Funny how that works. This has been an issue since the MBP came out, but now it's suddenly news. Soon it will be a crisis.
At least the fact that every outlet with a story on it has "reached out" to Apple for comment means we can be pretty sure that the upper echelons of Apple are aware.

So I came here because lo and behold, my new MBP late 2016 that I bought in December is exhibiting this same problem now! Interesting that news sites have picked up on this. Must be a problem that took a few months to develop.

****ing Apple. I swear, I tell myself never to buy a first generation of their products every single time, and without fail I get burned. Sick of their now ****** Q/A testing, sacrificed all in the name of thinness.
[doublepost=1492265967][/doublepost]Well after the latest popping noise this morning, I notice my left speaker is dead. Collateral damage.

For you, apparently, but this thread was started in November.

It's important to blame everything on thinness. (And Tim Cook, who is trying to kill Apple, according to complaints here.) I can see how making something thinner makes it harder to test. It makes it harder to see if you hold it edgewise.

So the only fix requires Apple to keep the laptop for a couple days?

I'm not holding the damn laptop wrong, if that's what you're trying to say.

Amazed that no repair has involved slackening the resistance in the hinges and/or ensuring both hinges have the exact same resistance.

Apple does fewer and fewer repairs that involve adjusting or fixing parts. Their idea seems to be that it's cheaper to pay for more parts than to pay for expertise and labor.

Makes it hard when you actually have to use your computer. Can they order the parts and bring the laptop back? I'll probably just wait it out a while longer until the Genius Bar folks catch up.

This is probably not much help, but I've noticed my MPB makes the pop noise much more often when sitting on a TwelveSouth dock.

Good point - but surely a top case replacement includes as part of the process a hinge resistance calibration? Or maybe that's wishful thinking... (it really should though).

The genius that took my macbook never heard about the popping noise issue either. Too bad, the MacBook decided to act all nice at the bar and decided not make any popping noises. They took it in for further testing after showing them the videos of the sound as it happens.

This has been a stressful experience with my first Apple product. Hopefully Apple won't screw up and fix pop sound, fix keyboard keys that get stuck and put the correct logic board with the 460 in case they replaced it (Notified them by phone).

Anyways, can't wait to get it back.

On my rMBP 2015 13", after being used on my lap for about 5 min, my machine will make a sound reminiscent of putting your finger on a key without pressing it. This happens on the right side when i pick up the machine. Anyone else experiencing this?

same thing happened with mine I can even re create it pushing screen from bottom and back the hinge is to blame and my mates one doesn't make any pop when pushing screen so much be some are damaged and some are not, can't believe a £3000 machine has this problem, apple are changing the screen which includes the hinge so hopefully ill get it back in few days and won't happen again

I heard the pop 2-3 times since November but I was always aware that it's just heat expansion. In each case my laptop was on the bed or couch and those surfaces tend to trap heat and cause laptops to warm up.

On my desk or on my Arcbook stand the machine never makes any sound even under load.

So today my right speaker suddenly blew. I just opened the lid from it being asleep for over and hour, began using the laptop normally, heard a pop/crinkle from the right side of the laptop, all while never playing anything. I barely use the speakers as it is, normally I'm on headphones. But now the right speaker is just as blown as the left. The left one works intermittently, but still sounds blown when it does.

Also, when I pick up the closed laptop on the hinge side, I always hear a pop after it's been sitting for a while. This is ********.

I see a trip to the Apple Store in your future.

Macbook Pro 2016 13" TB

So today I was able to reproduce the popping sound: after running Handbrake for an hour, I turned off the Macbook, unscrewed the bottom lid and touched the battery - it produced the exact popping sound. As far as I understood not the battery itself, but the adhesive between the battery and the upper case. I left the macbook to lay at the table and let it to cool down. After half an hour a push the battery and no sound at all. So this popping sound might be a result of the adhesive increasing and decreasing during the laptop temperature rises.

Just a few days ago I started noticing this similar sound happening when I was waking my macbook pro from sleep. I thought I was going crazy until I googled this and would you look at that.... it's not just me. :/

For the record, my macbook is a 2.9/16/2tb/radeon 460.

I left the machine alone in sleep for ~2 hours before I opened it up to see if the sound would happen again. I caught it on video about 4 mins after I opened the lid, turns out I should have let the video keep going because there were 1-2 little "pops" after the one I recorded.

I've been using the computer for about 30 mins after to put together this video, no popping sounds after the initial ones...

The noise on my computer was not produced as a result of attempting to move the screen. In fact, mine never makes a noise no matter if it's been sitting 30 mins or a full day.

Anyway, here's the video:

Note: The whisping noise before the actual pop is me rubbing my nose or something.

In addition to the issues I've mentioned with my MBP elsewhere in this thread, my MBP's right speaker (which barely works as it is now), exhibited this behavior and noise:

This occurred just by picking up the laptop, which had been in use for about 30 minutes, and moving it to my lap. There was an initial POP from the speaker, then I got out my iPhone to record this noise. It stopped about a minute after I stopped recording.

What did you end up doing? I hear and feel that same noise on startup and never afterwards until I shut down and power back on the computer. I managed to record a video of the sound fortunately I will be taking my laptop to an Apple Store just in case it is something broken.
[doublepost=1494993124][/doublepost]A 3K laptop should not be making these sounds. It is something Apple will eventually address like most other issues.

Mine has this problem as well. Is Apple still playing deaf, dumb, and blind on this? The nearest Apple Store to me is 180 miles one way.

For those experiencing popping noises:
Try pressing down firmly on the display bezel, especially left and right from the "MacBook Pro" logo. I purchased 2 refurbs and both had a "unglued" or "loose" spot around the logo that made a crackling noise when pressed, in addition to the high pitched keyboard issue. One of them also rattled when being shaken. Returned both after experiencing this.

Man oh man - Those couple videos do not make me excited or happy..

What a total drag.

Whatever they do with this rumored spec bump/update, I really hope they are ironing out these QC issues with various key components on the new machines.

My REPLACEMENT macbook did that once, it had been asleep for the night, and I just opened it when I got to my office to hear that happening from the right side, also for about a minute. From the shock I wasn't able to get to my phone in time to record it, but it seemed to stop around a minute or so, then I havent heard much from it since... Hoping this isnt an issue....

I contacted Apple Support, and after about 5 Senior Advisors, a visit to a physical store to make sure it was indeed a hardware issue, and then another week of processing later, Apple sent me a replacement laptop, saying their Engineering Group wanted to capture mine for analysis. I suppose it was the best outcome I could hope for, though shortly after I got it, it made the same sound as the video in post #95 of this thread. Just once though, and luckily it doesnt sound like any issues with the speaker persisting after that....
