I agree, it appears to be heat expansion. With the 15 inch chassis, a slimmer form factor, the GPU causing fast changes in thermal output and the metal hinge, given Apples tight tolerances, these laptops may have to wear in. The touch bar also gets almost unbearably hot when running 2 monitors or executing processor intensive tasks.

So, I really like this laptop and I have no complaints about functionality, but after using it for the last few days, I think I may have a build quality issue:

When I use the laptop in my lap and the fan comes on, I notice occasionally "clicking" occurring on the right side, near the top of the speaker grill. It almost sounds like what you would hear when metal expands/contracts when heated (like an oven). I can't reproduce it on demand, but if I just sit here and work with the laptop on my legs it will start doing it randomly. It is loud enough to be annoying.

Anyone else have this issue?

I also noticed (while trying to determine the source of the noise) that if I gently shake the laptop horizontal (with the lid closed) I can hear/feel something moving inside the body. I'm wondering if this is related to the clicking issue.

I am quite happy with the machine overall. I'm just trying to determine if I should return this laptop for another one while in my 14 day window.

I've noticed the same problems. Firstly when I open the lid there is a strange clicking noise (I thought the magnet holds too strongly the cover and the machine), but after when I close and open again, there is no noise.
Also during using the laptop sometimes I hear the same click noise.
I tried to gently shake the horizontal and I heard/felt the same moving part inside. Did anybody find out what can be the problem?

Exactly the same for me : click when opening, near the south west side of the trackpad, and then light click noise when heating up and cooling down.
I am waiting for testimonies about how the customer service deals with this

Otherwise, my macbook 2016/1TB/2.6/460 works like a charm.

I have the same issues, first I had the popping sound, so I thought i'd return and get a new one. Second machine I had an issue with the shaking part inside and I thought something was loose, so I returned for a new one. Third one I had a clicking noise every time I move the display and also when I opened the lid, return for new one. And this current one I have has a clicking noise when I open the lid on the right side on the hinge.

Had four MacBooks now since the start of January, and they all have the same problems, Apple need to sort out the quality of their devices. I have clicking noise with my iPhone 7 Plus too, really annoying that you pay so much money for this...

I am having the same issues. It's kinda disconcerting. I'm hopeful it's within the tolerances. Never had it before, and it does seem to be related to heating up.

I was having this problem too. Late 2016 MBP with annoying popping sound that seemed to come from the hinge. It happened frequently when opening the laptop, and then later while using it rather randomly, but seemed like it might have been related to warming up from use.

Then the "M" key on the keyboard got stuck and would not travel. I took it in for a Genius appointment. As annoying as the popping was, I am not sure I would have gone to the trouble to bring it in for that. They took the laptop for the better part of the week and replaced the whole top of the computer as well as the screen for "cosmetic defects". So basically about 2/3s of the whole machine. The top includes the keyboard top metal part of the frame and the battery, I gather.

The keys are working again (for now) and thankfully, the popping seems to have stopped completely.

Im currently fighting this solution, i refuese to teardown my 1 month old device to change the lcd part. I want new replacement

I have this too, although I am not very disturbed by it.

I believe it is the hinges and a "stick-slip" phenomena. Some tensions is built up in the hinge between the pin and knuckles. When the tension is released we get the pop/crackle sound.

I have been able to reproduce it by pressing lightly on the top of the screen. Screen starts to bend a bit and then you get the popping sound and the screen starts to move.

For me it is a very infrequent phenomena, maybe once a day, and as it is essentially mechanical I assume it will go away over time. I doubt there would be any large variance in production of the hinges, so probably all machines have this to some extent, it is maybe more a question of how it affects us as user.

They don't need to tear down your mbp just open the bottom case and then loosen the screws to the hang a little.
No hussle, just visit Apple Store and they can fix it in 30min.

My new machine don't have it.

Interesting, how long have you had the machine? For me it took a week or two to notice the problem.

Thanks for tip. Have you done this personally?

As you say it seem the hinges are slightly too tight. You can see how you have to build up a bit of tension in the screen before the hinges actually start to move. But I thought the hinges on this model were injection molded as one single part, hence no way to adjust?

Also greetings to a fellow Swede. I am located in Gothenburg, so no Apple Store but "MacForum" are good people so I may swing by next week and get their feedback.

The new machine feels more "light" but also more solid in the Display. And I'm surten that I don't have it.

You can simply try it your self, make your CPU go on 100% (don't remember the command in terminal but you can google it) for like 10min so the mbp gets hot.
Then touch the screen a little just a little so it wiggle and it I'll make a sound.

Well, the gays in the repair macforum or Lop can help you I personally can recommend Lop they are really good!
And goes the extra mile for the customer.

I understand exactly how you feel. I had the same thought. I just got a lemon, and for what it costs, I would rather just have a new one. I wish I had brought it back within the first month and got my money back and just waited for the next model. But so far I am happy with the repair.

I have EXACT this issue aswell, so to resolve the creaking noise one must losen some screws for the hinges? This creaking is making me mad!

Get 2 or 3 videos of the crack and go to the service center or genius bar, they will easily suggest to replace the entire lcd part. With more argument and depending on the age of your mac, they might give new replacement macbook.

I occasionally hear the "popping" sound as well. I think it might be electrical related within the build itself.

just received my device from Apple with new replacement display, adjusting the display, POP !. Unbelievable.

My 15" MBP with touch bar is currently at the Apple store being looked at by the Genius Bar. Here's what I know so far:
  • They've been able to witness the popping noise
  • They believe it's coming from the trackpad
  • They "need more time to run tests"
  • They're probably going to speak with the "Engineering team" about the problem.
It has been at the store now for 48+ hours. They've asked for another 24 hours to continue their investigation.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Sorry it took me so long to reply.

The Apple technicians admitted that they heard the popping noise themselves - they thought it was coming from the trackpad. They believed that they solved the problem by calibrating the trackpad - only because they hadn't heard the pop (for some unknown duration) after calibration.

The problem was that they had no steps to reproduce the popping noise in the first place. So I wasn't convinced it was fixed but I didn't bother arguing my point with them for too long. (Of course I couldn't reproduce it myself while in the Apple store.)

Here we are 2 weeks later - still popping. I don't really know if it's worth making another reservation, but this defect is really irritating me considering the price I paid for a top-of-the-line machine.

Mine is popping aswell, this is my first Apple product and I'm not impressed. It is not related to software, tried windows with bootcamp then reformatted. It even pops while installing macos. I have no idea where it comes from and it happens randomly.

Does Apple send you back refurbished replacements, new or repairs yours?

So I just came back from Apple. I gave them to investigate what is the problem. After 10 days I get it back and they did nothing at all. They couldn't reproduce the problem, so they did nothing. Of course I couldn't show them in the shop where is 100 people and I can't hear my own voice, so I went home and the the heard clicking noise again. I'm really upset. I don't know what to do anymore. I try to ignore it, but it's really hard.

Read my post in the thread linked below. See if you can reproduce it that way.
