Are you sure you are not working for Apple? You sound like the people from the customer care I spoke... but if you want to wait all the time and not have a solution, you can come and buy my MacBook for the retail price. I will move on then. :)

You can also have my incident number and try your luck.
Surely, I'm not working for Apple. Just an ordinary user just as you. Why would people who don't share the exact same mind as you be employees of Apple? Nor am I trolling. Stop claiming that. Stop behaving so offensive, even to people who not agree with you on all points. If I'd be trolling, I wouldn't make effort to seriously reply to you.

I see many models that do not have this problem. So, how normal is this? The more people complain, the more Apple employees are joining the forum to talk their mistakes straight.
I am not trying to talk mistakes straight. As I said in my previous comment, I completely understand your feelings and yes, of course I stand side-by-side with you that your MacBook Pro should be fixed. I just tried to give you some advise from my own experiences (with AppleCare/Aftersales etc). I only think that you should give them some time and opportunity to investigate and fix the issue.

Either those who write these messages are not having this problem on their own. That’s also an option. In that case, you have no reason to be in this thread anyway.
They do have the right to be in this thread, everybody has. This is a forum, meant for discussions where everybody may take part.

So, we have someone calling people paranoid and obsessed, while he doesn't own the damn MacBook. I'm sorry mate, but you have no idea what you're talking about.
He does, although not specifically with the 2016 MacBook Pro, as he stated "I've had thermal expansion make pops in many devices. Games consoles, computer monitors, TVs, home theater audio amplifier and so on."

You got it exchanged?! Apple is refusing to exchange..
Don't focus to much on getting it exchanged. Watch your attitude towards them, stay polite and cooperating, give them time and the opportunity to investigate. Bring in your MacBook Pro for investigation and repair. They will deal with it. If not possible to fix it in reasonable time, they will surely replace your MacBook Pro to keep you happy and to keep up their imago/status.

Here is what you are misunderstanding: I have been very polite and cooperating. Unfortunately, they are just NOT willing to help you. You have to wait "several months or years" (as Apple said theirselves). I have brought in my MacBook for repair or investigation. They just didn't want to take it in, as "we are still investigating this issue. All you have to do is wait for an unknown amount of time." So basically, they are NOT dealing with it.

They will NOT replace my MacBook. They are not doing anything to keep up their image. The only thing they do, is staying rude, not understanding and arrogant. I know I have to give them time. But I am not willing to wait for many months or even years. If I wanted a bad quality laptop, I would have bought a Packard Bell.

I understand you better now. I think I got you a bit wrong, as I thought you didn't want to leave your MacBook Pro in the Apple Store to investigate. Sorry for that.

In that case, please contact Apple Aftersales again, yourself! I have experienced them as more cooperating than AppleCare/Genius Bar. Be polite and cooperative, but clearly show that you want it to be solved. If the one you're talking with can't do anything, ask for their Supervisor.

If that doesn't work send an email to tcook@apple.com, one of his team members of Executive Relations will contact you in a few days to 1.5 weeks. Politely extensively explain all that has happened, your experiences and your disappointment. Make sure that your phone number is in the email. This is about the highest level of Customer Relations that you can contact.

Good luck.

I took my 2016 MBP sans touchbar in for the same issue. The person insisted it was an issue with the fans being dirty (I've had this machine for 6 months, and it's been clicking since day one). They plan to clean the fans, and check to see if issue persists. If it does they'll replace them and recheck. I insisted they run full diagnostics and make sure it's not a battery expansion issue. I'll update you guys once I get it back.

My hinge makes a loud cracking sound whenever I open it after it being closed for a while. Its a bit annoying, not sure if I want to take it in or not.

I don't see any point replacing your Macbook pro. Such a replacement will have the same problem unless you get 2017 Macbook pro or 2104 or 2015 Macbook pro.

Also how long have Apple been investigating your Macbook pro you took in days, weeks, month or months?

I just got my MacBook Pro back from repair at the Apple Store. They replaced the top case, which comprises of the keyboard, palmrest area, and battery. Unfortunately, the popping issue still remains.

So, how do we know for sure the Kabey Lake-2017-versions of the MBP do not have this issue? I want to buy one, but with all this news, I dunno what to do.

I was able to get a refund for my past 2016 model and buy the new 2017 model. I have yet to experience any issues.

When people start posting and complaining they are having the same problem.

I have yet to see threads on the internet complaining about the Macbook pro making this noise.

My 2017 13" Makes the pinging noise about 5 minutes after being awake.

So far only two people in this thread are reporting a problem with the new MacBook Pro 2017.

At apple forum I see no thread there people complaining of the new MacBook Pro 2017.

To more people buy it well it is hard to say at this point.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. I have had 2x2016's and both have had issues with the keyboard. I have had 2x2017's and one had issues with the keyboard, and the popping/pinging noise from the front right side of the trackpad. My new 15" 2017 has a small popping noise from the hinge when moved after a bit.

I'm not saying the machines are garbage, and not to buy one. But anyone can read whatever they would like out of the posts on the forums.

To there are many threads of people complaining of Macbook pro 2017 I'm going to treat it as isolated incident.

I'm not worried about the Macbook pro 2017. A couple of posters are not a considered.

Well 7 pages on the Macbook pro 2016 and other threads here on the Macbook pro 2016 and other message boards talking about the same problem is concerned that this is design flaw. It also hit mainstream media and in the news. Yet Apple is covering it up and not talking about it.

Apple engineers have to know what the problem is by now they have had months and months of people returning Macbook pro 2016.

I can't speak for everyone who bought a 2017 model like I did but mine works perfectly as it should of worked when I bought the 2016 model.

Happy to see that you finally have a perfect MacBook Pro. Just curious, what did you do with your old MacBook Pro 2016? Did you buy the 2017 yourself, or Apple upgraded you?
Sell it to someone else, lost some money. At the end of the day it was a wise thing to do. I love my new MacBook!

Here's my update...

Last time I took my MBP into the Apple Store, they replaced some fans and thought they fixed the popping noise problem. Obviously that was not the case. This was months ago and I got fed up with them so I lived with the issue for a while.

Still annoyed by the popping, I came back to this thread to catch up. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar and went in to try to get a refund or credit. The funny thing is, the Genius that was helping me had the same MBP as us and admitted that he experiences the same problem and acknowledged that he thought it was an issue with the screen hinge, although he told me he couldn't be bothered to get it fixed. He looked at my repair case on his phone and told me the next step was going to be a software erase. We all (including the Genius) know that it would not have solved the problem. I left.

Then I followed some other advice found here in this thread and talked to Apple's Post-sale services about it. Eventually spoke with a Senior Advisor on the matter. Nice people, but they refused to do anything except for sending me a box to ship it to them for repairs/testing. It seems like they don't have the authority to do anything else. I tried to negotiate a different solution since I'm a developer and rely on this MBP to make a living (my partner with the same MBP also experiencing the same problem). Anyway, they explained that they must go through the warranty since I'm outside of the refund period, and that this was the procedure.

It's pretty clear, in my opinion, that it is a design flaw in the screen hinge. The tolerances are too tight and gets even worse after thermal expansion. None of my other MBPs have ever exhibited this issue.

My only hope is that it gets fixed (unlikely) or it gets repaired enough times AND they acknowledge that this is a real issue in which case they will possibly replace/upgrade. I figured I might as well send it in - let's see what they do. After all I still can't get over why my $3k machine makes loud, irritating noises every time I use it. I know this issue sounds petty, but I feel like it's analogous to buying a brand new BMW that makes rattling noises every time you go above 10 mph.

It's fairly simple to reproduce the problem.

Reproduction steps (without touching the machine):
  • When the machine is cold and begins warming up (around 35°C)
  • When the machine is very warm and is around the range of 50-60°C
Reproduction steps (includes touching the machine):
  • When the machine is cold and closed, it will most likely pop when you lift the screen to open it.
  • When the machine is warm and while it is open, gently press the back of the screen in the middle horizontally and bottom vertically (near the hinge).
  • I've also found that when the machine is warm, sometimes the pop will happen if the screen wiggles/moves caused by fast typing or moving the machine on your desk, for example.

I am experiencing the exact same problem and all the steps you describe apply for my tbMBP 2016 15".

My top case was replaced after I brought it in and I was told that the hinge was also adjusted, but the issue still persists.
The only thing that changed after the replacement is that the popping became less without touching and moving the machine (sitting on a table). Before the replacement had a fairly loud popping sound every 5-10 minutes when the machine was warm, now it pops every 30min-1h.

Interesting, --id--.

I thought this was likely to happen to me if I sent it in enough. Have you settled with the issue now? Or will you send it back since the problem persists?
