I think this kind of missed the point - It is a question of taste - there is no absolute answer. Clearly this type of buckle has origins in female strap designs, but Apple will never state formally that it was designed for women. My opinion is that the buckle, combined with the black strap, is sufficiently modern in design that it could easily be worn by a man, but then again I've not seen one in person yet.

I bet more people will agree it's a feminine band once they see it in person. There were a significant number of responders who weren't sure and needed to see it in person. The stock photos don't do justice in illustrating how large the clasp is (like the real life photos I posted earlier).

I guess what bothers me is that there is no good male-orientated (if you agree the modern buckle is feminine) 'modern' leather strap option (like the leather loop) for the 38mm watch.

I'm just educating some members who might otherwise not be aware. I didn't realize either that it was a feminine band until I saw additional photos at different angles. It's not immediately apparent how large and feminine the clasp is from the stock photos.

Again, why bother? People will soon see it in person and decide for themselves if it is too feminine for them or not. Who knows, YOU might see it in person and decide that the stock picture is more representative of the buckle than those pictures from other angles. And even if it does turn out to be too feminine for most guys, I think those of us who are preordering bands sight unseen know that we are taking a risk that the band won't be what we expect, and we may have to return/exchange them. I just feel it is somewhat condescending of you to be "educating" the rest of us. It is great that you share your opinion that the modern buckle is feminine, but you come off as saying that anyone who doesn't think so is wrong -- and whether something is feminine or not isn't a matter of right or wrong. It's a matter of taste, and may vary from culture to culture and individual to individual.

Yeah, I'm a woman, and *I'd* like a leather loop option for the 38mm watch, as I like leather watch bands, but the modern buckle looks too large for me (even though Jay insists that large buckles are "feminine," I'm like, no that is LARGE, and my wrist is tiny!), and I like the idea of an infinitely adjustable band instead of the classic buckle, where the band can only be adjusted to where the holes are on the band.

You're sounding rather defensive. I have the right to express my opinion.

It's perfectly fine depending on your style. As if there was just one way for men to dress, lmao. Don't listen to the insecure masculine-crusaders around here.

GQ thinks you're perfectly fine to be a stylish man in a modern buckle band and so do I.

Hmmm. You may be pushing my "girls can do anything!" button, but sort of in the reverse, lol. It just feels a bit demeaning to have a special band just for women, especially when, as Pinksteady pointed out, there isn't a comparable special band just for men, seeing how the only argument that the leather loop is meant for men is that it is offered in the larger size only.

From that angle, the classic buckle would look exactly the same too. However, you're right about style. I can totally see flamboyant guys rocking the modern buckle. Most guys won't wear decidedly feminine straps though.

I wouldn't view it that way because women can pull off pretty much any accessories but men can't always do the same. Even a woman can pull off a 42mm in alligator strap.

But that's just a culturally conditioned perception. Like, in modern Western culture, men don't wear skirts, but if you look at other cultures and other ages, you see men wearing clothes that look skirt-like. So, you know, if, for example, enough men did wear the modern buckle, that could become normal, and that shape would stop being considered feminine.

True. That hasn't happened and as it stands now, the modern buckle is too feminine for most men's taste.

That last part is making me want the Milanese loop. I like fine adjustments.

I'm getting the SS watch in a 42mm with the classic leather band for myself. For my fiancée (surprise wedding gift) I'm getting the 38mm SS watch with the black modern buckle. I decided that for her only because I think is its and classy looking and she'd like it.

I think it has to due with personal taste.
If you like it,then buy it. I think it's very classy and elegant. It just doesn't come in a 42mm for myself.

The modern buckle is not specifically geared towards women, but I do agree that the roundness/softness of the buckle looks feminine. It's a real shame because I love the functionality of having a leather strap that clicks into place.

I am still undecided about whether to buy the modern buckle strap. I may order one and just return it if it looks weird on my wrist.

Has anyone been to an Apple store to view these in the last few days? I'm wondering what people think after seeing them in person.

I'm pretty sure obsessing over a piece of jewelry on your wrist in many cultures would be considered feminine enough that it wouldn't matter that you personally got the "masculine" version of whatever piece of practical jewelry you decided to put on your wrists.

What I see in this thread is a bunch of men worried that other men will find them queer.

I tried them both on. I preferred the classic buckle however I wish I could get a tan or a brown color band. I think the band market needs to open up a bit. The leather bands are kind of limited as far as colors and different types of leather

Agreed. I'd love to get the 42mm classic buckle in brown or midnight blue for variety.

All of the bands are unisex. The color pink is also unisex. Gender roles are stupid.

I think the Modern Buckle is geared towards women (as it's only offered with 32mm models) just as how the Leather Loop (it's only offered with 42mm models) is geared towards men.

I do like the look of the modern buckle though, and the clasp functionality is pretty awesome. Unless you're a man, I say go for the Modern Buckle.

For me personally I think the modern buckle is definitely feminine and a reason that swayed me from the 38 to 42. The leather loop I love and the fact it doesn't come for the 38 convinced me that apple have in so few words marketed it so.

you're rationalizing your decision to pay more for the model with the leather band. That's it. That's perfectly fine to pick the leather band, but for gods sake have some self awareness.
