smaller, simpler, rotatey, hands on experience, large pocketable aspect and just leaves you with a crippled net book doesn't it?

It appears that this design won't be prone to overheating as a typical notebook computer is– unless it is backed up against the covers on the bed.;)

What a bunch of vision-less folks here.
Hey why make a 13" laptop-the 17" shows more, and a 15" is just silly!
why make iTouch with different memory sizes, and what is up with all those silly colors on the iPads, give me a break, black is good enough.

Just because YOU don't see a use for this device doesn't mean it isn't the perfect item from ME.

I could see this just fine, and for the design guys saying the keyboard on the back would be a problem-make a switch in the hinge-duh.
With extra battery power, and a cd rom, hdmi out and other items this might actually make me want an iPad.

This is really no different than a dock for a laptop that made it a desktop.

Some here need a bit of creativity. Can't wait to see more great ideas like this one.

What idiots! What a mook! What morons! What a maroon!!!!

These dips should be thwapped on the back of the head for eternity by some sort of Grant Imahara original.

How could they be so stupid to overlook something so simple that I can see it from HERE without ever having used it?!

When you flip the lid back all the way, the keyboard is facing out!! This means if you flip the lid up past 180º to display the iPad screen frontmost, the keyboard will be touching the surface of whatever it is sitting on! Not only that, if you flip it back to use the iPad screen in your hands, the hand that you're holding the iPad with goes where? Guess? Take a wild ****ing guess!! All across the keys!!!!!

Every time somebody is blinded by their own tunnel vision and ****s up in such a way that I can see the seams from lightyears away, it makes me wonder how much money I could have made in my lifetime doing exactly that! Jumping down people's throats for **** moronic **** ups!

I think this is a dumb idea and would never buy one, but I would imagine thatntheynwould design it so that when you flip the back lid the keyboard would then become inoperable to prevent accidentally hitting the keys being an issue.

Seriously in all the hate comments about the iPad I dont recall a single post asking for a a keyboard to have been integrated into the iPad.

I really do not see the point of this other than for people say they have an iPad for the "cool" factor but they actually wanted a netbook/laptop.

But each to their own - buy it if you like it...

People were asking for two products: an Apple sub-notebook or netbook and an Apple tablet with OS X and full touch support. We got the MacBook Air with a 13" screen and 3 hr battery life and the iPad with a phone OS. I do like what the iPad has to offer out of the gate, but it will take a few more iterations before it will be usable for content creation instead of just media consumption, before it's usable as a stand-alone computer.

It doesn't matter, mashing the keys all day with our grubby greasy hands will not offer well for such a..."quality" device.

Fail+

Wow - - I think that's the first time anybody's linked to that site in an iPad discussion thread here at MacRumors!

I'm going to buy a clamshell and then I'm going to buy another iPad so I don't have to carry the clamshell around with me... :D

Now that's funny!

(Thanx for the belly laugh.)

I love it how many idiots insist on staying in the past and refuse to just LOOK at a new product and evaluate it on its own merits.

Really? I state a personal opinion on an Apple rumor site, an opinion which you happen to not agree with, and you brand me as an "idiot." Seriously? You should work on improving your rhetoric if you ever want to engage in a productive discussion, though it seems that wasn't your intent. There's no need to try to put people down.

This looks like a great idea. For me, the Clamcase design would provide MacBook Air portability without a nearly $2000 price tag. I won't be diving into the iPad owner's club for at least a while, but some positive reviews from people who buy this case would eventually make me strongly consider getting one. I need something to use for dictations, lecture notes, and nothing else.
